The cop did the right thing. Civilians are taught to turn to the right so that they go back into their lane and possible can keep driving. The cop, however, notices that this guy will eventually cause a wreck to someone and avoids it happening to anyone but himself so he takes the hit on the passenger side and also avoids potentially having to chase this reckless driver down. the officer turned left off of instinct he has gone through training that tells him to pass cars on the left and not the right side. In a moment that is required a split second decision his mind went to what it knew not what it thought it regardless the car was in his lane and he did try to avoid it the other car had already proven it would have gone through the car infront of him so as far as the driver of the patrol car knew the car was going to proceed fowards.

@dashwood123 - Agreed. Ideally, as is required by all states currently, LE officer's driver training is supposed to kick in. However it doesn't always work out. It was a 50/50 chance the officer would make the right decision to begin with. Even less of a chance when you consider how little time they had to make such a decision. Easy to point out mistakes in a slowed down video...all too easy.

The LE started turning before the SUV, maybe he thought the SUV would continue straight. Regardless of what it was, no one else was injured and that is the most important thing, the SUV should of stayed on his/her side of the road. Its easy for people to keyboard back seat drive when not in that situation.
When you follow too closely behind another car, you can't see much in front of you, only the other car. No time to react. So about 20 years ago when a car was riding my lifted Toyota 4X4 truck's bumper on the freeway, and there was a pallet on the road, I cleared it, the other car hit it and rolled. That wasn't a good thing, it just could have been prevented by BACKING THE F- UP from the guy in front of you when driving, especially at FWY speeds.
Driving tip: A car impact on the passenger side is probably 5x less lethal than a head on or driver's door impact. How could the cop know the driver wasn't going to turn the other way? The other driver was obviously stupid enough to already be in the wrong lane.
I think he could've possible avoided it or greatly minimized impact if he had swerved hard to the right .. but you gotta be a badass with quick reflexes to pull that off

@SandMasta maybe thats why he swerves left. to protect others. LE swerves left, LE and suv only ones involved. LE swerves right hits car in lane next to him pushing that car into a parking lot and crashing into other people, plus SUV bounces off LE car and into parking lot on other side hitting people. At least this way if the SUV is out of control it is stopped and no one else is in danger.

@smithracer29 sandmasta said it, it’s natural to swerve to the right, another reason could be training. LE's are also trained to react and think faster then other people. The LE started turning before the SUV, maybe he thought the SUV would continue straight. Regardless of what it was, no one else was injured and that is the most important thing, the SUV should of stayed on his/her side of the road. Its easy for people to keyboard back seat drive when not in that situation.

When you follow too closely behind another car, you can't see much in front of you, only the other car. No time to react. So about 20 years ago when a car was riding my lifted Toyota 4X4 truck's bumper on the freeway, and there was a pallet on the road, I cleared it, the other car hit it and rolled. That wasn't a good thing, it just could have been prevented by BACKING THE F- UP from the guy in front of you when driving, especially at FWY speeds.
