  • The embraced couple on the lower left corner of the piece at 2.02 is taken directly from a painting by Dubuffet entitled "the Kiss". Fascinating. Thanks for this video of a really great artist..

  • I have never been too enchanted by her clowning-she is deft and certainly energetic, yet the work, especially the larger ,seems static,in that everything has the same weight, and looks almost tidy-I don't feel the people are real, unless she knows only zombies-it seems almost childish.

  • its nice to see some figurative works and not that same and tired geometric abstract shit NYC is pedaling these days.

  • I agree totally with MrWowforever. Thanks James.

    Best -

  • je suis un artiste francais et je trouve que james kalm assure

    JAMES KALM ROCK...........!!!!!

  • James, do we know how much is one of the big paintings?

  • i.l.i.k.e.t.h.i.s.o.n.e -t.o.o

  • It's good. Great job guy on the bike.

  • I like these paintings, Nicole Eisenman a great long term investment.

    Thanks James

  • If someone was wary about doing expressionist type work this is good example of current expressionism and (someone might jump on this, I am not an art expert) but the forms and colors remind me of low brow art to an extent.

  • I can understand "low brow" forms, but low brow colors?

BTW I'm a fan of a lot of low brow art as well as kitsch.

  • I am just thinking about the odd colors of some of the figures which is a hallmark of Expressionism. I am thinking about some of the lowbrow stuff using colors that are not natural colors as in traditional portrait paintings. Maybe I am mistaken, prehaps the low brow art might use more florescent colors. I can still in my mind see a link between Expressionism and low brow. Low brow as a kind of expressionist pop movement!

  • i think the dominance of Abstraction and Pop art in the latter half of the 20th century makes all figurative painting seem lowbrow, or secondary. Whenever a painter uses figures or a viewer sees figures we all go to older models immediately. Munch, Van Eyck, Kirchner, etc. Photography and video distort the painterly approach to the body and mediate it. The challenge is to make flesh new.....DeKooning tried(succeded) for years. It's a great time to be a (figurative) painter!

  • I have seen in reproductions some really great stuff being done out as far as figurative work goes. I like visual images and that can be abstract, realism, lowbrow, etc. If I lived in NYC I would definitely go to this show. Actually if I lived in NYC I would probably attend many of the shows that James posts here. If I wasn't at the openings I would be there after seeing his postings. A good way to see stuff new and stuff that suits ones taste by viewing and then going to what appeals.

  • Thanks James. This is one of the most exciting exhibitions that you've shared in a while. The Dana Schutz show was similarly exciting, but the power of these pieces with the use of several styles and approaches and the old french painting references is fantastic. Truly important paintings in my opinion.

  • great post james, thanks!

  • very good

  • Thanks, James.

  • thanks for showing this work. i love it and wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

  • she is a good painter. painting the art books shes lookin at is revealing, fun and brave. thanks
