He really starts of with 5 coins rather than one. He puts one on top first and moves his hand to the left side of the screen slightly turning the brass pieces so that the coin can get into his hand. And than he puts it under the brass pieces using his finger to hold up the coin. To add, one of the brass rings is narrower than the other. Pause it at 1:31 and you'll see.
