  • The only time one artist [Tony Burrows] has appeared 3 times in 3 different groups on the same episode on Top of the pops. Brotherhood of Man, Whiteplains and Edison Lighthouse [and he didnt even change costumes] WOW!

  • First 45 I ever bought!! Never knew they were Brits - HA! Still sounds great to these 52 yr old ears...

  • @willbuckley54 Totally wrong Tosspot!!!

  • four hit wonder boy, even elvis can't beat that

  • Just nuts about Tony B. xx

  • @michellesvideosuk And why not? Mr Blackburn is still a great broadcaster, and his splendid voice - which is perfect (or something very close to it) for a radio presenter/'DJ' - has hardly changed at all since the early 1970's!

Mind you, Tony (God luv him) no longer has the classic 'pretty boy' looks that he had, 40 years ago. Time waits for no man (or woman, for that matter). The prime of life - indeed life itself - is very ephemeral (tragically).

  • Here's a link to more music that needs to come back youtube.com/watch?v=NlZM_mwIEX4&feature=share The Fortunes Storm In A Teacup

  • dear ectomorph it seems i must have put a comment about this some where just found it 1 year ago. no i dont like this at all. feel free to slag off what ever you want its just a view hurting no one. all the best to you from me

  • @runtburger2 Thank you, sir; I appreciate your comments.

It would appear that your taste in music is very different from mine - which is perfectly fair enough. One man's 'meat' is another man's poison, and all that.

On the whole, I was not (and am not) a fan of 'punk' rock music. Having said that, I must admit that SOME punk music is not without merit.

  • I saw this then got my mother to get it - my first ever record.

  • Ok they are singing about me I heard lol!!!!!!

  • @rosemarydragon

You should be so lucky! You probably weren't even born in January 1970, when Edison Lighthouse were at number 1 in the charts with "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" - it was a long, long time ago, so it was.

  • @TheEctomorph I was born then I am really really old lol. I was quite young but born and i didn't really like this then but with my name being rosemary on here I love it now!

  • @rosemarydragon Very glad to hear it, Rosemary. "Love Grows" (Where My Rosemary Goes)" is a great song; one of the classic 'MOR' number one hits of the 1970's - indeed it is surely one of the ALL-TIME classic 'MOR' pop singles.

Oh, and just because you were born before 1970, doesn't mean that you are an old-timer! I was born in 1965, and i would admit to being well into middle-age - but there is no way that I would accept the label "old-timer"!

  • This must be a copy of the show. TOTP was in color by January 1970.

  • Which year was this? I remember that it was the first 45 that i ever bought.

  • @nickelback1955 Beginning of 1970

  • Is that the original lead vocalist who is on the record?

  • @roselandalvin Yes, this is the original singer, Tony Burrows. The guy in the colour clip is just miming to Tony Burrows vocal track.

  • Great band, still out there doing it!!!!

  • I remember a Rosemary from elementary school.....she was cute..i found out later she married , moved to the valley and grew MARIJUANA for profit...oh well, if that aint LOVE, well.......it does work well

  • This song describes my gf perfectly...unfortunately the song should be called rosemary the bipolar wreck...she fuck'd up my life...that whore!

  • i worked on the roof of the drummer parents house does that almost make me a pop star

  • @unclemort1960 George Weyman's Parents?

  • @strofca i`ve no idea of the drummers name but his family lived in semi not a lighthouse theres not much call for lighthouses in wimbledon

  • @unclemort1960 Then it wasn't the Drummer's parents. The Drummer was George Weyman & he lived in Maidenhead.

  • @strofca prehaps the elderly couple whose roof i worked on had aspirations for their son to be a pop star but he became a solicitor

  • Gosh, reminds me of my childhood and going to El Paso to see my Aunt Rosa, and my cousin Manuel going to Vietnam. Bittersweet.

  • I love this song. I was 14 when it first came out, and I was the target audience. Still one of my favorites from a time when things were simpiler and nicer.

  • That's a funky bass line they've got there! I dare say a bit like Rick Danko. Is that like a pick/slap combo he's got going on there?

  • Obviously great and one of the earliest records I can remember.

  • Yep, the oldies are the best.

  • These were the days of black & white Television.

  • thank christ the sex pistols and ramones came along .i like 60s music but we had this slow crap right up until 1975

  • @runtburger2

So the Who etc were slow? What planet were you living on?

Well the crap 80s came along,

with the crap 90s and today it's worse than crap.

  • @da162da its just my view thats all. planet earth

  • @runtburger2 I take it that you do not particularly like 'MOR' pop music - which is fair enough. Each to their own and all that. However, there is no need to insult the successful artists and groups [such as Donny Osmond; Gilbert O'Sullivan; The New Seekers; Dawn featuring Tony Orlando; and Edidson Lighthouse, etc] who were renowned for making music of this genre, back in the 70's.

