  • Very, very nice. Good rendition. And Michelle is very easy on the eyes. Bravo.

  • you two just blew my mind, so glad I found your video, smiling big NOW !

  • Yamaha P250??

  • Very very good. I cannot seem to find a version of this song. Is there a certain album or session that bill evans is featured on?

    ?

  • @qzguitar there's a short version of it in mark levines jazz pianist book

  • gorgeous voice my darling. x

  • What a beautiful rendition of one of my favorite tunes. Kudos to the vocalist and the piano player! (From a bass player) I always thought what a great lyric for a memorial service or funeral (if the singer could hold it together...)

  • This is so useful, thankyou! Working with a singer at the moment and as it's nothing either of us have really done this will help so much!

    Beautiful playing/singing too :-)

  • I got a lump in my throat and something in my eye. Damn! Amazing!!

  • man , so much bill evans's influence in your playing

rhythmic approach ,modal chord ,even few single line that you've played ,reminding me of bill evans so much

    thx , nice music

  • Fantastico...Show...muito show...

Piano e voz de altissimo nivel...

    Um grande abraço....

  • Perfect love song. Haunting and melancholy. I love it.

  • Very nice-thanks 4 posting. For me,one of the most gorgeous versions I've heard was done by Rebecca Parris,on her aptly titled "Love Comes And Goes". Also, check out Fred Hersch doing it solo on his "You Never Told Me" release. If there's a more touching version.I haven't heard it yet. Here's to great songs w/ beautiful lyrics-and the performers who breath life into them.

  • A 1 and 2:

In the evening, when the kettle's on for tea,

an old familiar feeling settles over me,

and it's your face I see,

and I believe that you are there.

In a garden, when I stop to touch a rose,

and feel the petals soft and sweet against my nose,

    I smile and I suppose

that somehow maybe you are there...

  • B and A 3 with Coda: When I'm dreaming, and I find myself awake without a warning, and I rub my eyes and fantasize and all at once I realize it's morning and my fantasy is fading like a distant star at dawn, my dearest dream is gone, I often think there's just one thing to do... pretend the dream was true... and tell myself that you are there.
  • i need the lyric of this song! please anyone!!!!

  • awesome work.

  • melody on the first "are there" is incorrect...

it's different than the "are there" on the second A...it makes a difference..check it out

  • Beautifully done, thanks for posting.

  • What kind of mic were you using?

  • An old Senheiser that I just retired! Gone to a Shure Beta 87a. Michelle

  • Thanks, Michelle! How exactly did you record the video and the sound together? Just because I don't see a microphone in front of you.

    Kata

  • Yeah that was pretty funny - it was our first time doing these and Doug was juggling cables and whatnot, we did the recording then realised video hadn't recorded or I think piano either - so we went ahead and did it again with Doug playing and me lip-synching over my own vocal - really tricky as I never do it the same twice! Doug sorted out the process very quickly, he is amazing. We don't do rehearsals or second takes even, so we thought- whatever.. next song....x

  • Doug

thank you...great playing behind the singer ( that I find absolutely fantastic) and great solo also...your music fulls my soul up anytime i listen to it.Thank you!

  • all those people who can play piano at this level, the wont need to watch it, or read what's on the screen.

They'll just listen it and polay it.

  • ma che cazzo dici imbecille, se sei così bravo mettite al pianoforte e facce vedè quanto sei bravo.

  • Oh, and of couse, the great Johnny Mandel, without whose music, this wouldn't exist. Thanks again for posting.

  • Absolutely gorgeous. I saw Dave Frishberg perform this at somebody's house. One of the greatest songwriters we have. This rendition of yours is so beautiful. The singer is a tremendous talent. Spine-tingling, capturing the essence of, but without imitating the great Blossom Dearie, but better. Wow, just amazing.

Did I mention I liked this?

  • who is singing this i like her

  • This is great stuff. A jazz piano teacher who can help me out, this truly is a blessing.

  • Dough,

You are probably the best inspiration I have had in jazz piano voicing and chord dynamics. I have learnt a whole new way to accompany a jazz vocalist

    Thank you so much.

  • Can you give me any pointers for my playing improvement?

  • Man.... I am speechless!!!

  • Thanks again, Doug & Michelle. I was looking for something in the vein of Frishberg or Mose Allison and much to my surprise there it was - You Are There - with Mandel's famous harmony and Frishberg's lyric wit. I've noticed that Diana Krall is partial to Mandel pieces and I can hear why. Noticed that you have it in F instead of the original D, for Michelle. I'm moving it to Eb to make it easy for either Eb or Bb instruments. Thanks to you I'm committed to learning it.

  • Fantastic video!. Acoustics are fantastic. Learninf a lot from the masters!

    THanks

  • Jazz2511, just wanted to thank you for all this learning material.. it's really helping me out. Those comments during the song are very helpful..

    Thanx again.

  • OH MY GOD! I want you both at my wedding ^_^ I cant describe how happy I felt watching and listening to you both. Doug you are truly the epitome of inspiration. I'm so privileged to have found you on youtube, and am forever grateful for the kind advice and tutoring you give us all here. 5 stars

  • I want more...and more...and more.....

  • Simply B. E. A. Utiful

Your Singer's vocals tend to come out just like Natalie Cole's, which is not a bad thing at all.

You should do more songs with her, Please. :)

  • haha, you playbacked the video. I was wondering where the mic was; now I understand ;)

  • Is that important?? It's a piano tutorial.. Just say thanx.

  • she's a jazz vocalist?

  • Very nice!

  • it's so fun to see you contorting your body and full of facial expressions....That tells me not only you enjoy playing, but you also let your music go in you :)

  • I think the piano needs to go up alittle ...or put the vocals down..

  • Great

  • There is a real talent required to accompany a vocalist in such a tasteful and complimentary fashion as you do in this video. Fantastic voicings and dynamics throughout made for a wonderful listening experience. Bravo.

  • wow - that's all I can say. Worked so incredibly well together. You work with this vocalist often?

  • Beautiful Song! She got really power on her voice, refined accompanyment! Great Duo!*****

  • Your style really lends itself to this type of beautiful accompaniment. Very nuanced and creative.

  • Beautiful complement together. Love this song selection. Thanks.

  • You were both incredible.
