actually, when the water in the wood is frozen, it is easiest to split. But, it all depends on the wood. For example, ash is easier to split when green/wet then when dry.....and i suggest ditching that axe and getting a maul/splitting axe. Also, i would stray from any maul over 8lbs, any more then that and you lose a lot of speed in your swing. speed compensates for mass.
Careless and dangerous. An axe should never be thrown or placed on the ground after use.

Thoreau said that firewood warms you twice, once when you cut it and again when you burn it. Here we have evidence that he was right. Great workout.

Agree. An axe can be very dangerous, besides- I've seen horrible leg injuries self-inflicted by experienced backwoodsmen.
IME, a 6-lb maul works better than 8-lb. Might be the higher speed.

no wet wood is easier too split when it drys out it's harder to split

8lb maul ,couple wedges, sledge hammer and dont forget your chainsaw for the problem children (knotty pieces)

And yeah, splitting mauls are a hell of a lot better. Unless you just want the workout.

Axes are NOT wood splitting tools.......get a splitting maul and save yourself 4-5 strokes!
With that red oak, you'd split it with ONE hit.

Take it from me,,(lumberboy) use a maul, its a lot better,,,,

if you used a 10lb or 14lb Moll insted of a Ax, it would have gone through that red oak a lot easier then bounching off it :)