You wouldn't like it if a "You Tube" viewer posted a derogatory comment about your favourite 'punk' bands.

  • Great song, back in the day when the music was real. Seriously, music today sucks. The artists of today are more about their image and popularity. Whatever happened to being dedicated to the music? What happened to writing your own songs and playing your own instruments and not using synthesizers to enhance your singing?

  • @Actraiser64 brilliantly put !!!!!!!

  • Thanks Guys...a REAL GOOD GUY and I was judging by the look...must remember it was way back in the mid60's cool...

    sounds like and interesting man!

  • @Bigum99 As a mattter of fact, the archive footage [above] of Sir Jimmy Savile presenting an edition of 'Top Of The Pops' was recorded in the January of 1970 - NOT back in the mid-1960's, as you seem to think. That said, the fact that the footage is in black n white - not colour - does make it look somewhat more ancient than it actually is.

I guess that 1970 was way before your time! As a matter of fact, I was only 5 in that year - and I am now well into middle-age (unfortunately).

  • Who's the FREAK introducing the band.

Looks like Lurch on the Adams Family!

    Scary...addict

  • @Bigum99 That would be Jimmy Saville. One of the EARLIEST UK DJ's that predated pirate radio - spinning discs in a dance hall and by his claim - inventing disco. He was a regular presenter on BBC Top of the Pops. A miner who was injured and told he would never walk again - he threw away his back brace and made himself a career in the 1950's. As of 2010 he is still performing voluntary work at Stoke Mandeville hospital - pushing wheelchairs and raising money for the disadvantaged.

  • Thank you, UK, for yet another wonderful band! I always loved this song and had no clue they were Brits. But I shoulda!

  • This was number one on the day I was born!

  • singer looks different to one i saw

    on a 72 version

  • That's 'cos this is the original singer, Tony Burrows. The other version is the same vocal with someone miming to it.

  • tony burrows wow never realised it was him,

  • I dj'ed with these guys in 1970 at the Chartered Accountants Annual Ball at Hurlingham House in Fulham. Nice bunch of geezers. They also had a steel band there.

  • Still the only genuine incarnation of this band.

  • Yes, this is the real deal & 2 of them are still packing them in.

  • 29 January 1970 ... It was forty years ago to-date!

  • Do you think that studio musicians such as Tony Burrows and Ron Dante should be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

  • @pacmanindy Definitely! The Hall is thinking of inducting session musicians.

  • Just checked this out .. they are playing at light house club at shoreham by sea 8 till midight

  • Yes, they probably are but what I'm saying is they are not the real Edison lighthouse, they simply bought the name. Not an original among them.

  • @strofca ok thanks for info .. didnt go anyway as were snowed in !! met my husband when this was number one many years ago .. merry xmas

  • Comment removed

  • Edison lighthouse arer playing tonight at harbour.. club shoreham beach sussex sat 19th dec.. they bring back lots of memories

  • Not the real Edison lighthouse, they're playing in Padstow!

  • will check this out ....thought i was going out tonight to see thembin shoreham

  • I remember this song well when I was at School.

  • Having read the comments. I was shocked and surprised that Dave and Stuart are retiring this year. Thank you Edison Lighthouse for coming into my life in the 70's when I was growing up and the song was brilliant and it is now still better than today's music. May I wish them both well and a long happy healthy retirement. xxxxx

  • Thanks so much for the info. I wish them well. They are too young to retire tho. :)

  • This is so sad. We were hoping they'd venture out & decide to come to the US sometime. Would love to see them in Virginia. I wonder why they are retiring? They are too good to stop singing now. Good luck to them in whatever they do in the future.

  • Did Merlin Q have out any records? Just wondering.

  • Andy Locke on his pages 'Here is the 'true' Edison Lighthouse story . Love Grows was written by Tony Mcauley /Barry Mason, and recorded by bell records , using session musicians and Tony Burrows on vocals. They auditioned a young band, who apperared on Top of the Pops. Tony didnt want to tour, so the band went out as a 4 piece. We were offered the job a year later, and were told the young band had been let go. The follow up "Petula" was also session men but with new singer ,Paul Vigrass'

  • We can only hope such music does come back - we need it now, more than ever.

  • @pierstheoneandonly Yeah what they said!

  • This song used to stick in my head for days. Now, it'll stick with me for the rest of the month! A catchy fun tune, bringing back those memories of days gone by.

  • Howz about that them

  • its amazing their not yelling or wackin; hoes! and its still a great song after all these years, do yuo think this music will ever come back?

  • I'd love to see it come back. The 60's & 70's were the best times ever for music.

  • @cherylharrell1961

    that´s right

  • @cherylharrell1961 i couldn't agree with you more i'm an oldies d.j and i love playing these songs.

  • Great songwriting and singing. Even to my 10 year old ears, those harmonies were thrilling.

