Yeah, sure, he's very spiritual singing this song, but have you seen him in that Columbo episode where he plays the evil commissioner who drowns his wife in the bathtub to get her inheritance? That's the REAL Kiley.
Please HELP! My Aunt just died and this was her all time fav! She named her dog Sancho, her cat Dulcinea, loved Impossible Dream, her home was all decorated as Don Quixote - plaque "La Casa de Hombre de LaMancha".
Anyways I am writing a bio/obit...Please explain what this meant "Soft and fair, my friends; in last year's nests there are no birds this year."
Normally whoever I first hear singing an iconic song is the voice I prefer; it's just how I 1st heard it and that's how it's stuck in my head. THIS is the exception. I've heard many DonQuixote's, b4 I finally heard Richard Kiley and *CLICK*. This is his role; he owns it. PERFECT~
I was fortunate enough to play Don Quixote years ago, and my best review referred to my" Kiley-like" rendering of "The Impossible Dream". It was the greatest compliment I ever received. It was his voice in this show that first inspired me to want to sing. Forty some years and hundreds of performances later, I am still grateful to him.
i heard this song first in a small theater in wisconsin, and well, this is a pure version, live was ... personal, like the tale of a mad errant knight could be important to a middle-low class kid with delusions of grandeur
My husband, my Mom and I saw Richard Kiley perform in Man of LaMancha in Boston I can't remember what year-sometime in the late 1970s. I have the program somewhere. His performance as Don Quiote was unbelievable. I consider myself blessed to have seen him perform. Thanks for posting this.
I can't listen to this without coming to tears. What a beautiful voice, if only I had been born earlier and been able to see and hear him live! Captivating and lovely!
This is the perfect version, gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. My mom loved Richard Kiley and I grew up listening to all the broadway musicals including Man of La Mancha, No Strings and Kismet. His voice was just beautiful. And a great actor, too. So glad he was in my fav miniseries of all time, The Thorn Birds. Thanks for sharing this!!
I saw Richard Kiley in "LaMancha" almost 35 years ago, when he toured in the play in the Washington D.C. area in the summer of 1977. In memory, it might as well have been yesterday. The effortless way he cast his spell over an adience, the way he made them believe the way that Cervantes' hero believed, was an experience almost beyond the power of words to convey. He brought the sort of authority to the part that only 1000+ performances, both on Broadway and on tour, can. Magic time.

The very best production of "Man of La Mancha" was the original. I saw it just after it opened. As the finale ended, there was total audience silence. I could see tear-drenched faces all around me, mirroring mine. Suddenly the applause exploded. Everyone jumped to their feet, clapping harder and harder. It went on and on and on, like an unquenchable tidal wave of love. No one could stop applauding. It was like joyous mass hysteria ... an experience unlike any other. Kiley beyond incredible!
Brian Stokes Mitchell, the man who introduced this clip, did a good job of the song in a revival of Man of La Mancha. It's to the right, "Brian Stokes Mitchell - 57th Tony Awards". I'm not saying he's as good as Kiley was. I'm just saying he does a good job with the song.

@MadameLadybugjf I saw him perform as Don Quixote in '78 here in Boston. He had suffered a broken arm after falling off the stage two weeks before when someone in the audience snapped a picture and blinded him. He came on stage and said that someone would be subbing for him during the fight scene and that we would get two Don Quixotes for the price of one. Great performance!
yuuuuuuuuuuus. that is all.

No one beats the original. Richard Kiley had a voice like a cannon and no one has done as well in the role since.

Great video! This allows many more to appreciate the performance of a lifetime and perhaps allow the words to permeate their being.

I'm so glad there is at least one clip of Richard Kiley performing all of "The Impossible Dream" even if its from a later time.
This has been one of my favorite songs ever since I first heard it when it was first performance when I was in junior high school.
