guys guys guys.. penny was one of the best players in nba besides mj when they were both in the league, everyone was saying that he was gona be the next jordan, and for all the haters out there who hates on penny, i duno what to tell u, except- stop bein a hater, lol and if penny was still healthy, he wudve def, won a championship. plus MVP. and one more thing for u haters out there, penny literally crosses over players, dunks on players face. not alot of nba players do that these days.
It's true - sometimes certain injuries happen to players & they are just never the same again. I bet if the same thing ever happened to MJ, Magic, or Bird - they would have gone downhill like Penny did. Hopefully a playoff-bound team will pick up Penny as a final piece to their puzzle - I still think the guy deserves one last chance at basketball -
Penny and Steve Francis are a slap in the face to guys who had long great careers, like Michael Jordan, Reggie Miller, Karl Malone, etc. These are guys that went out of the NBA on top of their games, and they were like 40 years old. Penny and Francis careers were on the downhill before they even reached 30, pitiful!
Nobody here is denying Penny whether or not Penny was or wasn't nasty at one time, because he was. The point is he should have lasted much longer than he did because he went downhill when he was in his late 20's and early 30's, and it's a shame because he should've taken better care of himself.
unfortunatly taking better care of himself wouldnt have helped in pennys case. hardaways bad knee was genetic which is why his grandmother wouldnt let him play football, hence he switched to basketball. penny has had 4 knee surgeries and with his explosive style of play, it was sort of doomed from the beginning.
also take into account some other young players with SIMILAR styles of play who
never regained their old form: jamal mashburn, terrell brandon, and antonio mcdyess all never recovered from the surgery. along with those payers brian grant, c-webb, allan houston, and kenyon martin all had the surgery and never regained form.
my point being explosive style of play and microfracture knee surgery are like oil and water, they dont mix.and let me add that it makes me sick that you'd call penny a "slap in the face to guys that had long careers" and "pitiful" which is why ive so vehemently rebutted your comment.
on a 1996 telecast of NBA on NBC michael jordan said that Hardaway was the player he felt most comfortable passing the "torch of greatness" down to. if u want to argue with me thats one thing but you cant argue with the greatest ever.
thanks for posting this awesome penny video, brings old memories back like card collecting. penny is my favorite all time, though i dont play like him. (-:
It could have been a dynasty with Penny and Shaq. Damn that Nick Anderson and his 4 missed freethrows in a row in the 1st game of the finals. They were such a young team that when they lost that game, in that fashion it was over for them. Although Penny did get pumpfaked by Kenny Smith to send the game into OT. I blame Anderson.
dwayne wade cant even be mention in the same cataroige as penny penny could shoot the 3 unlike wade the only guy in the NBA who can dunk block shots shoot pass and steal like penny is lebron
The NBA today is all about who can dunk the best, or who can do the sweetest cross-over, and who's the flashiest. Its not like what it used to be back then. you have some guys that play for the love of the game and play the way they play to help the team, but there's too many of what I call "crowd pleasers." You don't have to be pretty to be productive. Just ask Tim Duncan.
grant hill and penny were never team mates ozma23 he went to the suns 2 years prior. Penny is the best guard behind Jordan to play the game how its supposed to be played. In his prime nobody could stop him,he was to smart of a player plus he played D unlike the Lebrons and Melos
no one could out done what penny had done in the league all those miracle shots from tha back court all those no look passes all those flashy slash to the hoop thats all penny. i just wish he could bring his game back and make it back to the all star game. grant hill made it why can't he?
nice vid...i really hope he can come back...what i miss about him is that he can be a role player..he will not demand for the spotlight, but he can get the job done...
I wish the Lakers would have gotten Penny instead of Shammond Williams, I don't care if he's not as explosive as before but a role player that can be consistant when he needs to be, i think he deseserves a shot, before he didn't let himself heal, but i think he can redeeem himself now.
He was Dwayne Wade before Dwayne Wade existed, I really do wish he can come back and be a 15-16 PPG guy, would have been a hall of famer if he didn't get injured.
At 1:42 Penny's really fast on that play.