  • Stupid?? Members of the band?? If you wern't so ignorant you would know that the "band" were only session artists in the studio. They were not a group who had formed and done clubs/pubs etc. As to ownership laws, you are confusing copyright with recording rights, the BBC do not "own" anything, they have loyalty rights to anything they record. Artists on TOTP dont go scrouging to the BEEB to get shown on the programme, quite the opposite!!

  • Too true. Much like the Archies were just session musicians put together for the single "Suger Suger".

  • Comment removed

  • I think it was actually four - he was also the vocalist on Gimme Dat Ting by The Pipkins

  • Tell me there's not a book or movie about Tony Burrows in 1969.....

  • According to wikipedia Tony Burrows appeared three times on TOTP in three different groups on one show! Cant see it myself but know he fronted many bands including Whie Plains.

  • It's true, Tony Burrows appeared with Edison Lighthouse, White Plains and The Brotherhood of Man on the same TOTP show in early 1970. He was involved with all three groups who were in the top 10 at the time.

  • Tony Burows was banned by TOTP after this appearance which seriously affected his career, singles being his lifeblood.

  • Yes Tony Burrows was a member of the original Edison Lighthouse and this IS the original Edison Lighthouse in the video. Thank you

  • was Rosemarys baby a love child?

  • She's talking crap and she knows it!

  • Check with gemspa you might get a surprise

  • I see there's still no clips of Vigrass, Locke & Co with a version of this song,.........strange?

  • Actually there is one of them WITHOUT Vigrass on here, The colour footage of a band miming to it was filmed in 1971 on the steps of Bristol Town hall. Locke claims he was the one miming to Tony Burrow's vocals. his group were called Merlin Q so I believe.

  • Rosemary was my 1st love song is so dear to me

  • This is one of Gov. Sanford's new theme songs.

  • i heard this song was written about grace

  • Was Tony Burrows a member of the original Edison Lighthouse? I'm curious. I always thought he was. Please let me know. Thanks. JM

  • Yes, he was.

  • Oh! they were the happiest days ever

Lvemedo , Great share Cheers for that

  • Yes! this is it. I'm quite new to all this PC techno stuff but this is the Edison lighthouse I remember that had the hit Love grows. Don't know about all that controversy surrounding the colour clip but this is definitely the original band. So glad I've found it.

  • It's a real journey to the golden past. Great job! Thanks for sharing it and a hug from Brazil.

  • My mums name is Rosemary (spelt differently I know) and we always called this "mums song" growing up lol :)

  • Now this is definitely Edison lighthouse!

  • rare - thanks for posting!

  • no problem, great song eh!

  • Greenfields auditioned to play as Edison Lighthouse on hear. the actual recording is not them.

  • ov hi song!

  • No, they don't suck. They're great! :)

  • Tony Burrows singing. Had many hits, but none in his own name.

  • This song was good. But what else have they ever done?

  • Shite one hit wonders.

  • No, they're really good. Trust me.

  • i saw them yesterday! They performed in pendine!

  • Is this the Stuart Edwards (Edisons) version of the group which is in this vid? If so cool. If not then it was the imposters lol.

  • Sadly you didn't see these guys in Pendine, just somebody calling themselves Edison lighthouse,...Con men!

  • Such a different world back then.

  • I remember it. It was good and I was 15 then

  • shame on the BBC for erasing top of the pops from the 60's and 70's,this episode should be in colour, remember it well

  • Im mainly an 80s music fan but this song is just outstanding!!!!!!

  • Big hit in the USA too!!!

  • I just feel sorry for anyone that missed the 60s and 70s....just the best time for music, and to be alive!

  • i remember it,good times mini skirts good music, you are so right, also good half cab buses

  • One of the best songs ever!....Thanks so much!!

  • simply fantastic...I grew up listening to 50s, 60s and 70s music.

  • I do too. It's my favorite era. :)

  • You sound like my parents lol. They lived thru the 60's and 70's but never experienced them. Trust me the 70's were a good time and the 60's too. And there are plenty of good folks out there with long hair. I know a few of them. If you hate the 70's stuff, you oughta hear the junk they have out today & pass for music. Makes the oldies sound like classical music lol. This is great music. Long live the 60's & 70's. :)

  • "we fought a war for you"...my goodness I haven't heard that for years and years. You know I think that it was sour grapes because my parents (the war generation) had lost their teenage years fighting WW2. We were the first generation in many many years to not have to go to war and enjoy our teenage years having FUN in the 60's and 70's.

  • i loved the 60"s and 70"s

  • me too...the best of all the years

  • Fantastic tape and fantastic song...bringing back my 1970 memories!

  • The time code seems to be wrong. The UK TV system only goes up to 25 frames a second. This goes over 30. Why?

  • This was edited together from a tape that was given to the band by the BBC, this the band personal tape copy!

