Wes looks like a geek because Alexis Denisof is an incredibly skilled actor, physically as well. Think how well he did all those times Wes was tripping over his feet, and back in Buffy looking awkward and dorky next to Giles. It's like traditional clowning. That stuff is really hard to do.
