Continued: Alex continued in the band for a period after Manolo left and WR played as a quartet BEFORE Alex eventually left the band to have some time of and do other projects. And as you know both Alex and Manolo played with Joe many years later in the Syndicate etc.
@Talkingwall: I really don't think Zapdad "got rid" of Manolo and Alex. But so many other things happended. you can reed about this in books and biographies of Joe Z and Wayne and Jaco. But I know from many years of friendship with Joe that - as much love he had for Manolo's musicianship - he often experienced problems with sound clairity live. It was like the congas (espcially) seemed to mix badly with the keyboards - especially in larger halls, plus there were other things happening. TBC...
no matter how hard anyone tries..this type of feel and playing can't be taught!..it's like it's part of their DNA make-up...i bet you if they ever donated blood, the recipient would automatically have a sense of timing and rhythm !
@talkingwall Don't think it was quite like that. They were very much in demand elsewhere. Manolo went solo and played for the Rolling Stones etc and Alex discovered life changing faith. Manolo rejoined Zawinul Syndicate for a long time afterwards. This clip never ceases to amaze me the way they play.
I had NO idea there was video of this!!! I've been listening to the edited album version of this ever since I was 3 years old. You just made my year by posting this. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!
Man I love these cats! Espically the polyrhythm at 5:37 its sick, where can I find more music like this!? Also check Jaco grooving out in the background at 5:41!
I ve seen Manolo and Alex live. What great musicians.. Manolo with Pete Erskine (Weather Report) and Alex with Chaka Khan and Abe Laboriels Koinonia...
Yeah, 'creep, this MUST be the 'Heavy Weather' recording in full. (What's that weird sound in the last measure? There must have been enough mic isolation to be able to get rid of it for the LP.) I was sooooo privileged to spend three days in the studio with Alex back in the 90's - a real life-changer (also had Abe Laboriel and Justo Almario on hand for the 1st 2 days.) He's just a humble Quechua Indian who happens to rule a certain roost! And boy, does he love Jesus...
For you die hards out there...DON'T KILL ME, but isin't this Airto Moreiera? If it isin't he sure looks like it..... and it would explain the dialect between the spanish and what sounds like some other African based stuff, to also include portuguese where Airto was born.
It sounds like some ancient Nigerian dialect mixed with Spanish. My wife just asked me if I knew and I still don't! If I never saw their pictures on the album cover I would swear it was some African drum master of ceremony or griot...looking like Babatunde Olutunji or something! I love itto the fullest!
aw man this is the absolute business...legends here...acuna's drumming here is jus the most amazing ive ever seen...weather report are simply genius...
