the engine isnt even blown up, it just got overheated to the piont where the coolant system pressure got so high that the coolant bottle (most likely) ruptured. Cars like this typically have cooling systems where there is no vent in them besides for a high pressure relief vent (which as in this case was not enough) nearly all american cars, and some cheap imports (like toyota) will be venting steam and coolant until the block drys up.
