Spot on! These robots were programmed to learn. Anything outside of their code and they will not respond to it. It surely gives the illusion that is is learning like a toddler would, but it is nowhere near the actual thing. It's so basic. I see where you are trying to get, but from what I've been taught and from personal experience, it is impossible to give a computer actual emotion, that is, with today's current methods. Computers do nothing more than follow instructions on their coding and no other factor plays any role whatsoever. A HUGE leap, a method entirely different would be needed to create a synthetic brain that mimics our own brain at it's fullest. Even so, both will never be in the same branch.

@danielsanichiban But computers can now learn from example. for example, Watson, the computer built by IBM and beat the human champions on Jeapordy, learns how to recognize alphebetical letters by seeing a few different examples of a leter in different fonts. it only takes a few examples for the computer to understand. same with ASIMO, the most advanced robot we have today. And, this stuff is advancing extremely fast.

And yes, computers have been programmed to respond to outside inputs in ways that where not specifically programmed. Look up neural networks and generic/evolutionary algorithms.
@Ratama You can't just program a robot to know everything. We can do that now. But the real trick is to allow it to learn and evolve by itself, so that it won't become obselete once a new fact is figured out. Adaptation without input from the coder is ideal, self improving code. Look at some neural networking stuff and you will see what i mean.

And yes, computers have been programmed to respond to outside inputs in ways that where not specifically programmed. Look up neural networks and generic/evolutionary algorithms.

@Ratama You can't just program a robot to know everything. We can do that now. But the real trick is to allow it to learn and evolve by itself, so that it won't become obselete once a new fact is figured out. Adaptation without input from the coder is ideal, self improving code. Look at some neural networking stuff and you will see what i mean.
