My view is that as the CIA uses AIG for covert assessments (damage costs/target liabilities), it would be better for AIG executes to get a bonus payment rather than risk intelligence been leaked by disgruntled employees. Call it a security premium if you like.

A free market would let companies like AIG fail. Bailing them out for 170 billion after they made horrible decisions takes away most of the pain they should suffer. The company should go bankrupt, all the employees should lose their jobs, and the investors who owned AIG stock should have lost all their money. The two men who authored the loop hole in the porkuls bill allowing for the AIG bonuses are also the two biggest receivers of donations from AIG last year? Yup the two guys who originally pretended to be "shocked" until they were outed are Senator Chris Dodd (received over $103,000.00 from AIG in 2008) and who we now know personally authored the loop hole and when cornered blamed the Obama (received over $101,000.00 from AIG last year) administration for pressuring him to write it! Impeach Now!
The AIG execs had a chance to redeem theirselves by donating all that money away. At least that way we wouldn't be giving money back to the government and have them bailout another company we go through this mess again.

The bill was 1,100 pages long with less than 12 hours to read much less vote on it. No one could have read or comprehend 1,100 pages within this timeframe. I assume that congressional staffers (11 at 100 pages each?) could have each read portions of it and provided a summary to the representative, but who claims that anyone did this? The public couldn't review it in enough time either. It was rammed down our throats. Anyone who voted Yes should be ashamed of themselves.

The stimulus package DOES restrict executive pay, and most GOPers voted against that. However, the stimulus legislation does not restrict pay on past bailout money (i.e. TARP). There was no loophole created to allow bailouts, they were legal from the start. They just weren't restricted retroactively. Cheap GOP attack.

The amendment was actually modified based on Treasury recommendations and not removed as you allege. I disagree about Dodd being a scapegoat. If he was in clear, he wouldn't have initially lied about being involved. Even if this amendment wasn't in the bill, it would still be a POS anyway.

I am a Republican. This is a poor attempt to make much of nothing. If we, as a party, are going to prevail, we must address matters of substance. The substance here is that the administration is handling this so poorly, crying over bonuses that were due these people. Bonuses that are roughly one tenth of one percent of bailout funds.
Let's focus on moving away from all these bailouts. Bailouts send the wrong message.

It's not a matter of the bonuses, you need to see the bigger picture. AIG executives got the bonuses because they were promised them BEFORE all the economic trouble started. So, legally, they had to be given to them. It's unfortunate that $165 million had to be wasted on executive bonuses who run a company that has a lot of debt, but as I said, it was illegal to not give them their bonuses. Some of the executives returned the bonuses because AIG was in trouble, but legally they didn't have to.
AIG is all smoke & mirrors to take the heat off of the President & Democrats. They want us to completely forget the $787 billion stimulus package and the $410 billion pork package, plus the new stimulus bill being formulated in Congress. How quickly they forget what is important!!!!!

My view is that as the CIA uses AIG for covert assessments (damage costs/target liabilities), it would be better for AIG executes to get a bonus payment rather than risk intelligence been leaked by disgruntled employees. Call it a security premium if you like.

A free market would let companies like AIG fail. Bailing them out for 170 billion after they made horrible decisions takes away most of the pain they should suffer. The company should go bankrupt, all the employees should lose their jobs, and the investors who owned AIG stock should have lost all their money. The bill was 1,100 pages long with less than 12 hours to read much less vote on it. No one could have read or comprehend 1,100 pages within this timeframe. I assume that congressional staffers (11 at 100 pages each?) could have each read portions of it and provided a summary to the representative, but who claims that anyone did this? The public couldn't review it in enough time either. It was rammed down our throats. Anyone who voted Yes should be ashamed of themselves.

This is dishonest and disingenuous. TARP legislation (passed before Obama took office) never restricted executive pay - and many GOPers voted for it, including Boehner. The stimulus package DOES restrict executive pay, and most GOPers voted against that. However, the stimulus legislation does not restrict pay on past bailout money (i.e. TARP). There was no loophole created to allow bailouts, they were legal from the start. They just weren't restricted retroactively. Cheap GOP attack.

The point of the video is that the Democrats are railing against something that they created, i.e., Obama and Senator Dodd (D). Meanwhile Dodd and Obama (through Geithner and the Treasury) were denying that they were partly responsible for it until about two days ago. It's the Kabuki Theatre of Outrage the the Dems are so good at performing. They knew about it when the bill was written. They're liars and there's no way around this charge.

The truth is that there WAS NO LOOPHOLE created in the new bailout legislation, as Blitzer is quoted saying in the clip. It's true the new legislation doesn't go far enough to limit exec. pay, but not one Republican brought this up during their criticisms of the bill. The bill DOES limit pay moving forward, just not retroactively

I'm not mistaken. Dodd tried to add an amendment that would have retroactively limited executive pay for anyone receiving TARP funds. "Someone" from the treasury urged him to remove his AMENDMENT - the excuse being to avoid potential legal challenges. While this is unfortunate, the removal of Dodds amendment did not create any loophole, rather it simply kept the original lack of bonus restriction on TARP in tact. Dodd is being unfairly scapegoated on this one.

The amendment was actually modified based on Treasury recommendations and not removed as you allege. I disagree about Dodd being a scapegoat. If he was in clear, he wouldn't have initially lied about being involved. Even if this amendment wasn't in the bill, it would still be a POS anyway.

I am a Republican. This is a poor attempt to make much of nothing. If we, as a party, are going to prevail, we must address matters of substance. The substance here is that the administration is handling this so poorly, crying over bonuses that were due these people. Bonuses that are roughly one tenth of one percent of bailout funds.
Let's focus on moving away from all these bailouts. Bailouts send the wrong message.

AIG executives got the bonuses because they were promised them BEFORE all the economic trouble started. So, legally, they had to be given to them. It's unfortunate that $165 million had to be wasted on executive bonuses who run a company that has a lot of debt, but as I said, it was illegal to not give them their bonuses. Some of the executives returned the bonuses because AIG was in trouble, but legally they didn't have to.

I don't know what people are talking about because I just viewed the video. In any event, the majority of the American electorate chose style over substance, beauty over age, slogans over experience and worst of all Obama's evasion and in some cases lies about his association with racists & radicals. And now, it is time for the entire electorate to be punished as a consequence of that decision. We need to start working towards a better future, specifically the mid-term election and 2012.
