One bit of information you forgot about women in Derry is that the city itself is often called "The Maiden City" as the female population is very high in ratio compared to the men. Most people in northern Ireland refer to themselves as Irish over British, the English are the only people I know who call themselves British, in Scotland and Wales most call themselves Scottish and Welsh over British. Just as a word of advice it depends who you ask and some are very aggressive over their nationality
really good slideshow. i would say the quality of the images could be better but the message comes across well nonetheless. i've never been to derry and this, to a certain extent, manages to transport the viewer to the city. i think that my own ancestry can be traced back there; and would like to visit the place in the near future. glad to find out that seanduine's alma mater was the same as saint michael's. they must know a thing or two about effective and productive teaching techniques.
Thanks, clafferty and HiggsFenderU2 for your comments. I left the City because I married a Scottish girl just before she started post-graduate studies in Edinburgh. I sincerely hope that my piece did not advocate that people should leave Derry; it certainly was not my intention in this little retrospective.
That's the only way to look at Derry... while turning your back walking out of it!!! Most of the spots featured on it I've seen someone get a kicking at some point - or standing drinking a carry-out. Keep walking...fast. Don't look back!!!
Thanks. If I did it again, there are a few things that I would change e.g. I'd like to record Feregie McCarthy making his own comments about life in the Bogside.

As a recent visitor with ancestral roots in Ireland, I completely enjoyed the movie! I loved the city and will surely return.

The plain people of Derry will surely make you very welcome whenever you make a return visit.
Thanks for your comments on the piece and you might like to view a re-worked version called 'Revisiting Derry' which you can find on YouTube

Thanks, Cregganwan. Your generous comments are much appreciated.
To borrow from Heaney, Derry is the spring from which the rhythms of my life have flowed.

It may be 40 years since you left Derry but that beautiful voice and accent are as much a part of the city as Brandywell.
Dead right too about the Credit Union. Greatest thing that ever happened here - there are 3 of them you know.
Great movie.

The music is an extract from the Third Movement of Shaun Davey's "Relief of Derry" Suite; soloist is Rita Connelly

This is high quality film making from an author who clearly has a deep, emotional attachment to Derry. Loved the music - who is it?
