I was priviliged enough to personally witness a 400oz bar cut up, revealing it was tungsten inside. Only a thin coating of genuine 9.999 over the outside, probably less than a quarter of an ounce! And this was a bar that was within the central bank system and leased out to Heaven only knows who! This was well over 20 years ago so it's nothing new. God only knows by how much central banks' claimed gold holdings are removed from reality. In the scale of bank scandals, this is THE BIG ONE.

Isn't tunsten magnetic ? Therefore it should be quite easy to establish if an alleged gold bar is a fake gold bar made of tungsten. Gold is not magnetic, i.e. Diamagnetic.

- Heat conductivity

These are really not difficult to do if you are into it ...

Whoever buys huge gold bars can afford to do the necessary tests. NEVER trust the United States Government or any of its bastard children.

You run an electrical current through the bar, measuring the input current and the output current of the bar, then you can compare it to what you know is a pure piece of gold. If you are buying large quantities, test every piece with the oscilliscope, if they are measure the same, melt one down to make sure it is pure.

@DeathOfTheDollar2010 For big investors, its good to buy one Kilogram bars, because that is the size bought by jewelers for making rings and chains ect. Because one Kg bars are expected to be melted down immediately and tungsten would be detected, they never cheat on them.

It's OK to be a paranoid, but if you insist on being so, please get your facts straight. The atomic weight of gold is said to be 196.96 versus 183.86 for tungsten. Gold allegedly has a specific gravity of 19.32 and tungsten of 19.25. Precision measuring and weighing devices (which are now available all over the world) could measure a bar and easily calculate its exact volume and weight for either gold or for tungsten. These devices would immediately detect tungsten bars in contrast to gold bars.
