For some reason, this sketch scared me when I was a little kid. The baker's getting root beer all over his clothes bothered me a lot. For a while, I was afraid to watch Sesame Street because I was afraid that this sketch would come on. Once, however, when it did, I ran into my room and came back out just at the end.
@Pocockable It's not hard to understand why you were scared. It looked like serious injuries when he spilled the root beer on himself. Just because it's a show for children doesn't mean that there aren't some things that will upset some children. Some people would probbaly get upset about the thought of so much food being wasted.
I remember the Bert and Ernie sketch that came before, with the cherries. It's similar to the pizza and grape juice sketch. Does anyone have the one with the cherries?
I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS LITTLE I WOULD LAFF MY ASS OFF WHEN DA BAKER WOULD FALL AT DA END ! I'M IN MY MID 30'S AND I'M STILL LAFFING MY ASS OFF AT HIM .
The baker at the end could never get it right. I'm not sure if he ever made it down the stairs without falling. LOL. I think he did make it one time... I THINK. LOL.
@eddiechinglives If you want to see some of those kids grown up, check out "20 years and still counting." There's Jon-jon who did some stuff with Grover, as well as Shala(?) who had some clips with Ernie and Bert. Actually, I'd like to talk to the girl that kept throwing "Cookie Monster" into the alphabet. I'll bet she's so embarassed about that!
I talked with hoopersghost on his clip for baker10 about "baker#0". Check on it, it's quite funny!... I liked the way the kids rose their voices a note when they counted 4 arms!
Of all the baker videos, this one sees him meet the messiest fate. I mean the poor man gets completely *drenched* in root beer floats. You can tell he's thinking, "there's GOT to be an easier way to break into show business".
poor baker couldn't even handle 1 giant wedding cake let alone 4 rootbeer floats. It's a wonder he wasnt fired, or hospitalized. whichever would came first. Also i noticed they did wind up toys for 4 and also for 10. why is this?
Well there are no videos of it yet, but I heard there is 1 bellybutton as one of the objects, and 1 wedding cake that the baker has to bring down the stairs.
After awhile the baker started to get on my nerves, I used to say to myself do you have to fall down all the time, try looking where you're going.....lol!
Thinking of the Baker films, I was sure that in the UK the baker had four coffee desserts, unless it was my imagination. The mere thought of the word beer on a kids programme would have gone down like a lead balloon.
Root beer is sold in the UK, but very hard to come by - I tried it but found it's a very acquired taste. I suppose we have our equivalent - dandelion and burdock.
Ever notice the numbers at the end of the segment? All except "6" and "10" were yellow. "6" was orange and "10" was red AND had the same design from the opening. If anyone did see a "Baker #1", is the 1 yellow or a different color, like blue?
LMAO! You guys freakin' crack me up!! There is NO WAY that when I saw these at 4-6 years old that I would have ever thought about the baker using an elevator. It is amazing that now as grown adults (well except for me anyway!) that we make comments about these skits that we never would have 25+ years ago. Keep'um coming!
I actually have this segment on a videotape my parents taped back in 1987 when I was 1 1/2, and I always loved watching this segment and the baker when I was little, still do in fact. Also, he ALMOST succeeded in not dropping his creations in the #2 segment, but unfortunately still had balance trouble. :)
I dont recall "one Bellybutton" but it remember the the guy that opens the door does not reveal an elephant but a cow. I wonder if any one has the Baker #1 footage. and I hope it shown soon
Never, ever, ever let that baker use dessert drinks again, because it would lead to broken glass and a messy baker. I'm glad he didn't do hot fudge sundaes! Then again, it would've been just as funny as this one!
I can tell you are a big S.S. muppet fan. Over 20 years ago, I only recorded early to mid 70's S.S. cartoons and short films. I regret now that I didn't collect many of the old muppet segments, especially Ernie and Bert. I should have at least got those then!
There WAS a #1. I only saw it once 33-34 years ago, but the one thing that I remember from it is a boy lifting up his shirt and saying, "one belly button."
You just rang a major bell in my head! I was four years old 34 years ago but I think you're right about the belly button! Do you remember a S.S. skit on in the early to mid 70's about a guy walking around with everything happening backwards around him? In one scene, he is walking through an open field and a plane flies backwards behind him. The plane was taking off and the guy was walking backwards and they reversed the film.
I didn't even know there was a #1 until I saw news about the films on Muppet Wikia, but I've seen that one now on "40 Years of Sunny Days", which I own. I remember seeing all the other Number Song series when I was three and four.

Spilling a whole group of desserts is not wanted when for real.
For spilling a whole group of desserts, as long as it's 100% fake, falling down the stairs is not wanted when in real life.
The best thing for America to do is to use drop zones plus "Family Feud" mushroom-style buzzers.
