i'm brand new to minecraft but i don't know what your doing.. just dig into the wall where the infinate water was so that it pushes you to towards the lava and stop at the wall rather than dig towards the lava

@TheTarionBesbald for your collection spot instead of digging 8 away from it, you should have started the water flow from the opposite side so you could stand closer to the spawner, because i believe (this is my theory) that they will spawn faster if you are a little closer to them, and then you can also watch them drown if you want :) The way I made by zombie spawner trap was with the nether rock and they burn when they hit it. You should try it out
