The first recording came in June 1952 by SUE THOMPSON for Mercury's country label, Wing (6407). Pee Wee King, brought it to Sue. Mercury execs sensed "'hit" and had Patti Page record a quick cover version as did Jo Stafford and Dean Martin for their respective labels. All three went to the top of the charts, with Stafford's regarded as the classic version. SUE eventually reached stardom with 1960s gold records Sad Movies,, Norman and Paper Tiger. SUE is very proud to have been first with YBTM.

Price wrote most of the song, and ceded equal credit to the other two in exchange for their work in promoting it....Redd rewrote some in order to change into a love song and not as much a war song as Chilton had envisioned.
