BBC does period pieces so well! This movie is wonderful. I also suggest "North and South" to those who have not seen it. It's on Netflix but it can probably be found somewhere on the internet for free.
I mean it's like you can't even get American shows made in 2003 that would have that 'goodness' and that 'naturality' in filming. Which probably institutes for why it took me so long to finish watching this because I had to keep pressing the replay button over and over again! Needless to say, this is probably the only tv series I've ever watched that made me cry like.. a million times because some parts were just that sad and touching! Overall 10+ out of 10.
I watched the entire series and have to say this is one of the BEST television series I have ever seen in my entire life. When I watched this show I didn't enjoy just one part, I enjoyed every single fragment of it. I mean you're talking best character roles, great storyline flow, and needless to say PRICELESS acting. I mean for a show made in 2008, you have to admit (if you watched it) the acting is pretty damn good!
Well, I don't know about "Mr. Darcy", he's okay, but I loved the show. However, I think "Lark Rise to Candleford" is just as good. The entire show (start to finish) is on YouTube @ xLarkRiseCandleford's channel. watch?v=0doKZFNWZXE is the first episode but you can create a playlist and watch all of the seasons. :-)
I watched this... fell so in love with it that I bought, and I NEVER buy movies! Seriously, the only bad thing about this is that it is SO good I don't know if I could ever really appreciate another period drama half as much!
So we have a really pretty leading female, Mr Darcy, Head Girl from Wild Child, Ron Weasley's Dad and Martha from Doctor Who... MmmMM!! Looking FINE <3
@07RockerGirl If one were to tell you the story, they'd be out of word count before they finished the opening scenes. Dickens intertwines so many complex characters and plots that it's nearly impossible to sum it all up. I highly suggest you watch it though, it's a masterpiece of a film!
@therubysinger haha no of course not! I mean stephen fry is a sexy beast anyway, but yeah you have to love mathew, he's brilliant, and he was made for this role!
i think his hair in this series makes a little bit older, in P&P he's supposed to be 28 so this hair won' make him 28, even thought it's makes him HOTTER , I LOVE HIM <3
@luna4ever36 I bought the box set online from Asda - was less than half price. Highly recommended adaptation, I love this story and the cast are excellent.
does it have a satysfiying ending? oh dear i soo want to watch (no duhh it does have Mr Darcy in it (Matthew MacFadeyn) but...oohh i hope it has a happy ending...some says it;s depressing ... how so?
@Larii2cute4u Yes, it has a wonderful ending. It was rather dark in places, but it also had some wonderfully funny and interesting characters. Definitely well-worth watching. :^)
@Larii2cute4u Read it. Find out! I think Mr Dickens would be a bit pissed off if he knew that 140 years after he hit the dirt, people no longer read his novels but simply asked everyone else what happends in the end. £3 Asda, not much to pay. 1/47th of a licence fee.
@NoctisEreptor I suppose he would be, but just asking if it's worth the watch...so many books so little time, so many movies..almost adequate time :) get it? I rather watch the movie then read the book because if you read the book you most often get dissapointed with the movie..but if u're pleased with the movie, you can't wait to read the book.
Love these adaptations, but, the actors are too well fed. Much more effort in makeup needed to show almost every one not well off as thin. Also BBC's need to put black artistes into roles where they dont belong. Black people were rare enough in Dickens britain that he would mention the fact.
BBC distorting history and and the works of Dickens for political correctness
You are probably right about the actors being too well fed for the early 19th century! But see the report, "Airbrushed out of history: How Victorian Britain portrayed its black community", by Ian Herbert in The Independent who says that, "recent studies have shown that in cities such as Liverpool, London and Edinburgh, black residents were fairly common". However, I take your point that Dickens would have mentioned this fact if he had intended it. But these are quibbles with a superb series.
@katrinalindley I'm still going with this, but now I've only got 111 pages to go! Can't believe I've been at it for 10 months, but I'm looking forward to being able to rewatch it! :D
Judy Parfitt's Mrs. Clennan rivals her outstanding performance as Vera Donovan in Dolores Claiborne. (Particularly the last episode of the series.) How this extremely talented and skilled artiste hasn't garnered more "official" recognition at the emmys, oscars or baftas is absolutely bafta-ling, I mean, baffling! Brava, Ms. Parfitt!!!
0:16. I couldnt believe that was Eve Myles as Maggy. She was totally brilliant in this!!!! So different to the guns-blazing, alien fighting heroine we see in Torchwood.
I just saw it yesterday, and I don`t understand what is it with the black girl, Tattycoram I think. she found the box in the end and gave it to Clennam. And? I mean Why she was importent? i can`t place her in the story. I thought she`s going to be the dead Mr. Clennam`s secret daughter or something, but no. and miss Wade? Who`s daughter is she? And why is it important that she loved the painter? (sorry for my english) (oh, maybe that`s why i didn`t understand perfectly)
The story is very much about different humans reactions and feelings to each other. While she may not have been that important to the story line, her own individual story was still equally interesting and engaging, with her temper leading her to make mistakes. I think Dickens was trying to say something about different personalities interacting.
