For anyone in the Northeast USA, you can hear this song being played on the Shoprite music feed while you grocery shop, among other obscure gems. Shopping never has been better.
Sorry about that, ncf--I should have guessed that the gent on the right top was Craig--after all, I did happen to see a video of him playing with the current band. (When I thought about it, I knew that I more than likely had been mistaken here!) Thanks for the clarification--hopefully, Pat McBride has at least kept in touch with Ray and the rest of the guys in some way.
@truethought62 Not a problem...It's an easy mistake to make.- I was at this NC6 reunion...It was really a once in a lifetime event.- These guys hadn't been in the same room together for over 40 years prior to this night. After having a pizza party, the guys did an impromptu jam session, where they ran through a 2 hour set of all of their old records.-For having not played together in 4 decades, The Colony sounded remarkedly great.
Luckily, I videotaped the whole event.- Just incredible!
@truethought62 Technically, the last photo of the band that is shown at the end of this video is not specifically just the 1967 group line-up...The bald guy standing on the far right in the back row is original NC6 organist Craig Kemp, who was with the group from 1964-1966.- Craig was on the first album and the first 3 singles.
When this picture was taken at the NC6 reunion in April 2008, the only original member who was not in this photo is Pat McBride.- He wasn't in attendance.
Thanks for posting this one. I had completely forgotten about it until I just played this evening. I do have their "I Confess" recording on the Sentar label. They were great.
I remember hearing this on WLS in the 60's and always loved it!!! I would go to sleep with my little transistor radio & earphone every night in the summer. great memories, thanks!!!
@MsJune54 You weren`t the only one. Living a couple hours away from Chicago the station would sometimes fuzz out with static but I listened anyway. Ron Riley at night and Dex Card in the afternoon counting down the top 40. I still have a huge collection of the surveys. Enjoyed hearing your recollection.
I lived in Muncie, Indiana and was 15 when this was out. We listened to WERK AM 990 (daylight station in Muncie then, but the BEST!), WOWO 1190 AM out of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and WLS 890 AM out of Chicago. BIG HIT ON EACH ONE! Oh, the memories - HOW SWEET THEY ARE!
This is an outstanding example of the Chicago school of 60's pop. The biggest compliment I can pay is to say that, to this day, if this song is on the radio/CD, once I've reached my destination, the car stays on until the song's over! You KNOW what I mean...I know you do :)
Thanks to all of you for the kind words about the band in general and this tune in particular. Great ego boost on a dreary Monday night... Happy holidays to everyone! Ray, NC6
I have this on/and it was #4 on a WCFL Capsule Countdown from January 1967 and also on a 45. Great song! Anyone who wants the Capsule Countdown, contact me. They also play this and "Let Me Love You" (along with other rarities) at the local Shop-Rite grocery store here in CT.
These guys were the first band I ever saw that had a hit record. Rochester, Indiana - mid-'60s. Learned first-hand then that chicks dig rock stars, no matter what.
the more i listen to these great "non hits" the more I regret having grown up in the New York city area. WMCA refused to play anything that didn't crack at least #50 on the national chart. I felt very deprived, but then I discovered CKLW coming in loud and clear on winter nights
The Beatles,The Stones,The Who..All Great Bands of the 60s...but when it comes to my liking...it was the Turtles,The Grass Roots and Last but not least...The New Colony Six..God Bless you and Thanx Alot Colony!!!
Original New Colony Six group founder (and writer/ lead singer of this song) Ray Graffia put the group back together for a "one-time only" performance in 1988, and the response was so amazing, that Ray and the New Colony Six have continued to perform ever since.- They sound better than ever, and Ray always sings, "Love You So Much" in their performances today....Incredible group!
Awesome, Mugwump!!! Many thanks!!! What a great band. What I can't understand is why Rhino or some other label won't re-issue "Colonized", their greatest hits. The CD is super hard to find at any price.
Yeah, it was #4 in the WCFL Capsule Countdown back in late January of 1967. Thirty years ago when I got that aircheck I wondered who this was doing this song. Took me a few years to find out. Remember, no internet back then. Great song!
All over the eastern third of the United States and Canada. Before FM was popular, for many people in many rural areas, one of the few stations they had to listen to. WLS became the "World's Last Station" to play just about any song. WCFL had innovations. WLS had the reputation of not playing "stiffs", even if songs like this made listening exciting, even if they weren't big hits. CKLW was good too, if you could hear it over the South American station.
When this song came out I was a jr. in HS. I would listen to the top 10 every Thursday night between (PM and 10PM on WHYN. Brings back memories. Wish there was a station that played these regularly that you might not normally hear on oldies stations.
I've got this album. It was a very nice song but didn't climb the charts and I really don't know why. It certainly takes me back to SW Ohio around Feb of 67. WSAI in Cincinnati gave it a lot of play.
There's a very easy answer! During any year from '64-'68, over 1200 songs made Cashbox. In 1995, 190 did. There simply wasn't room for all the good product, even at an average chart life of 8 weeks! Generally, the best won out, but not always. This is an exception. But there are hundreds of others, too.
You are right. The FM oldies format has changed how we perceive the past as much younger music directors determine what gets played today on oldies stations. Lots of songs that were in the Top 20 don't get played and, for some reason, songs at the bottom of the Top 40 do get played. And there was the regional hit factor too. Some well-remembered oldies didn't make it on the radio where I was from.
@mugwump790 It was one of the best under 2 minute songs of the day and was a big hit in Chicago but as was the case back then it was difficult for up and coming groups to break through nationally. They made their mark later of course with I Will Always Think About You and Things I`d Like To Say...
This was my favorite song when it came out. The NC6 was the first band I ever saw, on the Mt. Prospect High School tennis courts - fall 1967?
Sometime in the 1980s, I put this single on the turntable and accidentally played it at 33rpm, and discovered that it would have made a good power ballad. But I prefer the original tempo!
This is one of THE BEST records that The New Colony Six ever recorded.- It's the PERFECT record...Primo lead guitar work by Gerry VanKollenburg, Top-Notch drum work by drummer Chic James, and some of the finest harmonies ever put on record by the group.
I got to see the original line-up of the New Colony Six band members perform "Love You So Much" in NC6 lead singer Ray Graffia's basement this past April at their Original New Colony Six Members Reunion....It was nothing short of AWESOME!
For anyone in the Northeast USA, you can hear this song being played on the Shoprite music feed while you grocery shop, among other obscure gems. Shopping never has been better.

Nice touch putting the updated pic of the 1967 band near the end of the song--Ronnie, Gerry, and Pat standing, and Chic, Ray, and Wally in front.

It's the same with The Association,
NC6 and The Association both had wonderful beautiful harmonies, wrote lovely pop songs, and should have been much bigger than they were.
