Great stag, .300m Ok. 10 members in my crew of deer stalkers using .300m, 30 06 and .270 and taken sambar, rusa, chital and fallow. Always fun around camp when a good stag is taken about which weapon is best. Enjoy backpack hunting in Victoria's high country!!!
hi m8 im new to the sport and i absolutly can not wait to get my first rifle out of the shop it is a tikka t3 hunter 308 is this sufficiant to take down the big buggers like this one also i was curious if you would show a segment on how to score your trophies and also hanging and butchering so as we can learn to do it successfuly cheers m8 hope to see more of your vidioes soon happy trails.Regards Charles
Hi Thrasher, mate you wont go far wrong with the T3! there are a lot of good rifles out there but personally I would go the T3 hands down as the best out of the box rifle available! check out the vdhm web site and will look at doing a butchering video and scoring video too! caping would be good too!!! good hunting
Im getting excited as we approach another season, something about winter, mountains and best air in the world. Oh did i forget Sambar, Fallow, Red,Hog deer all in reach of us or something different blue ribbon trout water! What a life.
No cant say I have! what calibre do you want to use them in and what for? deer? I usually go for something with a high ballistic coeficient and those look like they would be a low BC. Im trying the Nosler Accubonds now and not using the TTSX any more
I cant say that i have found much better than my trusty .270 featherweight (old style) pushing 150 grn game kings. I have pulled off some longer shots - 450 longest on a running spiker and no drama's. Shooting sub moa and happy as. I am looking at 7mm rem mag to go back to my old love - long range. Would love to crack 1000m kill shot this year comming. Ill post some footage soon.
I agree with you about table - you dont shoot a bull for the table. If you want meat 18 month old. Field hygyne and correct butchering changes the taste alot. Smoke some round - give that a try. Very good.
True even the choice cuts from the older stags can prove chewy! thanks for the heads up I usually take a younger animal for the freezer and someof the other species we have in Aus prove a bit nicer to eat
I this hunt written up in VDH this month? Awesome stuff. I do a lot of back pack and stalking in my Local area - East Gippy and i can really appreciate your trophy. Awesome GIVE EM HEAPS
yes mate it is the same stag from VDH mag! Ive been mooching around your area the past few years although this bloke was not taken there! the bugggas are well into NSW now and with the R license oportunities are opening up .... private land even better
we try to recover as much meat as possible. This can be hard when backpacking plus those old stag can be as tough as nails to chew on. Go for the choice cuts in these instances. Usually I like the eat the younger animals when it comes to sambar. They do taste good however can be tricky to cook. Cant go wrong with fallow too. Hanging the meat for 5-7 days tenderises it as well so would suggest doing that too. Good hunting mate
Thanks! I agree cant got wrong with the 300. In this instance bullet choice was bad with the TTSX. Take a look at the next issue of Victorian Deer Hunter Mag. Mt article is in there, plus another I did on glassing
