  • Loved the show , fired my imagination and probably wouldn't have taken up music without things like sweet and sour being on at that age.

  • I used to love this tv show

  • Just saw a release date of May 6 2011 for the DVD. 4 days before my birthday. What a great birthday present it will make. Hint hint wifey.

  • I'm pretty sure that when Sharon O'Neill put this on "Danced in the Fire" the song was called 'In Control'.

  • Just got the CD, and the songs are even better than I remembered. Hearing them in full CD quality really brings them to life. It's still hard to believe the quality of the contributors that Tim and Johanna solicited, and the quality of the songs they submitted, when they could have just used them for their own bands with much greater credit and probably financial reward.

  • @MrGutley I got it as well but still to listen to it (note its $8 cheaper JB HiFi than the ABC Shop)

  • When she opened that fridge I half expected to see Zool from Ghostbusters. But we got a sax solo instead. Way scarier.

  • its weird to have the singer mimed out for the vid clip

  • Listen up fans

ABC Australia has released the CD Music and the DVD is coming

    FINALLY !

    WOOO HOOOOO

  • @ggbggbggb Thanks for this excellent news. The DVD is available for pre-order worldwide from ezydvd dot com

  • seems like yesterday i was watching this after school

Tracy Mann was pretty hot back then...she's 53 now!! @@

  • I freakin' love this! if only they would release the show on dvd.

  • lol Swwet and sour, then bj mckay, muppets, dr who, then monky magic lol that was the order i watched them after i ran home from school everynight hahaha back when i was a lad

  • @legion2024 there was a Kenny everett Video show to

  • I loved the show. Watched it all the time.

  • I think the bloke is either James Rayne or his brother

  • It's the brother - David Reyne

  • its amazing to see how far video clips have come along

  • @epicshowhorsesnz This is actually the video made within the show's story. Since it was meant to be low budget in the story, and the band was struggling, it wouldn't be too realistic to have a lavish sophisticated video (which certainly did exist in 1984.)

  • i knew sandra growing up in adelaide

i remember having the hots for her to!

  • Lol at the chick in the fluro shirt dancing at 0:45

  • I thought the vocal was Deborah Conway (or at least that's what she told me). I was hushed up a bit apparently.

  • Deborah Conway is the vocal, Tracy just lip syncched.

Wish I could watch this show again ... those were the days.

  • Ahh, high school days, ABC always did it best, anyone remember the series "Home" or the trucking life mini series "Maggie D" ?

  • I think I remember home. Did the theme go "Home, home, home is where the heart is?" - I can't for the life of me remember what it was about.

  • Yeah peemonster, that was the theme alright, started of a bit of a slow drawl, then sped up. Think it was about the life of a group of delinquent kids, some made good, some not. Very early 80's. Can't find anything on the net, maybe if I got of my ass and contacted the ABC archives section or something I could find out. Thanks

  • OMG i was just telling a friend about this an thought i would try to see if this song was on youtube and you had osted it, thanks so much for sharing

  • Where can I see this series again?

  • 1:21 - so *that's* where the Wiggles got their Big Red Car from!:-)

  • I still have the vinyl album from the series.

  • yes I still have my vinyl album too..... I loved this show

  • Copyright doesn't allow them to release it as it was commissioned as for original broadcast only :( Its a shame because most people from my generation who lived in Australia and NZ would remember and love this show. I'd certainly buy it if they released it on DVD.

  • What ever happened to Sandra Lillingston ??

  • I agree with you on that!!! they release everything else

  • They haven't realeased Australia You're Standing In It or Dancing Daze

  • Interesting, I knew the actors weren't actually singing, but I didn't know it was Deborah Conway who sang, always wondered who it was........

  • Same here

  • Deb sang vocals for Tracy Mann's character, Cathy McQuade of Deckchairs Overboard did the vocals for Sandie Lillingston's character (also played bass on several tracks), and John Clifforth from Deckchairs sang David Reyne's parts.

  • I never missed an episode of this, even did this song in a cover band at the time, such great memories...I even wanted to live in a wharehouse like them too! ha.

  • Hilarious!

  • Wow this brings back memories.

I was only a kid when it aired but I recall an episode where the band was at the saltwater swimming pool in Shellharbour. The reason that stuck with me is because I used to go there all the time..

    Thanks for sharing

  • My deepest gratitude for this.. it's made me cry remembering back, gosh, 25 yrs ago!! Sandra (aka Sandie) was my best friend at High School in Adelaide. I recall she took up saxaphone lessons to be credible and was petrified of her first 'screen' kiss with Arky on S&S. We both moved and lost contact. She was totally into drama at school, extremely genuine and down to earth .. ahh the 80s!!

  • @horsepetcare I remember Sandra at High school She was always nice to me. PCEC Drama class was great with Clare old Jack. ths was an awakening time for me.

    Darren

  • The graphics in this show were so hot. Everyone in my animation class copied it, not to mention Tracy Manns hair

  • I loved this show :) I had a huge crush on the guy who played the Drummer :D

  • great to share my pain among these comments.... such a distant memory for me but golden memories all the same!! :(

  • hahahha, hi sandy L.. xxx

  • Oh my god I used to love this show.

  • I have this album on vinyl. Great song and I watched the show religously.

  • Yay - bring it back. I can't remember the show but I know I liked the music....when i was very young...

  • Thanks for posting on. I been looking for this song for a year. Thanks again. :)

  • Lol, you weren't the only one.

Sandy was her name, miss the 80's :(

  • What a blast from the past. This was one of our favorite family shows. BRING IT BACK ABC

  • Absolutely! I'd love to see this again!

I'd rather see ABC2 repeating old series like this than episodes of stuff we've seen earlier in the week on ABC1 as they are at the moment.