  • That is so cool! I am so glad this was saved & you put it out there for folks to see. Thanks for putting this video up. This is a wonderful video of a beautiful song.

  • How did you "edit" this?

All it is is a copy of a "tele Recording" a 16mm film recording from a monitor for overseas sales. this has been retained (or handed back) by the Beeb and the copy you have is from the BBC Film a Video Tape Libary. who sell Timecoded copys of anything as long as you have enough money!!

  • BUBBLE GUM BAND....

  • brings back many happy memories........:-)

  • This is the REAL Edison Lighthouse not the Fake Lipscynching band on the other Vid.

  • What a wonderful pop song.

  • I just remembered I had saved a copy of that video on my computer from YouTube. So I have \uploaded it to YouTube so folks can still see it. Enjoy! :)

  • Thanks for the info. Had no idea that one had been removed. I too wonder why it was removed? On the upside I saw where a new video of ya'lls song Every Lonely Day is up on YouTube now. It has some cute pics of ya'll in it. An extra bonus that they're cute too as well as singing good. :)

  • Anyone know why the jaggme TOTP clip has been removed?

  • So nostalgic for me....Just rising 15 when this came out..."Early months of 1970"...yet was able to get served in (some) pubs....Amazing what a fair bit of bum fluff can do :-)...Used to go to Pink Parakeet club...Bricket Wood, near St Albans friday nights....Jan-April that year......Must bring back wonderful memories for others too!

  • what a massive arse-knuckle

  • They are so cute on here! Wow, the British had some cuties back then. Yum... :)

  • Good old days !! Thanks for posting.

  • Spell, well, hey-hey-hey :D

  • lovely song, reminds me of a hot sunny day and a funky little motorcycle ,good times come on back soon please...

  • simply fantastic...I grew up listening to 50s, 60s and 70s music.

  • Yes it is good my friends- Bow down to the Edison Lighthouse beyotches.

  • (Cont)I think the cute lead singer guy in the other vid of this song is the one that replaced Tony Burrows. I think I vaguely remember seeing some sort of vid of him doing this song with the group. Both he & Tony Burrows are cute. I have a 45 of this song which I got either when I was in high school or early 20's yrs ago. My hubby also has the cd of Edison Lighthouse & it is really good. So glad to see one of the group on here. I do hate how imposters are posing as the group. Great song!

  • (Cont) I remember both ads were done as a promotional to advertise joining the US Airforce because at the time they were trying to get more people to join the Armed Forces here in the US due to the fact the Vietnam War was going on at the time which was causing folks to not want to join up. I dunno how I remember those ads considering how bad a memory I have lol.

  • (Cont)

Tony Burrows narrated in the ad while all this was going on saying Hello this is Tony Burrows of Edison Lighthouse & talking about how you could join the US Fair Force. I remember the ads was shown alot during shows like Gomer Pyle etc. David Cassidy also did a similar ad for the US Air Force where the Partridge Family song "I'll Meet You Halfway" played in the background.

  • I love this song & always have ever since it first came out.

I remember back when this song was a big hit all over the place that Tony Burrows did an ad here in the US for the US Air Force that had this song in it. In the ad while this song was playing they would show pics of Air Force people, men & women like Air Force Pilots and Nurses. (The nurses wore the old fashioned nurses caps)

(Running out of space here. Will post the rest in another comment)

  • You aren't the only one who remembers those ads I was 6 years old and remember the Air Force using Badfinger's Come and Get It and also Gary Puckett's This Girl's A Woman Now...I even think Shirley Jones did the narration...

  • i love that song!

  • tony burrows is the lead singer. This group was made up of session players. Tony Burrows also sang lead with a few other groups. "First choice". (beach baby) and the brotherhood of man to mention a few.

  • They certainly weren't "Session" players

  • Thanks for the video. I'm super confused about Edison Lighthouse. I looked up the band's wikipedia article and some sites on them. The thing that confuses me is I saw the music video here on youtube and after watching this perfomance, EVERYONE looks different. In the music video, the bassist had long blond hair and the lead singer looked like David Cassidy in the 60s with long brown hair. If anyone could help me out, I would appreciate it because I don't know who is who in either video.

  • The fact is this is the original line up. The colour clip is a later version after this band split.

In the colour clip they are simply miming to the original band.

  • Great song! Just heard it on our radio station.

  • This certainly is the real band Muppet!!

  • of course there real you noob.

  • Who's the bloke who's the host (with the long blond hair)?

  • The host is Jimmy Saville (UK DJ).

  • do you not know Jimmy!!!?-hows about that then

  • Proof that there is life on Uranus and here she is!

  • This band sung happy bday to my mum last year :-)

  • Where?

  • St. Tudy in cornwall when we were on holiday

  • Stuart & Dave right? Brilliant!!

  • Certainly are
