I teach English for a living in Southeast Asia, and believe me when I say that only a handful of people in Asia (4 billion people) speak Spanish. At least a billion people across Asia are studying English, whereas only about 10 million are learning Spanish. The point is that English is the only global language, whereas Spanish is confined to only a dozen or so nations and places. I do, however, encourage all Americans to learn Spanish, as it is useful if you travel south of the border.

Last time I checked by history Spanish was spoken in places of the United States before english, therefore making it more official than english. Since it has more status officially than english. after they got rid of the english only proposal that lasted 13 years (1980-1993). miami main language is spanish and also changed the face of miami dade county forever. today hispanics according to the 2010 census is over 65% of the county population. so, spanish is the main language of miami dade county. a language that you can hear everywhere. the arrival of cuban refugees on the mariel boatlift back in 1980 originated this controversial issue.

I travel to Spain every year to visit family and friends, no one suspects I'm "American" ( rarely do as my Spanish does not betray an accent unlike Gringos who can't speak for shit). The maker of this video should look at the rate of English acquisition and Spanish language loss that is occurring among US-born Hispanics in Miami. Are there a lot of people who don't speak English in Miami? Yes, thousands, but what would you expect in a city where more than half of the population is foreign born. Yet look at their children and you will see that in the vast majority of cases English is the preferred and dominant language.

It is imperative to learn the language of the country one plans to reside in. Although, "I" do believe that perhaps Spanish should be considered as a second language; considering the fact of how many Latinos/Hispanics reside in the U.S. By far this ethnic/ratio is the largest. @In5an3Cuban Not true Spanish is the most simple language to learn. The way the word sounds when spoken is usually always the way it is written down. English is one of the most difficult. Take for example the word "glass". A person attempting to learn English would think its spelled "glas" which makes sense but no it has two s's.
