No Republican at that time could have been elected in 1964. That said, it would have been a great campaign between John F. Kennedy and Barry Goldwater. They were personal friends and they would have had a good, issues-oriented debate. LBJ threw every piece of shit he could at Goldwater and went negative on him.

"atomic bombs... they can make you die..." The way the narrator says that is SO funny... "make you die" like one would say "make you sick"... I can't stop laughing... If not for that line, it would be a really depressing (though no less creepy) political ad.

LBJ definitely took the gloves off when he campaigned against Barry Goldwater. He didn't need to because the election of 1964 was already his the day JFK was assassinated. No Republican at that time could have been elected in 1964. That said, it would have been a great campaign between John F. Kennedy and Barry Goldwater. They were personal friends and they would have had a good, issues-oriented debate. LBJ threw every piece of shit he could at Goldwater and went negative on him.

No its not so awesome. Goldwater wanted to stand up to our enemy, the Soviet Union. He would have beat them in the 60's or early 70's like Reagan did in the 80's.
Goldwater didn't want us to be in Vietnam, he wanted us out before we had 500 dead men over there. LBJ was a progressive and wanted to maintain perpetual war in order to advance the progressive agenda.
What killed more people: Nuclear testing or the war in Vietnam? Nukes kept us safe, Vietnam didn't.

And they got one of the worst us presidents in modern history. Goldwater was not perfect, far from that. But LBJ totally failed in his Vietnam policies. I happen to think that Goldwater would have solved the problem in Asia in a more effective way. Or you fight a war, and accept the consequences, or you do not fight it. B. Goldwater had ideas that can be compared by the ideas of Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Reagan was a fine president, compared to the weak honest J.E. Carter whom I considder the worst US president of the 20th century.

@AndreasAntoniusMaria : Johnson did much for our nation, like finally outlawing racism, and creating excellent social programs, that helped many Americans out of poverty. (Until they were gutted by Nixon.) I think everyone, including LBJ himself, agreed that Vietnam was his downfall. But recall, Nixon prolonged that war, escalated (surged) it, in fact, for four long years.
Nixon's "playing the China card", was brilliant, however.
And wouldn't we be better off now, if we listened to Carter, then?

I think a little less Oliver Stone, and bit more checking of facts, might do you a world of good. Particularly a review of the legislation that Johnson enacted, from 1964-68.

Johnson won with a record-breaking 61% of the vote. After his loss, Goldwater whined that the Johnson won mainly because the nation was still in mourning of President Kennedy's death. The death took place a year before the election and Johnson had already had a accomplished a lot.

Did you also know that Goldwater's philosophy would have died if the 1973 oil crisis had not occured? This crisis, alone. ended the need for Keynesian economics.

@whoo689 LBJ lied about the Maddox being sunk by the Vietcong to get support for his absurd Tonkin Gulf Resolution. Some claim it was just an error, and they got it wrong. However, if they weren't CERTAIN that the Maddox was sunk, why the HELL would they use it to promote a war resolution?? That's fucking despicable. Not to mention, as far as I'm concerned, Congress should have the balls to DECLARE war, not let the president guide us into no-win wars with stupid resolutions.

@whoo689 South Vietnam had corrupt governments and many the Vietnamese, since the colonial days of French Indochina, had a dislike of foreign influence in their country; even the North Vietnamese government had a disdain for the Chinese government, because they feared China would colonize them. The Vietcong were ruthless, but they had a good strategy because of this hatred of foreigners. Not to promote Communism in anyway, BUT IT WAS A NO-WIN WAR.

The Vietnam War would have continued in a greater fashion if he had been elected President as well; he openly promoted "peace through strength." DO RESEARCH AND ACCEPT REALITY

@jhwink Goldwater made himself a sitting duck, however, because he said his nuclear ambitions to the press. I think Johnson's smear tactics were bad, in a matter, but not nearly as bad as the personal, backround-digging attacks which Lee Atwater founded.
