@wire22wire I totally agree that one made me cry because now I have a hero in marching band or a band hero lol I actually know a few people in the avon marching band, they work on their show starting in just then once it gets to july they have a competition that will approve how their show works and the theme and everything then another one in august the once november comes around its crunch time to get their pre show that was approved or changed at ther july show then november 20th is the day
@koribae , yes this is a high school, Avon HS a suburb of Indianapolis. They have dominated the Indiana state championships the past several years and rightfully so, they are awesome!
@koribae If you really want to experience incredible watch Avon 2009. Com-Uniform-Ity widely considered one of the greatest Marching Band shows of all time.
The arrangement may be "Against the Clock" but the original music is from Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem. I also heard a little of the Mozart Requiem in there.
@wasid13 That was not added to the show until after state finals. As I recall, the first time it appeared was the Bands of America Indianapolis Regional.
you won my heart in the first 20 seconds....then you played a note.........and now i'm hooked. great job guys. amazing show, amazing performance, and amazing band.
they went from texas style, all gemoetric one giant moving form to copying striaght off a well renowned band's unique style. compare this to 2009 and look at the difference.
i remember seeing thins show at regionals 2007......i was in the band that got silver jeffersonville high school marching band.....we didnt do that great that esp. in the 1st movement.....but you all were amazing really
I heard people say that Avon is getting annoying. That because they are good! I think Avon is unstoppable. Bell just didn't have it this year and Avon was on their A game!
wow, you guys continue to blow my mind hahaha.I saw you guys last year at grand nationals and loved your show! I'm in the Gateway High School Marching Band. Too bad we got 33rd and just missed semis.
This show was life changing. I don't really find avon to be better than any other school...but THIS SHOW in 2007 was the best in the WORLD...able to compete with drum corps. Wish they would do that again...
I KNOW!!! everyone says massive was the best show, but i agree this was our best show ever, and we ended not winning nats with this.... i'm sorry flipped on what shoulda won nats
i wouldnt say compete with drum corps.. its impossible for a high school ensemble to be on the same level as a drum corp. individually and as a group.. buttttt this was quite amazing
Man, when Avon was in class B, they were neck and neck with schools like Northview, Greenwood, and Concord (I go there), now, in Class A, they have practically no competition!
Texas does have a lot of competition, but don't count out the great bands of Indiana, Carmel, Lawrence Central, Ben Davis, Center Grove, ever heard of them??????
AVON IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD!!! :D well i think so :P ... i remember that year! VERY FUN THANKS TO ALL SCHOOLS WHO COMPETED YOU PUT UP A HECK OF A FIGHT!!!! love you all! dude ben davis was totally rockin thAT
Indiana is the most competitive marching band state in the nation. im a member of the Lafaette Jefferson M.B. in Lafayette... and it's tought, but its always alot of fun. Avon is an amazing band and its always cool to see what they are doing year by year... well ill see you guys at semi-state on saturday!!!
Well if you're using amps to bring out the mallets, you really don't need as many. I would take that same cash and upgrade brass equipment, new uniforms or a nice new set of Pearl drums.
This band is great. Mozart pieces are awesome! How do you all get to be soooo good? Do you dedicate everything to band? Our bands here in NM seem too as well, but we are no where are as good as this!
Are you meaning Greenwood only has juniors and seniors? Or Avon? Because Avon has freshmen on up to seniors...we even had an 8th grader last year in the band. Everyone that wants to do marching band is allowed in also.
we wish we were this good. im in the greenwood marching woodmen. the only reason they are good is because they have only juniors and seniors in their band. you have to try for band over and over again. if u suk u can tmake it
One of my favorite openings to a show ever. Though I lose a ton of interest at about 1:30. It just seems like it loses all the pent up energy from the beginning. Don't take offense, though, it takes a lot to keep my interest and the show was executed as well as it could've been I think.
Funded by the entire city? Uhhh NO! Are you insane? 200 + members...YES and it takes an incredible talent to control 200+ band members on the field. A lot of hard work, ALOT of fundraising and alot of time makes this band AWESOME!!!
@ahsspinner07 You might have heard Nishihara High School Marching Band (Japan) play the music first back in 2004. Smaller ensemble, enclosed field, but there band director was also a product of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, as is Avon's director.
I don't get it. Here, in lower Alabama, we do not do shows like these. Our music isn't symphonic in by any means. We do classic rock and pop songs. In fact our 2008 show consisted of Billt Idol, Ozzy Osbourne, Wild Cherry, and so many other artists. Then again, my high school only marches about 78 kids (guard included). lol. Though, small, we're still pretty good. Watch our show. Just type in W S Neal Band and it's the first show (or the show that is eight minutes long)
im in the guard for avon and i sometimes think that too and i was in both shows...but i guess there was just something about the massive show that made it to Nats standards...and just a fact there were about 8 or 9 freshman in the guard '07 year..we have (well since i have been in it) about 40 guard members...we are really acostombed to having a big guard...
Amazing lol. There is a school that came to our competition. The beginning of your show music is just like theirs but after that little run, it went into a mallet percussion feature of Requiem For A Dream. Yall would tare that show up if yall played it. Search Upson Lee high
That's because the Japanese band kids do music for 8 hours then they go home and practice for another 6. But hard work and a stride for perfection is something that is ingrained in the Japanese psyche.
The other thing is, I find that Japanese shows, albeit perfectly executed and technically intense, tend to lack audience connection, which I guess equates to general effect. (does anyone have a textbook definition of what that category actually judges?) Also, I prefer this arrangement of the Verdi requiem, which is a little less heavy on the traditional brass accents and lets the woodwind runs shine, which, I might add are as clean as bleach.
It can seem that way, but it's somewhat necessary, at least in terms of funds for instructors for such a large number of marching band members. Incidentally, I prefer Class C and D in ISSMA moreso than A & B because the bands feel more intimate, and the line between style and substance is much clearer.
um...thats the Verdi Requiem they start with. For a high school band to pull it off like they did is a result of extremely hard work, and even more so because they're doing the marching work with it.
im gonna request my band intructor to play the opener that Nishihara(04-05)and Avon(07) played so the band that im in can win the freaking competitions . . . . LOL just kidding :)
I am glad I graduate this year so now when I go up to state, I get to root on Jasper in class B, and stick around to watch the Class A bands later in the day. They are awesome.
I saw this show last year at State. It was easily the best show there, and my personal favorite from Avon. I am sad that I did not get to see this year's show, though. It's a pain trying to catch up on A bands when you are in B, and it is also a pain trying to find a ride down to Indy.
Good luck in years to come, Marching Black and Gold!
oh my gosh the sheet was over the band for like, 0.0001 seconds! and they still played! and us guard girls don't do all the work, we simply add to the amount of work that the entire band does TOGETHER. dont hate on a show unless you know what its like to work hard for it and be in it.
i loved their show, shame that they didn't win, and i personally ranked ben davis a little higher too, oh well, it was a great year and what's done is done
I don't know why, but Avon's State Performances usually have so much more energy compared to their GN appearances. I'm sure they could have taken home the eagle in 07 had they had the same musical intensity they had at State.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Avon's ending at state final this year where they run off the field is basically a rip off of Homestead's ending during their show of Art of Insanity in 2002
the only thing the same is the fact that we ran off. we were spread across the field whereas they were in tight spacing and they ran off in different counts and we ran off all at the same time.
Man, Avon rocks! And don't think I"m just saying that.... I'm a Carroll student. I heard Lacrymosa in there. Loved your show that year. Push was still the best. Good luck this year guys!
Avon is too amazing(saw them last year).lol My freinds and I make jokes about what would happen if our small 60 member band had to go up against Avon.lol yeaa.....doesnt really take much thought to know Avon would kick ass.lol My band has only 40 people(including guard) and we're in class B,and our school is getting so large that by my senior year (I'm a sophomore) we'll be in class A.(hopefully our band will increase in size). If by any chance we end up with Avon... -_- lol
WoW i really like this show....i saw you at GN last year and i was impressed!..I wish i was in a big band. Im from Columbus North H.S. Good Luck this year....you'll need it..lol..(jkn)
After school practice at Avon must be intense, they never stop moving. I go to Lawrence Central, so I understand completely. I was there too that night, nice show.....you will always be my enemy (nah I'm just playing lol).
Oh wow. I saw this at the BOA in Indianapolis and started crying. It's so beautiful. You guys are so dedicated it's amazing. I watched it twice, and it still had the same effect!
i wish i went to avon for this alone speedway has nothing like it and i actually care for marching band

