  • thanks for posting-sometimes these moments are very rare tv archives-worth it to post ,no matter what condition-we all thank you for trying your best--its not the post as much as the attempt to remember eleanor powell in this rare appearance-the audience stood up-that means a lot of respect for her she was later the discarded ,forgotten lady at mgm-they thought her time was up-but she was a heck of a dancer--thanx again

  • next time get a real film if you do this don't film from the camera pointed a the tv go to the F...ing show and film will you!!!

  • I'm watching the Broadway Melody of 1940 as I type this and I am getting goosebumps watching these unbelievable people and listening to this speech...I luv it!!!

  • Elegant!

  • Sorry to be the Simon Cowell here, but could the quality of the video be even worse?

If you want to actually watch it, there's a much clearer, cleaner version posted in the list along the right hand side.

  • @dannybex Look if you don't want to watch this version, don't watch it, I havent been able to afford the proper equipment to upload it properly, this version came from an already muddy video tape, I am the first to upload this on Youtube and it's thanks to me and my page that people even still know about Eleanor Powell.

    Cheers.

    Gabriel Antinous

  • @Shurayuki18481 Hey Gabriel, I understand. I didn't mean to be rude, but I suppose it came off that way. Believe me, I didn't watch too much of your version because I couldn't. It's too 'muddy' as you say. I'm sure many people appreciate your posting it, but you have to admit that there are many posts featuring Powell, along with the much, much clearer version of this speech, posted by JudithIN410.

  • @dannybex Yes Judith did inform me before posting her quality version online which I was completely fine with.

  • @dannybex You must be a child, Can you not tell the difference between digital recording and analog tape recording in front off a CRT TV. More than likely over the air.

  • Such a gifted and beautiful woman inside and out. We have been truly blessed by her presence. God bless you Eleanor!!!!!

  • She is the baaaadasssest ass dancer EVER -- tapped your ass of sistah gurl!

  • 1oo8jm, you're absolutely right!

  • God Bless!

  • I love her smile. :-)

  • I agree with everyone that has said something outstanding about this wonderful woman. Its all true, A LADY in youth and TRUE LADY in later years. Her and Fred where CLASS ACT and we will never ever see the likes again of talent like that. Thank God for film.

  • Aww, that was so sweet! Thank you for posting!

  • True Giants of an age never to be seen again. Now it is all politics, sex and recovery programs. Fred and Ellie did it with NO special effects, NO cussing or swearing and NO agenda. Two actors who were perfectionists and worked hard to get there. Good-bye Mr. Astaire and Ms. Powell, we all miss you and need you more now then ever!

  • Thank you so much for making this available to all of us Powell fans! She should have gotten some sort of lifetime award herself or at least something from MGM. A truly spiritual and beautiful woman.

  • Great! Thanks!!!

  • Truly wonderful and what a lady......thank you for sharing this memorable moment and allowing others to see why "Ellie" was and continues to be so beloved by so many.

  • They should have given Ellie a life time acheivement award. As Fred said in his autobiography " She put em down like a man. No ricky ticky stuff with Ellie. She danced in a class by herself man or woman." She saved MGM from bankruptcy twice. Her Broadway Rhythm movies of 1936 and 1938(see Broadway Melody) made them millions and averted diaster. Without her, Gone With the Wind and The Wizard OF OZ would never had existed as we know them today. Most of Her fellow peers considered her the best.

  • I graduated high school back in 81. Eleanor Powell will forever to me be the finest lady dancer. She made it look completely carefree and effortless and you never saw her fight for breath. She had a smile that could light the world. She was not only beautiful outside but gorgeous inside. And in this video, she looks positively stunning. My favourite dance is from Lady Be Good when she danced with the Jack Russel Terrier.

  • @Diane12163 As far as I can tell- and I've watch all those movies from that fabulous era- the only two who could dance in Eleanor's leagues were Astaire and Kelly.

  • She was a class act to the end, thanks for putting up this clip

  • Wonderful and charming speech,

    a truly classy lady.

  • Thanks for posting this, Shurayuki. I've watched it many times. I'm sure I watched it back in 81 - wouldn't have missed it then. Am soooo happy she got the ovation; so deserved and overdue. All the clips on YouTube have allowed me to really appreciate the scope of her talent. So wonderful that she can continue to inspire us. What role model on AND off screen!

  • A really magnificent lady and charming personality.

  • I have looked for this clip for years...I'm so happy I got to see it. She was wonderful.

    Many Thanks!

  • Your welcome :)

  • OMG what a fantastic clip... thanks!!

  • Aww this brought a little tear to my eye!

  • 1981 hard to believe that was 27 years ago.

  • Yes, I got teary. :) What a lady. "..Work so hard to make it look easy", indeed. I'm glad they gave her the standing "O", as she deserved.

  • She was dying of cancer when she honored Fredand was not with us within a year. He was intimidated by her and thought her to be the better dancer. Of the other 27 he danced with he knew he was the better dancer. Both were remarkable talents.

  • fantastic , thanks !

do you've got the whole ceremony?

  • No this is the only part of the ceremony I have sorry, though there are a few clips from other YouTubers.

  • There are other clips from this show on YouTube right now in much higher quality - surely someone can post this great speech (and the one by Audrey Hepburn) in better quality - please! (But many thanks to Shurayuki for posting this one, too!)

  • This clip is so Great !!! I cannot stop watching it. Thanks So Much for posting it !!!

  • Your most welcome ;)

  • THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC !!!

Thanks for posting it - you seem to be the #1Ellie fan, huh? :-) Very nice :-) She sure was a lovely lady and a terrific dancer.

  • You're so welcome! Yes she was the greatest :)

  • This was just amazing!!! she was the best and forever will be. no one could duplicate her dancing. and i think thats why not that many people tap anymore. it requires hard work and dedication. Long live the queen!!!

  • Brilliant! How lovely to see her as a mature lady, still with that twinkle in her eyes talking about old times. Thanks for posting it, it's a little gem!

  • Well said. Seeing her on videotape television- out of film character, but with the same charm and steely reserve- keeps her alive forever. Just glorious.

  • This is just brilliant!! Thanks for uploading it.

  • You're welcome!

  • "The Queen of Tap", U betta recognize!
