How to make a balloon arch

You'll only need a maximum of 50 of each colour..... if the arch is 16ft it will be more like 30 (x 4).

If you're building the arch with helium it's difficult to pre inflate and prepare all the clusters - because they will float away onto the ceiling (that's why I keep them between my legs on the video).

If the balloons were all prepped and air filled you could build the arch in 10 minutes (but it won't float if the balloons are air filled).

Hi Sally

It is possible to use air and helium balloons - but the arch will not be as bouyant.

Also - as the hours pass the helium balloons will reduce in size and the air balloons will stay the same size. This could possibly distort the shape of the arch.

One possible solution - air fill the balloons at either end of the arch (where the weights are) and slightly under inflate them. Helium fill the central area where the arch needs it's lift.

Depending on how large you inflate the balloons - between 110 to 130 balloons (for a 16ft arch).

If you want kids to hold the balloons outside and you don't have helium, cups & sticks are good.

Cups & Sticks are no use if you're making an arch.

You can air fill the balloons and hang the arch if it's inside - if it's outside in a park, don't bother.

It would be better to do small bunches of balloons or use cups & sticks.

These are 12" balloons so they'll float for about 20 - 24 hours.

You can make the arch float for longer by treating the balloons with Hi-Float.

The balloons are 11" Pearl Qualatex balloons - most good balloon companies sell them.

You can use most 50lb nylon line or strong fishing line.

It might float for a short while - it will probably start to change shape as the helium balloons begin to get smaller and the air filled balloons stay the same size.

If the arch is going indoors you might get away with it. An outdoor arch needs as much buoyancy as possible.

Try your local Plumbing Merchant!

If the columns are inside I just use a sand weight and top the column with a helium filled 3ft - this saves me going back to the venue to collect bases and poles.

Hey..... I did once float a man to 10,000ft. I used 500 x 3ft helium filled balloons.

He cut the balloons and parachuted back to Earth.

Yes the balloons are helium filled that's why the balloon arch appears so light and easy to move.

If the balloons were air filled the arch would need a frame.

To be honest for such a small area you'd be better building a single line arch.

Tie some line between 2 chairs and attach helium balloons so they just about touch the side of each other. Bring the chairs together and there's your arch (you may need to slide a few balloons along the line to make it look perfect).

You will only need 15 balloons and the arch will not take up too much space.

We make most of our arches about 24ft long (about 12ft x 12ft). Originally this was the distance from the back of our shop to the front. So when we made an arch before we delivered it - 24ft was the maximum we could do.

Over time we found that this distance worked for most things. If we needed the arch to be higher or bigger we simply left a couple of feet of string between the weight and the arch (at both ends) - especially if the arch was behind a top table as nobody can see the bottom of it.

I've just counted the clusters and there's 43, so 43 x 4 balloons = 172 balloons.

It took me 20 minutes to build - but of you are not used to working with balloons, allow at least an hour.

Chrissy - you can use air, but if you want to form an arch shape you will need to use a frame or hang the balloons.

One good thing about air - the balloons will last longer, they will only float 20 hours when filled with helium

In this video I used 11" Qualatex balloons, they are nice and strong around the neck area.

An alternative balloon is also made by Anagram.

Cheaper balloons will rip at the neck when you tie and twist them together and it will cost more in the long run (you will use more helium and more balloons).