Can anyone help explain the ending of Little Dorrit? I was pretty confused by the inheritance issue. I thought Mrs. Clennam was hiding the fact that all this money had been left to Amy, and it's revealed in the end, but Amy tells Arthur that she's broke...I know that her family has lost their fortune, but doesn't she still have her will money?
In the book, Arthur's not told of his past or the will. He refuses to take Amy as his wife--and only lets her visit him while in prison--because she is (at the time) rich and he's a debtor. When Doyce says he has enough money to pay off the debts and free Arthur, Arthur tells Amy they must now part for good. By then Amy has nothing but the money promissed in the will. She tells Aurther she is poor in hopes of getting him back. Then she has him burn the will--without telling him what it is.
This is the BEST masterpiece classic I have ever seen!!! It is definitley my new favorite! I bought the movie and the book as soon as the movie finished. This masterpiece is utterly SUPERB!
i just finished watching it in the states and i loved it. i wish i had it on dvd. (i'd watch the early one and even the very late same one the same day)
I finished watching it a couple weeks ago also. It was on the website, they only keep it up for a week. I felt saddened when it was time for them to take it down. It was truly the best masterpiece i've watched, even though I just started watching it this year. But i know no other will move me as much! I felt that i grew up with each character. Such great meaning behind it all!
Let me say...THIS IS LIKE THE BEST MASTERPIECE CLASSIC I'VE EVER SEEN! It's TOTALLY my new fav! When I watched this whole thing I was completely and utterly hooked! I couldn't stop! :)
This coming Sunday night is the final episode (PBS in States) I truly hate to see it end, I've grown very fond of this exceptional cast ..All I can say is if the world had more Amy Dorrits and Arthur C's in it, this would be a far, far better place. My heartfelt thanks to Claire Foy and Matt Macfadyen for giving us moments we'll NEVER forget..
This version is much more complete than the 1988 movie and is wonderfully done with complementary music. First class. The 1988 must also be seen for the development of Amy through her childhood and how she became the mother of the family. Flora, Pancks excel as do Joan Greenwood and Alec Guinness. Both are musts.
Little Dorritt is not to be missed . As for the present production, the WHOLE CAST is top-notch. So many scenes are indelible, but for me, I'll simply never forget when Amy Dorritt had to gently tell John Chivery (the jailor's son)she could not return his love. This was such a sad scene...almost painful to watch, it was so powerful to me. Claire Foy acted this moment w/ 100% grace and compassion. Pure Dickens. I thoroughly believe this is Emmy material...
i just finished watching the series a few days ago
i'm so in love with matthew macfadyen and his voice.. it has so much depth to it and his face is so expressive. he has gotten a little chubs since P&P but it's cute :)
claire foy was excellent, as well as the rest of the cast *thumbs up*
I've been watching this series on PBS and it's really a very impressive production, they paid a lot of attention to detail and really got it right, the acting is superb, overall it carries it off brilliantly, it's very easy to imagine being stuck in that horrid time.
The movie so far is great and getting better!! I love Matthew's character he is so generous & endearing with good heart!! Plus he is soooo ATTRACTIVE & I just want to melt hearing his voice!!
I love these Masterpieces. They have the best actors. With the exception of the girl playing Mimi. What the hell is wrong with her mouth? I cannot stand to look at her.
excellant show here....Judy Parfit is great!!!!.....and yes M.M. is so easy on the eyes.....do not remember any lesbianism though......book is still the best
Little Dorrit is wonderful! Amazing cast....Matthew Macfadyen, Claire Foy, Andy Serkis, Russell Tovey and on and on!! Counting the days till the 29th!!
does anyone know where i can watch full episodes on the internet? for some reason no link is working for me. saying that it has been removed and can no longer be viewed or something....
This is a very good production, but there was an excellent film version of Little Dorrit with Derek Jacobi which you really ought to see as well.
Charles Dickens has always been my favourite author. His books almost always leave me with warm feelings and optimism. I get the feeling that he really liked people. He was a very romantic man, and certainly liked women - I mean, really liked them.
Yes, it was, I saw it last night, I was totally absorbed in it. It was very dramatic, I hadn't known the story, literally the Fall of the House of Clenham! Fabulous. Did old Flintwinch survive? The actress who played Little Dorrit was so convincing in her anglelic portrayal. But then all the actors were wonderful, especially Tom Courtenay in what I believe was the role of his life. Despite what some critics said, I thought that this production was superb. I now look forward to Big Dorrit! lol
Arthur is not related to Amy- he was adopted at Birth by Mrs Clenham and bought up as her own child.
An excellent adaption- the BBC are very good at bringing Dickens characters to life. In fact I now answer the phone at home to cold callers as Jeremia Flintwich!!!!
Christabelle is right- The track that accompanies this advert is by Paul Leonard-Morgan, and is called "Sienna", available to buy on itunes and from the website for his album, Filmtales.
i love love love love love love love love this tv production, one of my favourite bbv productions

