I learned this in a different way, with it going G in the beginning. Your tutorial is a very big help on this song ( I'm the only one who plays piano in my school so I have to play along with the chorus) YOU ARE MY LIFE PIANO JOHN!
Hi John. On the chorus to Blackbird, when you sing, "Into the light of the dark black night," instead of a straight D chord try a D octave on the left hand and F# C F(natural) on the right, which sounds dischordant in isolation but seems to work well in that spot. Rick Kupfer
@Rickster0813 Wonderful suggestion, Rick. The sharped 9th would work perfectly with the dissonant melody note on the lyric "light." I think I was trying to find the right flavor of that part when I did the video, and you supplied it for me there. :-)
@pianojohn113 Hello, just wondering if you have any idea what grade this would be? I want to do it for a performance at school but I need to know what grade it is. Thanks
@edwardpaddywagon I don't use the sheets, as this is my own arrangement. But the chords can be found in many different places - a good resource is the Beatles Complete Scores, a book published by Hal Leonard.
you dont think you could post a slower version for the "strumming" parts? or maybe just write down the notes in sequence, I'm having trouble following those parts! and this is a great arrangement... thanks in any case!
@Juanpagamevideos screw off troll. this is a place for learning and listening to great music. not for your bull shit remarks. save that for smosh and call of duty gameplay
Have anybody told you that you are a God's send (that's OK if you don't believe in God too). Your videos are very inspiring!!! I really want to pick up my piano skill again! Thanks so much for the videos & lessons!
@DreamingInReverse I don't transcribe the sheets, so it's really up to the person who does them. I'm not sure which songs he might be doing next, but if Blackbird is posted, I'll be sure to let you know.
@TheActiveChristian The LH pattern is G-G-D-G (5th finger, thumb, index, thumb), RH alternates the thumb and index fingers on the B and D, all while holding the pedal down. Play each one note at a time.
so i get what keys to play for the strumming technique, but i'm kinda confused as to what order they're played in. if you could somehow explain further, that would be awesome, and much appreciated!! thank you
@iRaiinbowSharpiie You can do them in any order, really although I usually play it like this: LH 5th finger, then LH thumb, then RH thumb, then LH 3rd finger, then RH 2nd finger. Repeat from there. But again, you can play them in any order you like.
Your amazing! I'm pretty obssessed with the beatles music especially sir Paul but I don't really play guitar, that's why I love you so much. Can I request your piano version of This Never Happened Before? a very beautiful song by the only Sir Paul McCartney. Please =)
could you please do a tutorial of how to play "dance with somebody" by mando diao! there isn't a tutorial out there and i really want to learn it and your the best one to teach it.
Your like my idol! My grandma is coming on Monday and she is really snobby(I love her, though) and I needed something to play for her on piano, and this helps a lot!!! Thank you!!!
this is great, helpful as always! thank you so much! However, maybe it is because my internet sucks but I'm having a hard time figuring out the struming sound...no matter how I finger it it never sounds quite right. Do you think you could maybe tell me how it's done? I'm sorry, I just cant catch it from the vid...
@44purpleperp Yeah, the strumming sound is achieved by taking a chord and alternating playing one note in the LH and one in the RH. To practice, place LH fingers 5, 3, and 1 on a triad chord, and RH fingers 1, 2, and 5 on the same triad in its second inversion. (C-E-G in LH, E-G-C in RH). Then, play LH 5 and RH 5 (pinky fingers) together, followed by LH 1 (thumb), then RH 1, then LH 3, then RH 2 as single notes. Use the pedal for effect. Do it slowly, then speed up as you get used to it.
@jsarcs66 Yes, use the pedal, and keep your fingers poised above the notes of the chords. Then alternate left and right hand, playing individual notes.
Another great lesson & so well taught. I wonder where you chord arrangements are so impressive could keep in mind the song "Alone Again Naturally" which I just can't seem to get it right. The key of C would be much appreciated. Keep up the good work and can't wait for more of your great uploads. Many thanks for sharing.
Hey pianojohn113. Keep doing what your doing. I love your tutorials. Do you know Peaceful, Easy Feeling by the Eagles? It would be a good song to do a tutorial on. If not American Pie by Don Mclean.
@FOOAU I've played that intro a few times on an electric piano, it's really fun. I don't play it quite as well as it sounds on the original record, but I'm working on it!
You are awesome pianojohn113! Everybody knows it. Is there a chance that you'll translate Paul's "I Will" to the piano sometime? Thanks for all your videos!
this is really great and i am following every detail... you are a very good instructor.... you have the finest detail in teaching this awesome beatles song...

Keep in mind I am struggling to understand just how time sig's really work. thanx buddy!
@jamesmykal No problem, time signatures can be confusing.. "Hello, Goodbye" is in 4/4 time. (6/8 time is actually a waltz tempo). The rhythmic chords that are played are eighth notes, so it might sound like the tempo is faster than it really is. But it's in common time. You're right, though, there are a lot of beats per measure in that one.. lots of eighth notes through the whole song!
@pianojohn113 Thank you so much for responding. Your explanation will help me quite a bit. Would it be correct to say that the chords are played in "double time"? Or could you call it 8/8 time? thank you for reading my queries! James
@jamesmykal You could say that eighth notes are "double time," in a manner of speaking. Played on beat, they are twice as fast as quarter notes. But I think a more accurate description of a full song in "double time" would be one that's played in "cut time." That's a time signature notated with a "C" with a line struck through it. In that instance, a whole note is a half note, a half note is a quarter note, etc. Confusing, huh? :-)
could anyone spell out the fills for me note by note like those around 55s and 2m15s, 2m39s, 3m, 3m12s, 3m31, 3m55s. Maybe If I got one right I could do the others, but I just can't figure them out to sound exactly like pianojohn plays them.
@zoellapetite All I'm doing there is taking the notes of the chords and breaking them up into individual random notes, while holding the pedal down at the same time. Usually I'll alternate a left hand note with a right hand note too.
@pianojohn113 I still can't figure out the exact order your playing them in. If you could tell me the first one I could probably do the rest. I'm trying to make mine sound like yours do it but it just comes out weak. I guess I never really learned to play any random technique that mimics strumming.
@zoellapetite I had to look at it slowly again, because I do it without thinking about it.. Here's what I'm doing, using a D chord (D-F#-A in LH, D-F#-A-D in RH) as an example, playing each single note and using the pedal: LH-D & RH-upper D together, then LH-A, RH-lower D, LH-F#, RH-F#, LH-A. Let me know if that sounds right to you, or if it even makes sense!
Everytime you put up a new video, it's like falling in love with playing all over again! Thank you for making those few piano lessons I had 30 years ago pay off!!
Hey, I noticed at one point you write the c minor chord out as "C D# G." Being as I am a bit of a theory geek it pains me to see "D#" (an augmented second) rather than an "E♭" (minor third).
@DesmonJones Yeah, I'm with you on that one, "Eb" is normally my default name for that note in a Cm chord. But since we're in G on this one, I've got to stick with sharps just to be accurate. Frankly, I hate sharps, have a much easier time with flats, even though there's really no difference between the two!
I thank you so much with your tutorials !!! I've impressed my dad alot of times on how I played and learned alot of Beatles music . I hope alot more beatles favorite music will come by on your tutorials :) Godbless Sir John!!! :) - Judith ;)
Hey pianojohn. I know you get alot of requests but there isn't one good tutorial on piano for Peaceful Easy Feeling by the Eagles or American Pie by Don Mclean on YouTube.