  • great 80's dance moves !

  • such a great show.

would LOVE the DVD but apparantly its tied up in legal shit

  • Me, I had a mega crush on Tracy Mann (the lead singer of The Takeaways - Carol) when this show was on. Sharon O'Neill composed this track, and actually recorded it for her 1987 album 'Danced In The Fire'. The track is called 'In Control'.

  • And, sorry to double-post, but I meant to add that it is actually Deborah Conway from the band Do-Re-Mi (and other bands & solo stuff) singing the version recorded for the TV show. Deborah sang over half the Takeaways hits, plus backing vocals on nearly all their 'hits'.

  • LoOL what a flash back

  • I was totally into this show and bought the album. It had snippets from the show in between a few tracks. Something about a chicken was one of them, if I recall correctly.

  • Yep, def not Sharon singin'!

    Long live DO RE MI

  • Sharon O'Neill wrote the song but its definitely Deborah Conway singing.

    From IMDB:

    "Sweet and Sour"

    Written by Sharon O'Neill

    Sung by Deborah Conway

    & a Sharon O'Neill fan site:

She became involved with the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and provided some songs for the television series "Sweet and Sour" in 1983 and 1984. The songs "Sweet and Sour" and "Glam To Wham", from the series, were released by a group called the Takeaways, with vocals by Deborah Conway.

  • sour video

  • David Reyne thinks he's Billy Idol - how embarrassment!

  • Wern't they the best years, id do it all over again if I had the chance.

  • I remember this on ABC-TV, but did the actors actually sing at all or were they just miming to the actual band???

  • They mimed.

  • yeah i was in primary school...

  • David is very underused in this video, because he's got a great sense of humour.

"Sit here, and as the camera goes past, slide your glasses down and give us *the look*" hrmmm.

Still, it's a great song just the same.

  • David Reyne -Torchwood!

I have this song on an album -vinyl! How old does this make me????!!!!

  • what is the name of that album ?.

    I realy want this song

  • David Reyne

  • David

  • Now this takes me back to school days in sunny Canberra with my friends and I singing Takeaway songs on the sports field in our leg warmers and ra ra skirts!

  • I wish the ABC would release the full series on DVD. (I'd buy it!)

  • Much appreciated from a homesick Aussie stuck here in Arizona. Loved this show!

  • OMG!! I haven't seen Sweet & Sour since about 1984 when I was 9! We used to discuss the previous nights episodes at school. I wish I still had my albums. Does anyone have "The Image of An Angel"? That was my favourite song of all. God, I feel old now.

  • didnt know that thank you for that

  • bring it back on air

  • Maybe they are saving it for ABC3 (a dedicated kids channel) next year?

  • Wow takes me back. I had a flash of Sweet and sour in my memory and had to look it up. Whats with the flipping girl, that is freakin hilarious!

  • I always thought it sounded too much like Deb Conway.

  • Absolutely brilliant stuff from a better time, to which I'd go back to immediately if I could. Tracey Mann could "bop" with the best of them.

  • Everything has a time and a place... but some things should never be taken from teen culture, even if that culture is in their mid to late 30's by now. A dvd release would be nice! but a complete re-run would be better.

Its nice to know that so many others feel the same

  • or early 40's

  • Or early 40's indeed. In fact, if I can recall... my mother used to enjoy watching it with me, and she is in her late 60's now

  • I used to watch ever episode - better than crap ol' Neighbours! I still remember the manager!

  • ha, the takeaways,obviously..world stardom was not priority 1 for their manager back then.

  • Come on ABC

    release this on DVD

  • Wow, what a flashback. Didn't realise it was Deborah Conway singing. Great post.

  • I have this on vinyl somewhere. I'll have to get into my parents attic and dig it out. What a great memory. (And I still love Deb Conway, BTW)

  • it's very now ;)

  • Brings back memories from when I was really young, like 8-9 years old....If anyone has the track could you share it? I can't find it anywhere else on the internet

  • Amazing how much hand drawn animation featured in 80's clips.

  • Thanks for posting this great clip from the 80's.

I always looked forward to watching the show after school. I've still got both albums in my lp collection. Graham "Buzz" Bidstrup was also in GANGgajang, The Angels & The Party Boys. David Reyne is the Brother of Australian Crawl lead singer James Reyne. Jane Clifton also released a hit in 1984 "Girl on the Wall". Message me if anyone wants to get a copy of the soundtrack.

  • Yeeeess....being 15 was soooo coool back then.

  • From Wiki - The list of recording musicians includes Tommy Emmanuel, Chris Bailey, Graham Bidstrup, Eric McCusker (Mondo Rock), Red Symons (Skyhooks), Todd Hunter (Dragon) and Reg Mombassa (Mental As Anything). Actors in the show included Robin Copp, Ric Herbert, Sandra Lillington, Tracy Mann, Arky Michael, David Reyne, Megan Williams, Jane Clifton, Daniel Abineri.

  • You think they would cover up Tommy Emmanuel being involved.

  • Well they covered up Deb Conway doing the main vocals, she wasn't credited as far as I know. It was surprising to find out the musos who worked on this after so many years.

    Cam

  • Graham Bidstrup = was in band "Gangajang" -Sounds of Then (This is Australia)

  • feels like only yesterday that i watched this show. Has anyone got mp3 of song? Really want it on ipod

  • Seeing this clip again has made my day! I never missed this show.

I hope someone gets busy & releases the DVDs soon!!!

  • ha ha ... I remember those days Dr DMC

  • wow, I remember this series! And I still have the cassettes of the music. Thanks for uploading it.

  • HA ha ha ha!!!

Thanx SOOO much for posting this!!

    (waiting for DVD series release)
