Just got the CD, and the songs are even better than I remembered. Hearing them in full CD quality really brings them to life. It's still hard to believe the quality of the contributors that Tim and Johanna solicited, and the quality of the songs they submitted, when they could have just used them for their own bands with much greater credit and probably financial reward.
lol Swwet and sour, then bj mckay, muppets, dr who, then monky magic lol that was the order i watched them after i ran home from school everynight hahaha back when i was a lad
@epicshowhorsesnz This is actually the video made within the show's story. Since it was meant to be low budget in the story, and the band was struggling, it wouldn't be too realistic to have a lavish sophisticated video (which certainly did exist in 1984.)
Yeah peemonster, that was the theme alright, started of a bit of a slow drawl, then sped up. Think it was about the life of a group of delinquent kids, some made good, some not. Very early 80's. Can't find anything on the net, maybe if I got of my ass and contacted the ABC archives section or something I could find out. Thanks
Copyright doesn't allow them to release it as it was commissioned as for original broadcast only :( Its a shame because most people from my generation who lived in Australia and NZ would remember and love this show. I'd certainly buy it if they released it on DVD.
Deb sang vocals for Tracy Mann's character, Cathy McQuade of Deckchairs Overboard did the vocals for Sandie Lillingston's character (also played bass on several tracks), and John Clifforth from Deckchairs sang David Reyne's parts.
I never missed an episode of this, even did this song in a cover band at the time, such great memories...I even wanted to live in a wharehouse like them too! ha.
I was only a kid when it aired but I recall an episode where the band was at the saltwater swimming pool in Shellharbour. The reason that stuck with me is because I used to go there all the time..
My deepest gratitude for this.. it's made me cry remembering back, gosh, 25 yrs ago!! Sandra (aka Sandie) was my best friend at High School in Adelaide. I recall she took up saxaphone lessons to be credible and was petrified of her first 'screen' kiss with Arky on S&S. We both moved and lost contact. She was totally into drama at school, extremely genuine and down to earth .. ahh the 80s!!
@horsepetcare I remember Sandra at High school She was always nice to me. PCEC Drama class was great with Clare old Jack. ths was an awakening time for me.
Me, I had a mega crush on Tracy Mann (the lead singer of The Takeaways - Carol) when this show was on. Sharon O'Neill composed this track, and actually recorded it for her 1987 album 'Danced In The Fire'. The track is called 'In Control'.
And, sorry to double-post, but I meant to add that it is actually Deborah Conway from the band Do-Re-Mi (and other bands & solo stuff) singing the version recorded for the TV show. Deborah sang over half the Takeaways hits, plus backing vocals on nearly all their 'hits'.
I was totally into this show and bought the album. It had snippets from the show in between a few tracks. Something about a chicken was one of them, if I recall correctly.
Sharon O'Neill wrote the song but its definitely Deborah Conway singing.
From IMDB:
"Sweet and Sour"
Written by Sharon O'Neill
Sung by Deborah Conway
& a Sharon O'Neill fan site:
She became involved with the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and provided some songs for the television series "Sweet and Sour" in 1983 and 1984. The songs "Sweet and Sour" and "Glam To Wham", from the series, were released by a group called the Takeaways, with vocals by Deborah Conway.
Now this takes me back to school days in sunny Canberra with my friends and I singing Takeaway songs on the sports field in our leg warmers and ra ra skirts!
OMG!! I haven't seen Sweet & Sour since about 1984 when I was 9! We used to discuss the previous nights episodes at school. I wish I still had my albums. Does anyone have "The Image of An Angel"? That was my favourite song of all. God, I feel old now.
Everything has a time and a place... but some things should never be taken from teen culture, even if that culture is in their mid to late 30's by now. A dvd release would be nice! but a complete re-run would be better.
Its nice to know that so many others feel the same
Brings back memories from when I was really young, like 8-9 years old....If anyone has the track could you share it? I can't find it anywhere else on the internet
I always looked forward to watching the show after school. I've still got both albums in my lp collection. Graham "Buzz" Bidstrup was also in GANGgajang, The Angels & The Party Boys. David Reyne is the Brother of Australian Crawl lead singer James Reyne. Jane Clifton also released a hit in 1984 "Girl on the Wall". Message me if anyone wants to get a copy of the soundtrack.
From Wiki - The list of recording musicians includes Tommy Emmanuel, Chris Bailey, Graham Bidstrup, Eric McCusker (Mondo Rock), Red Symons (Skyhooks), Todd Hunter (Dragon) and Reg Mombassa (Mental As Anything). Actors in the show included Robin Copp, Ric Herbert, Sandra Lillington, Tracy Mann, Arky Michael, David Reyne, Megan Williams, Jane Clifton, Daniel Abineri.
Well they covered up Deb Conway doing the main vocals, she wasn't credited as far as I know. It was surprising to find out the musos who worked on this after so many years.
Loved the show , fired my imagination and probably wouldn't have taken up music without things like sweet and sour being on at that age.
