I think its in The Similarion where it says that when Morgorth was overthrown, some balrogs escaped by hiding in the deep places of the world. Presumably, the "evil" that the dwarfs awakened in Moria was a Balrog, and that it had been hiding there the whole time (I guess it was hibernating).

@pepsimeblu Even though the Dwarves lust for Mithril lead them to physically unearth Durin's Bane it was probably not the Dwarves that woke him/her (dunno if a balrog can be a girl or not >.>) but actually the evil that was spreading from Dol Goldur (Sauron guised as the Necromancer) which awoke him. My hypothesis as to why it went "hibernating" was that it was probably waiting for it's lord Morgoth to come back.

You don't have to unlock them, but you can only play them at certain points during the game. Sauron, for example, can only be played at the end of the Rivendell and Shire missions. If I remember correctly, this is the only part in the game where you can play as the Balrog.

Its a fairly unbalanced game. The Balrog is the only unit in the game that is both a hero, and has no weaknesses. (Ents and trolls can be climbed to inflict great damage, and all the small heroes [even sauron] can be killed in one hit by a scout.) The balrog cant be climbed or stealth killed, and unlike ents and trolls, isnt weak to fire

It's a shame that this game didn't followed at all battlefront 2. The hero's in that game could spawn after they died but in this game you can only be an hero when you earn half of the points to win (if its 200 then 100) and if you get killed as an hero, bye bye. You can be a hero once per battle which is very frustating (even more when you're playing as Sauron and someone twice as small as you grabs you from behind and death), like being able to be Balrog only in 2 maps and Sauron in only 1 .

not exactly. sauron was already the most powerful maia of his time, and Barlogs ARE a kind of extremely powerful maia, though not that strong (the one killed by Gandalf was the LAST survivor). Sauron used his impressive power to forge the One Ring, becoming more powerful than Morgoth himself that was already the most powerful Vala.

@gigiozzolo Morgoth, if you knew anything, is still very much the Master of Sauron and will always be. If this were not true Morgoth wouldn't be able to escape his imprisonment as it is told in the Prophecy.

As for Balrogs being extinct, that is left to speculation. Durin's Bane was in dormant when it was disturbed in Khazad-dum and others could have been as well.

It is said that MOST Balrogs were wiped out during the War of Wrath, not ALL specifically.

Read again all the books. Durin's Bane was the last Balrog, and in fact Gandalf did not expect a Balrog to be still on the move at the time of frodo's quest. Moreover, of course Morgoth is Sauron's master, because Morgoth is the cause of all evil, but still, after Sauron created the ring, he became far more powerful than Morgoth. And that is not speculation.

In the War of Wrath that ended the First Age MOST Balrogs are believed to be destroyed. However they ARE Maia, powerful creatures of high race. It is left to speculation rather only one survived.

@gigiozzolo Sauron made a Ring to dominate Middle Earth, a great accomplishment, but even so his ring COULDN'T dominate everyone. In the end The Seven resisted his power so he took back the rings by force in anger. Though ultimately the Six of the Seven were still tainted and destroyed the wearers in the end.

Tolkein does say that Sauron is of a higher order of Maia than others who enter Middle Earth but never says anything about him being more powerful than Morgoth.
