I owned a 2003 Hyundai Elantra and I just got a blue Veloster and I love the new car. Yes when i had my Elantra back in the day I knew this brand will some day be great and here we are today saying Hyundai is great.
What the hell?? Veloster competing with the 500 and FIesta? What kind of a twisted loic is that? In person, the Veloster is about as bi as a Focus, maybe a bit smaller. Defo not Fiesta sized. And speaking of the 500, it is actually smaller than the FIesta (a Grande Punto would compare to it), let alone a Veloster. The correct Ford to compare it to the 500 is the Ka, with which it shares it's platform.
On Fiat's side? The Bravo. So the Veloster, Focus and Bravo are in the same class.
Honda ruined the CR-Z by making it a hybrid electric, Scion tC is still too bland looking, I hate the idea of an asymmetrical vehicle design such as the veloster. That just leaves the Ford Fiesta and the Mini Cooper S but for the price of the mini cooper S in my country, you could get a Fiesta and a few extra fun optional extras not included in the Cooper S for the same price. I still would prefer a CR-Z with an all petrol engine, though. :(
i'm glad you guys discussed this car. i feel like it's gone under the radar and you guys brought attention to how it is a great addition to the market standard.

Great discussion. These episodes come out so much better when Alex acts more down to earth -- we all know how you can get sometimes, Alex!
I've been a huge fan of Hyundai since they've started making great vehicles lately. I'm still considering buying a Genesis Coupe, but waiting and HOPING they make a
I agree with alex about the center stack in the Hyundai... not a fan of the look of the interior, although it probably has great fit and finish/quality of materials.. cool car nonetheless...
Saw a Veloster driving in Stanley Park in Vancouver, BC a couple weeks ago. I was in a taxi and kinda looked over at it funny -- I didn't realize they were on the street yet. The driver looked over and grinned like "yeaaahh baby".
The name, however, is terrible. Does not roll off the tongue without pausing. Needs a 4th syllable. Veloster is interesting, but too awkward in some design aspects. A lot of people will not like it due to extreme looks...like people who don't understand modern architecture. I actually like it, but would change the front to look more distinguished and not too busy. Love the 3rd door concept. Needs push start, bluetooth, voice command and solid shifter. Loose the transformer interior!
After 'I like Fiesta more that the Focus' I really thought of unsubscribing... Especially your US Fiesta sedan. And those cars you mentioned that compete with the Veloster... are you for real? Just lol!
Sorry... misspeak. How many drunk friends do I have that will not be over 6 feet... few of them. I think there are generally more people in the 5'10 to 6'4 range than you'd like to believe. Not all guys are Alex Roy's height.
How many drunk friends do I have that will not be over 6 feet... most of them. The third door looks horrendous.
Pointblank, I'm not sold on Hyundai or Kia yet. It seems like they are throwing a bunch of technology in their cars to deter you from the fact that you're still driving a turd car that won't last in both terms of reliability and resell value.
I'll keep my Toyota X-Runner. If I were going to spend this kind of cash, I'd opt for Scion, Mazda, or older MINI... hands down.

JF you need to calm down dude!! I understand you are a perfectionist when it comes to specs and what not but this should be more of a "loose" conversation about what ever the topic is. That, or you need to give what ever the hell you're having :D hahhaha no but seriously i am excited about Hyundai as much as you are :)
Hyundai are moving up for sure but this car is being over estimated by you guys. I was looking at the latest Hyundai's today and I came away thinking... Too much about styling (which is looking like it's trying too hard) and not enough substance. That said they have improved out of site.
More tracking systems that you cant opt out of. I feel safer already. You guys should do an episode on vehicle tracking systems and alert the public on what to expect once all road vehicles have tracking systems. Not being paranoid but I feel that not enough people know that their cell phones can be tracked and cars are moving swiftly in that direction. And we all know what happens when there is more information available the more it will likely it will be abused (FB) How do we protect ourselves
RCA...Should've been and hdmi port, although I think its more of a Focus competitor than a Fiesta competitor. Still I think people who are looking to buy small cars tend to look at both the Focus and Fiesta.
Test drove one today, loved it buttttt it is really under powered! Even with just another 15 hp it would make it amazing, but I guess you would lose that 40 mpg. But what Ive seen lately is that MPG is the new HP of a couple of years ago at one point its too much and ruins the car.
The best thing about that extra door is that Hyundai have said it's be on the laft hand side in RHD markets, unlike the last car with an extra door, the Mini Clubman, that didn't bother making a different shell for RHD. Built in Oxford, but kids have to get out into the road in it's home market.
Best road testament of the past ten episodes. Very calm and collected speech and discussion, but to be honest , i think Hyundai lacked with its most important car (to me) the genesis. i'm a avid reader of DSPORT mag and i pretty much agree with what they have to say about, wrong pricing, wrong advertising, and slightly wrong performance range coming from the genesis.

