I appreciate the irony of watching this from an iBook identical to the one shown in the vid, save for the upgrade of course, now to go find me a 1 GB chip
i have two questions: 1. when you take out the old memory chip and put in the new one, doesnt it lose the old memory making it 1 gb not 1.5 gb? or is the additional .5 built into the system? 2. do you have to get a specific brand or type of memory chip.
This is really strange. My iBook G$ 12" 1.33Mhz 2005 model does not have a airport extreme card when i lift up the keyboard and take off the cover, yet the iBook still has WiFi and Bluetooth. Can anyone help?
I have a ibook g4 with 1 gb ram and 1.33 mhz want to know if I can change the ram and all that serious and not any of this because they are very slow and youtube videos I can do to fix it
After i installed my chip i went to the "About Mac" to check the memory. It still says "256mb" but now its followed by "MB DDR SDRAM". does it take a while for the extra memory to register with the computer?
@macunwired Will it work if I put memory in my g4 that is from a ibook g3 "blue berry"? The memory in my g4 is 512 built in and the one i want to add is 192mb.Will it work?
What does RAM actually do? Make stuff run faster? My iBook is getting pretty slow. I do regular maintenance with Onyx and it's at 56GB used and 18GB remaining. Does the storage affect speed? I processor is only 1.2ghz.
RAM, or Random Access Memory, works as an ultra fast storage medium for files you are currently using. So if you open up a picture for instance, you computer loads the picture into RAM instead of reading it off your slow Hard Drive. Your computer will also load the program you are using to view and edit the picture into RAM.
If your computer runs out of RAM (say you have a couple programs and files open), then it has to use your slow Hard Drive for accessing the files.
You can only put a 1GB chip into the computer... but there is either 128, 256, or 512 built into the motherboard of the computer. So when you put the 1GB chip in, you will have either 1.12GB, 1.25GB, or 1.5GB total.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!! do you have to replace the old memory card or is there somewhere to add an additional card? i have an ibook g4 with 256mb of ram. I just purchased a 1 gb of ram. do i have to REPLACE the 256 card or is there an option to just add the additional 1gb. will i lose anything on my computer? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!
Chances are your computer has 256MB built in... so there shouldn't be anything to replace. If you do have to pull a chip out, you do have to replace it... there is only one slot in the iBooks.
The Memory does not hold any data... it is only used when the computer is on. Your Hard Drive holds all the data on your computer... so you don't have to back anything up or anything like that when replacing memory!
Bravo! At first I thought I'd choke without voice or text instructions, but this was SO thorough. Thank you, from an online instructor who probably uses too many words for my students (it's obvious by now). THANKS!
i have an ibook g4 with 256mb Ram, i want to upgrade, so i need to know what kind of memory i need, ddr, ddr2 , pc2100, pc100 etc. i don´t know ¿? can you help me ? thanks
This upgrade will not require any files to me moved or anything... if you ever replace your HD, you will need to backup your files... memory just stores information when your computer is on, as soon as you turn it off, all the stuff in your memory is cleared.
Wow thanks, this is the best video on replacing RAM I've seen, i was too scared to try it before in case i couldn't put it back together but this video makes it easy thank you so much!
wha if i put a 2gb ram in there? what will happen?

@TheMagicHat100 don't worry. it's there. your ibook 's air port card is buried inside. you have to take the machine apart to see it. .. and fix it.

So the "fastest" RAM speed this machine can be upgraded to would be 1.5 gig?
BaronMorte 2 years ago
Yes... depending on the machine after you add a 1GB chip you will have 1.12, 1.25, or 1.5GB of RAM.

@BaronMorte 1.5gb is the amount of ram, not the speed of the ram.

so the top memory chip can be replaced and the bottom on is non-removable?
theeasybeats 2 years ago
That is correct. The built in memory is literally soldered on the motherboard.

thank you that answers my problem

PC-2100 or PC-2700. 200 pin RAM. I have heard that PC-3200 works as well... but I haven't ever tested it.
Either 2100 or 2700 will work perfectly... the 2700 is backwards compatible.
macunwired 3 years ago
Hi, what does backwards compatible mean? I am going to replace the RAM in my G4 and was wondering what this means.
Cheers!

wait so u have 2 buy a new memory card? or all u do is take out and put back in the same memory card?
ziggytwizzla 3 years ago
In order to increase the Memory your computer has (RAM), you will need a new card that is bigger than your old one.
macunwired 3 years ago
were do u get a new 1?