This coming Sunday night is the final episode (PBS in States) I truly hate to see it end, I've grown very fond of this exceptional cast ..All I can say is if the world had more Amy Dorrits and Arthur C's in it, this would be a far, far better place. My heartfelt thanks to Claire Foy and Matt Macfadyen for giving us moments we'll NEVER forget..
absolutely beautiful:)

Does anyone know what the piano piece is called that plays during the opening credits of "Little Dorrit?"

I am searching for this also. I will let you know should I find it.

I've been watching this series on PBS and it's really a very impressive production, they paid a lot of attention to detail and really got it right, the acting is superb, overall it carries it off brilliantly, it's very easy to imagine being stuck in that horrid time.

I love these Masterpieces. They have the best actors. With the exception of the girl playing Mimi. What the hell is wrong with her mouth? I cannot stand to look at her.

Incredibly well done series. Although Dickens was a masterful writer, I don't like the way he portrayed heroines as self-sacrificing wimps.

Dombey and Son is good as well.

I now look forward to Big Dorrit! lol
theprophet20 3 years ago 5
Hehe, yeah i couldnt help myself with that one :)
But in all seriousness it is a very good adaptation. The BBC hasnt lost the touch!
BVargas78 3 years ago 3
Yes it seems Flintwinch did survive, he raised
himself from the rubble of the collapsed house
with "blimey!"....
what i am not clear about is , " how is Arthur related to the Clenhams ?"
i mean surely him and Amy dont share the same father ?
And you are right, Tom Courtenay was amazing,
what a transformation from his "loneliness of
a long distance runner" role !
jpandyaraja 3 years ago
Arthur is not related to Amy- he was adopted at Birth by Mrs Clenham and bought up as her own child.
An excellent adaption- the BBC are very good at bringing Dickens characters to life. In fact I now answer the phone at home to cold callers as Jeremia Flintwich!!!!
snhead 3 years ago
thanks for clearing that one up, i hope
we can have more of dickens for xmas !Flintwich !
