I loved Cactus back in the day when Rusty Day was still alive. This doesn't have the same intensity and energy as the studio version with Rusty, but it's still good.
What a waste, someone posted CACTUS first live stuff for 30 years under "CUCTUS" instead and hardly anyone has found it ... :-( Search youtube for this "Cuctus Live @ B.B. King " ...Live from New York City June 3, 2006 Jim McCarty (Guitar), Carmine Appice (Drum), Tim Bogert (Bass), Jimmy Kunes (Vocal) and Randy Pratt (Blues Harp) ... The place was packed out
Great stuff. In the early 70s Cactus were right up there With Zep and Aerosmith and 10 Years After and Humble Pie,etc, for killer hard rock.Way too underated but thanx for posting and maybe turning on new generations of rockers to GREAT 70s BANDS like CACTUS!!
I don't want to put him down cause he does a good job, but listening to Kunes sing this just 're-emphasizes?' how great Rusty was......as if you needed him to remind you.
Brilliant song! Thanks for sharing! Cactus should've been as famous as Zep (in the historical scheme of things). But then, lots of bands should have. Heh. Anyway, cheers!
listen to the old MITCH RYDER tunes and hear McCartys "ahead of his time" riffage...though supressed for the most part on those mid-60's AM radio gems
a little note - never compare british and american 70's bands. waste of time, enjoy them for their own brilliant differences (by the way, british bands will always win!)
Zep ripoff? They are ripoffs of each other! Bonham stole all of Appice's chops, They toured together early 70, Bogert and Appice's Fudge headlined and Zep supported back in late 68/69. There isn't such a thing as ripoff when your side by side...
i use to arrange jam sessions at this club. What a place!!!Also i could never imagine that Cactus would reunion!!!This is a long way from home, can't sleep at night-Evil is goin home!!!!!!!!!
The Restrictions album was one of my all time favorites.I saw them around '77 in Macomb,Ill. Rusty Day was still the vocalist, and it was one heckuva show.John Sauter was on Bass, he later played with Ted Nugent on Weekend Warriors. Jim McCarty is truly one of the most influential rock players of all time. Thanks for putting this video up.
I agree..they were and still are stronger players than Zepplin...maybe a toss up between Bonham and Appice. Carmine was playing hard with Vanilla Fudge before Bonham was ever even heard of.
The video and sound aren't together on this particular version. I've got the DVD from this concert and it's much better in quality of production. Cactus is GREAT and I can't wait to see them live. They seem to be in top form here. Also, the V album is excellent. If anyone hasn't heard it yet, I urge them to. What a great reunion of such a fantastic group of musicians.
Saw these guys last night at the Magic Bag. They smoked! McCarty tore it up. And Carmine is still one of the best drummers rock has ever seen. Same goes for Tim Bogert on bass. The new album is great.
WOW!!! That Cactus groove is unmistakable. These guys were & still are utterly awe inspiring. Shoulda been huge, but I guess Led Zep had that market covered.
They were referred to as the poor man's Led Zep. Their version of Parchman Farm from the first album just smokes. Listen to it and you will know where Van Halen got thier idea for Hot For Teacher. And listen to Let Me Swim and you'll see where Eddie got his Eruption intro from. Saw these guys more than once at the Eastown in Detroit. Really an under appreciated band. Rusty day was the perfect front man for the original lineup. Was this new singer in any other well known band?
Rusty Day was one of the best improvising vocalists ever. He learned his craft from the great black artists and could captivate an audience like nobody else. ATCO hated him because of his drug use and never got behind the band. They were actually all stronger players than the guys in Zeppelin.
Interesting that you caught the Van Halen use of some of the ideas by Cactus, I thought it was just me! I noticed it along time ago but most of the folks in my circles had never heard of Cactus. I really dig this song as well as Cactus and Van Halen so there is really no bad news, just respect needs to go to Cactus!!!!
Yeah, Long Tall sally was my intro to them as well. They - and Carmine Appice - were one of the most under-rated groups of the era. Glad to see they've still got it.
The new singer Jimmy Kunes rocks! It's not easy to incorporate a new singer into band, but he fits well. Right on. I hope they do a full tour! Carmine Appice still punishes. So does Vanilla Fudge. Holy sh*t!
Great, thanks for posting this! My high school band in the 70's used to do their version of Long Tall Sally. Are all the original members in this lineup?
Malco23 YES, my friend..they are the original line up exept for the singer, the original voice Rusty Day died i think 1972 (no shure exaptly) but in the Cactus CD (cactology)(in the liner notes you find a good information)
Man, I just discovered this band's music a couple of months ago. Someone sent me an MP3 of "Evil" (vis-avis their hearing it on DLR's now-defunct radio show) and I haven't looked back since. I'm bummed I missed this show.

Jim McCarty should be a household name in terms of great American hard rock guitarists.
Again, possibly the best band you've never heard.
Check out "Let Me Swim," "Parchman Farm," "Restrictions," "One Way Or Another," and definitely check out their cover of "Long Tall Sally."
Listen to the intro to "Let Me Swim" and see if it sounds familiar!
