If you're building the arch with helium it's difficult to pre inflate and prepare all the clusters - because they will float away onto the ceiling (that's why I keep them between my legs on the video).
If the balloons were all prepped and air filled you could build the arch in 10 minutes (but it won't float if the balloons are air filled).
@DavidSaker hi im makeing a arch for my mums 50th could u tell me how meny balloons it would take to do a 16 ft arch to go over the food table we have 4 dif colors we have 100 ov each at the min do u think this would b plenty or would will i need more thanks mark liked and subd ur channel
It is possible to use air and helium balloons - but the arch will not be as bouyant.
Also - as the hours pass the helium balloons will reduce in size and the air balloons will stay the same size. This could possibly distort the shape of the arch.
One possible solution - air fill the balloons at either end of the arch (where the weights are) and slightly under inflate them. Helium fill the central area where the arch needs it's lift.
hi there, im going to try and make this for my sons first bday but can i air fill the balloons and use the string and still have the arch using the weights at the ends or do the balloons need to be helium? would i still get the arch? and its going to be at a park?
It might float for a short while - it will probably start to change shape as the helium balloons begin to get smaller and the air filled balloons stay the same size.
If the arch is going indoors you might get away with it. An outdoor arch needs as much buoyancy as possible.
If the columns are inside I just use a sand weight and top the column with a helium filled 3ft - this saves me going back to the venue to collect bases and poles.
just one question, I will be using air filled balloons and i have pvc pipe but i was wondering what would be the best way to attach the balloons to the string and pipe????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Hi Mr. David SAKER IM DOING A BABY SHOWER THIS SUNDAY AND I WONT TO DO ABOUT TO BALLOON ARCHS AND THE PLACE HOLDS ABOUT 75 PEOPLE I WONT TO KNOW HOW MANY BALLOONS CAN I USE THANKS MRS. CHATMAN I REALLY WANT IT TO LOOK IT REAL NICE
How much money, time and effort is truly involved in this "simple" looking project? Vs. paying for it? Also how much helium and how many balloons does this take?
To be honest for such a small area you'd be better building a single line arch.
Tie some line between 2 chairs and attach helium balloons so they just about touch the side of each other. Bring the chairs together and there's your arch (you may need to slide a few balloons along the line to make it look perfect).
You will only need 15 balloons and the arch will not take up too much space.
I want to make one for my daugther's 1st birthday, not too big ..to go behind the birthday cake table. Should I make one just like that one?? And with air? Obviously smaller.
We make most of our arches about 24ft long (about 12ft x 12ft). Originally this was the distance from the back of our shop to the front. So when we made an arch before we delivered it - 24ft was the maximum we could do.
Over time we found that this distance worked for most things. If we needed the arch to be higher or bigger we simply left a couple of feet of string between the weight and the arch (at both ends) - especially if the arch was behind a top table as nobody can see the bottom of it.
i have a questions when you make a balloon arch do you really have to use helium tank to air the balloons or can I use a regular pump I just want to make a small one?
In this video I used 11" Qualatex balloons, they are nice and strong around the neck area.
An alternative balloon is also made by Anagram.
Cheaper balloons will rip at the neck when you tie and twist them together and it will cost more in the long run (you will use more helium and more balloons).
Thanks so much for that great comment. I filmed this on my own. I balanced the camera on top of the cylinder, on a fire extinguisher and on the floor - surprisingly you can't really tell when you watch it.
Not sure if you got my reply but here it is again:

On this video I'm using a BOC 'T' Size cylinder. The balloons are 11" so I would expect to inflate about 230.

I wanted to know how many balloons you can inflate with the helium tank you used.

Hi Spider
You'll only need a maximum of 50 of each colour..... if the arch is 16ft it will be more like 30 (x 4).

sallysurah 3 weeks ago
Depending on how large you inflate the balloons - between 110 to 130 balloons (for a 16ft arch).
DavidSaker 3 weeks ago
hi how meny balloons would i need for a 16ft arch and cool vid it helpt alot

If you want kids to hold the balloons outside and you don't have helium, cups & sticks are good.
Cups & Sticks are no use if you're making an arch.
DavidSaker 1 month ago
You can air fill the balloons and hang the arch if it's inside - if it's outside in a park, don't bother.
It would be better to do small bunches of balloons or use cups & sticks.
DavidSaker 1 month ago
@DavidSaker thank you, but why the need for cups and sticks?

These are 12" balloons so they'll float for about 20 - 24 hours.
You can make the arch float for longer by treating the balloons with Hi-Float.

You'll need 160 balloons. If you're air filling you will need a frame - or you can try and hang it.

The balloons are 11" Pearl Qualatex balloons - most good balloon companies sell them.
You can use most 50lb nylon line or strong fishing line.

You can air fill the balloons but the arch wont float - it will need to go on a frame.

You can get the Dacron from most decent balloon wholesalers.
Pioneer Europe or Pioneer USA (Qualatex) will also sell it.

It took me 25 minutes to build this arch - so a novice should allow at least an hour.
DavidSaker 9 months ago
how long would it take for one person who knows somewhat how to do this arch?
hotz4purple 9 months ago
It will work fine as long as it's not too windy - but it will only float 20 hours.
For examples of our outdoor arches go to balloon.com or google and search 'outdoor balloon arches'

Would this work if i wanted to put the arch outdoors and wanted to make it about 20 feet wide?

You can either build the air filled arch on string and push the pvc pipe into the garland.
Or follow this method go to balloon.com and search "how to make a balloon column"

Yes the balloons are helium filled that's why the balloon arch appears so light and easy to move.
If the balloons were air filled the arch would need a frame.

I've just counted the clusters and there's 43, so 43 x 4 balloons = 172 balloons.
It took me 20 minutes to build - but of you are not used to working with balloons, allow at least an hour.
Thanks

Hi David AWESOME video! very straight forward thanks for the upload. approx how many balloons were used? and how long did it take you?

Chrissy - you can use air, but if you want to form an arch shape you will need to use a frame or hang the balloons.
One good thing about air - the balloons will last longer, they will only float 20 hours when filled with helium
