  • Intonation, phrasing, voice, charm, looks. She's got it all! A++

  • How sweet !

  • I think Anita with or without dope was one of the best jazz vocalists. Superb sense of timing, dynamism and musical expression. RIP sweet princess.

  • I just discovered Anita O'Day last night on the Bio Channel . . . SHAME ON ME!! Where the heck have I been? I was absolutely knocked to the ground by her talent. The woman was such a vocalist . . . her timing, you just can't beat it. And she was so chic to boot.

  • @paul51 "knocked to the ground by her talent"! Me too totally! She is One Of A Kind. The more I listen the more I here it, she was a genius.

  • OK, I hate to focus on the sordid aspects of her life, but does anyone know if she was still shooting dope when she performed this concert? I saw the trailer for the documentary of her life here on youtube.

She said that she was shooting up several times a day when she gave the performance at Newport featured in Jazz on a Summer Day.

Watching a woman in her eighties talk about the old days shooting dope with Charlie Parker was....well not something you see every day.

  • Can you give me the link, please?

  • Afrolady, I tried to post the link but it looks as if it won't post. So, just do a search on youtube. The documentary is called Anita O'Day Life of a Jazz Singer.

  • Thank you.

  • yes she was.

  • @TreblePop

Just look at her face. You answers are there.

  • Oh, in this concert in Tokyo, not only Anita, but all those musicians were completly inspired.

  • Anita's timing was impeccable!

  • @OlymPigs2010

Yes, great timing. A mix of on the beat and just behind beats.

  • Anita, you are still my favorite. Always a pro.

  • Wonderful! Wolf

  • this is sooo good, thanks Dennis

    Tony

  • she was still jamming well into her 80s. She is missed.

  • Who is the bassist? He's really good, he has a "perfect sound", in my opinion

  • Itz amazing to listen to the japanese bandmembers.Let me see if i can find his name.

  • Ok, thanks! Anyway, this performance is amazing, not only the bassist

  • I can inform you about the members. Pianist Bob Corwin came with Anita. Drummer Takeshi INOMATA was one of the leading drummers in those days and led his band "West liners". Bassist Tatsuro TAKIMOTO and saxophonist Tadayuki HARADA were members of this band. All of three are still alive and play still so nice. West liners also did tour in Japan with June Christy and Bob Cooper a few years before 1963.

  • Thanks! I didn't know them, but they're amazing!
