i agree with you 200%-i've never understood why it was considered so "indulgent" by audiences & critics-the only thing i thought might have hurt it(?) with critics is Elaine May's bitter split with Mike Nichols right before-were they overly critical of her writing because of her rants about him? i still find it hilarious & pitch perfect;but once you're 'blackballed' in film,it's very hard to come back.maybe that hurt it as well as the huge budget overages. to hell with all that! Bravo ISHTAR!

There are parts to this movie that are pure genius. There are some dry spots however which the critics love to shove in your face if you mention the show as being good.

Overall, very worth the slow bits. A must see on a sunday afternoon.

without a doubt a movie that was sabotaged by "critics" and it's own studio...what a shame. It really is absolutely beyond hysterical.... I can't imagine how Beatty & Hoffman managed to keep straight faces.... I feel so sorry for Elaine May...can you imagine writing this comic masterpiece and having it "panned" by a bunch of morons!!!