and the 3 door thing is cool, but i think its only cool once cuz at one point u'd really want that 4 door, but i guess its cheaper to make a car with 3 doors than 4, less parts.
Look up the ML+ by vaistech I have it on my lex. it works on all lex/toyota headunits & gives you all the ipod/iphone/video connectivity better than toyota does
One more thing, Alex says look what you can get for the money....$23,000 could get you a second hand GTI, which everyone knows is light years better than the Veloster
The Veloster is a lumpy wad compared to other cars in the segment. The feature set is really quite good but the car is itself a crappy looking little thing. That's not saying much about the segment as they all look crappy trying too hard to appeal to "youth buyers".
Hyundai does not have the most fuel efficient line up since you can't count even BoF trucks into that equation. If you dropped BoF trucks and SUVs from FORD or GM, they'd be more fuel efficient than Hyundai.
Entire episode because of the Hyundai veloster????? are you joking??? Why didn't you dedicate 13 min. on a Kia ceed, or the new Opel/Vauxhall astra. And I hate it's 3-door design, it's a terrible, quasi innovative idea.
Geo fence? really? If feel the need for that maybe you should have raised you kids better. Honestly with all this crap to keep up with your kids I am surprised I survived to adulthood without it.

Guys did you watch the VW CEO freaking out over the interior quality of that Hyundai i30? What's not to say that quality is in the Veloster too? VW jealous of Hyundai? Good for Hyundai. :P
Hyundai market their cars to America because Americans are stupid and know nothing about cars which is why idiots like him say ohh this car is superr GREAT ! LOL hyundai will never make it Europe, because we have high standards :)

I really like Hyundai's, even the old & cheaply built ones are pretty fun to drive (minimal weight and rev-happy engines) The Veloster is right up my alley. I hope they put the 2.0T from the Genesis Coupe in one. Sign me up.
Hey Alex and JF, I watched this several times because you've sparked my interest in this car. I've seen the concepts and what not and liked the styling of it.
I have a few questions, the DCT, is that automatic? Or is it only a manual tranny? I'm a little confused
secondly, you said the interior was wonderful, but I dont recall you mentioning anything about storage capacity in the trunk. Can you haul a decent amount? or does the hatch cut down on room and turn into a mini type storage?
@JaySee5 Thanks for clarifying that. I'm unable to operate a clutch due to lack of leg functions :P But it's good to know there's some sort of automatic feature. And yeah, i didnt think about folding seats at all. I'm assuming if they added all the techno bells and whistles I would hope they would of thought about the rest of day to day functionality. I should swing by a hyundai dealership just to check it out for myself.

Ridiculous car... the looks it's ridiculous, the power it's ridiculous, the idea it's ridiculous. I mean, it's a Hyundai...all makes sense. Cars for people who don't like cars, just the status, that's the point !
Sorry, but the styling just doesn't do it for me. That front end looks terrible. I have to say though, 2600lb is quite impressive. Heck, that's less than most 944s.
JF! I like the Focus... It feels slightly underpowered, but overall I like the styling and feel of the car. You guys should do a Road Testament on Ford since it's revamp in '02 when it had to sell off its sister brands and make cars better. The crappy jelly bean Taurus is now an amazing car - especially the SHO model. The new safety airbag tech in the Explorer; Curtain airbags and rear seat seat-belt airbags seem extremely promising; and not to mention the appealing styling like in the new EDGE
Jokes that worked, structure and flow of information, and clearly you've done some research this time around. Good, 'cause I was thinking about giving up on Road Testament and now I'll be able to keep watching :)
you forgot the driving feel. i really like the veloster, but i doubt it drives anywhere near as well as the mini. i'll be better made though. for sure.
Did i hear you guys correctly- the turbo version will be TUNABLE??? (that means you can tune your own engine?)
The gadgetry in this car is just what a youngster needs, and i'd love to have it in my car, but i just don't fancy the styling...
Plus- i know that 40MPG sound amazing (specially for a N/A engine), but my Peugeot 206 2.0HDI could do that in 1999. That shows how car manufacturers didn't see the need for economical cars for the US market up till very recently. Just saying.
@FastLaneDaily I want to like this car but i have a hard time... but there are things i dont like about it , it looks cool but it also dosent at the same time, it still is FWD but even so i think i would spend more money on the cooper (or even a fiesta) and i think i would like it better. I dont know why i dont like it but I just dont

If you dropped BoF trucks and SUVs from FORD or GM, they'd be more fuel efficient than Hyundai.

veloster has a f-ing dual clutch? not bad
moochabod 4 months ago
Entire episode because of the Hyundai veloster????? are you joking??? Why didn't you dedicate 13 min. on a Kia ceed, or the new Opel/Vauxhall astra. And I hate it's 3-door design, it's a terrible, quasi innovative idea.

Guys did you watch the VW CEO freaking out over the interior quality of that Hyundai i30? What's not to say that quality is in the Veloster too? VW jealous of Hyundai? Good for Hyundai. :P

ImmaHanditard 4 months ago
@ImmaHanditard Dual-Clutch Manuals have an automatic function.
They also didn't say if the rear seats fold flat if at all and if they do if they fold 60/40 or 50/50.

AguriBR 4 months ago

WiZdOm17 4 months ago
Jokes that worked, structure and flow of information, and clearly you've done some research this time around. Good, 'cause I was thinking about giving up on Road Testament and now I'll be able to keep watching :)

you forgot the driving feel. i really like the veloster, but i doubt it drives anywhere near as well as the mini. i'll be better made though. for sure.
drea177cha5er 4 months ago
