Asombroso.
There's a brighter sound quality to the other recording here on Youtube of this aria with Jaroussky, but here he allows himself a little more room for ornamentation. Guess I'm favouriting both.
Have you noticed that when Philippe takes breath in the middle of a long note (f.ex. 0:54), the note doesn't seem to interrupt but to sound on? (This is maybe still more so in "Cum dederit"). Must be the magic of his voice...
The aria seems to have been transposed from b minor to a minor - a change I'm not to fond of, actually. B minor in my opinion is a much sweeter for an aria of such dolorousness as this.
Still, Jaroussky does a very splendid job performing this aria, as he always does. Bravo!
You are right on transposition. My experience tells, they do it for this aria. (Even in the Heroes CD.) As the range of this aria is medium-high, probably, PJ tries to reduce the number of his passing notes on B and C.
@artisLV Also keep in mind that this is written in the baroque. Nowadays the common A is 440Hz. Back than it was 415 Hz. So if it says B minor it was actualy in Bb minor. (415 isn't a proper G# btw)
simply beautiful and charming!Im in love with his voice! Not gonna show off my knowledge of opera because i don't have any:D but this voice brings tears to my eyes T_T
Normally I like listening to his fast coloratura pieces the best. But this one is SO exquisite, it just melts! HIs solidarity of line, and Lemieux's mastery of Vivaldi is unsurpassed.
Il Giustino has been already recorder by Alan Curtis in 2002 but, of course, after Spinosi it is very hard to listen to others. Even though some critics (ones who are used to English type of hymnatic Handel) accuse him for too agressive way of playing, Spinosi's Vivaldi is the most expressive one.
Since the original score of this opera is located at the Turin Library, there's no doubt that someone is going to record it as a part of Naïve's Vivaldi Edition, and hopefully it'll be Spinosi.
Spinosi has said that his next recording of La fida ninfa will be his last Vivaldi opera for Naive. In fact, score of Il Giustino has been published about 1978 for Vivaldi's 300th anniversary by Ricordi. Of course, it is overedited according to that time baroque standards and it is not quite suitable to nowdays performing requirements.

Probably because of going beyond the E5. The original goes to F#5. He seems to sing these type of songs in a very Mezzo range.

Thanks a lot for posting this, Philippe is great as always. I hope that Spinosi once will record Giustino, he's one of my favourite conductors.
