She had (has) a very weak singing voice. You dont need a nice voice to be a front person in a band, just as long as its strong and distinctive. She had neither. Saying that tho I do like this song, and got the album when it was released.
As much as I really like TOTP only a few bands played live. As I understand it the majority of bands had to pretend to play and the frontmen had to lipsink. Some bands in the 90's played live. But I cannot understand why some of you hate on bands because they are not as good live as on the cds. How many influential bands are guilty of not being as good in person as on the cds?
Where do you people get off by saying she can't sing?! Have you heard her in person? I have. The same is said about Ian Brown. I've got some bad news for some of you; They both can sing! If they really couldn't sing, they wouldn't have gotten as far as they did! Focus people!
i am...she can't sing live. sleeper were a brilliant band but they did well because of great songs and great producers, not because louise had a naturally great singing voice. same for the stone roses- great songs (although their debut is overrated) and amazing guitarist in squire. brown cannot sing. all he can do is look like an idiot, strut around like a prat and dream of still being in the stone roses when he could hide behind the talent of the rest of he band.
You could say the same thing about Liam Gallagher. IN person his voice isn't as good as on the cds. My point was that their voices are good enough. They are not the Greatest but to say they cannot sing is off base. Again, I have heard these band and frontmen (and women) live, they are good enough.
Oh and to say the Stone Roses debut cd 'The Stone Roses' is overrated makes me wonder if you have heard The Stone Roses in person. I was at Blackpool and Spikeisland; I am speaking from what I heard Them perform not what others have said of them that aren't old enough to have heard them live. That cd was the majority reason musically for the British 90's; not all but most of it.
I think most of the Britpop has beens are living in Brighton- I can tell you at least six of them living within half an hour of my flat! It's funny when I'm catching the bus to my office in the morning seeing the bass player of a certain mid ninties Britpop band getting in her rust white rover to go to work!
Could be, I've also seen Emma Anderson from lush going into her office in Kensington Street and Martin Rossiter from Gene in rock street when i'm coming home from work.
Sleeper Sleeper Blooper! At 2:37 the mike hits Louise Wener in the mouth. The mike stand almost gets knocked down because the crowd gets so excited. Louise is surprised but handles the impact like a heavyweight champ.

I agree on all counts. Ropey vocals aside though, this is a good tune. Also - everyone sounded like this on The Word.

I'm sorry but this chick can not sing. I just don't get what the fuss is.

Great song... rubbish performance (unless your video is sticking!).

I was there when this was recorded, and it was my first glimpse of Louise in the flesh, and she looked a bit cold...
Just wish this video was higher quality and then I might be able to spot myself!!

Funnily enough I spent Millenium New Year's Eve at some party in London and Sleeper's bassist was there.
Some dickhead gave him a load of grief about his band's back catalogue, bassist took it with far more dignity than most people would

Fabulous song, with more hooks than a fishmongers. though i wonder why she always sounded like she was keeping the hiccups at bay when she sang live?