yay :)
i loved their show, shame that they didn't win, and i personally ranked ben davis a little higher too, oh well, it was a great year and what's done is done

I don't know why, but Avon's State Performances usually have so much more energy compared to their GN appearances. I'm sure they could have taken home the eagle in 07 had they had the same musical intensity they had at State.

Anyone else surprised Lake Central got in the top 5?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Avon's ending at state final this year where they run off the field is basically a rip off of Homestead's ending during their show of Art of Insanity in 2002
thekittleone 3 years ago
the only thing the same is the fact that we ran off. we were spread across the field whereas they were in tight spacing and they ran off in different counts and we ran off all at the same time.
avoncornbread04 3 years ago 5
thats why the end of our show it the 'mass exodus'
avoncornbread04 3 years ago 5
you guys did very well at state this year.
i can not believe you didn't win.
the only thing i could think of would be the "controversial" view of the show.
but beyond that it was amazing.

Thank you. Yes the show certainly has a lot of variety to it.
myshilohmy 3 years ago 3

LC was clean and sounded good, but I've heard Avon's closer was basically the high point of the evening. It's a mystery.

Out played. LC's drumline threw down and honestly, Avon's hands sucked this year.

-_- lol
chibiguy93 3 years ago
and btw this is the first time my band has been in class A and we qualified for regionals again! we'll play at Laffayette Jefferson

After school practice at Avon must be intense, they never stop moving. I go to Lawrence Central, so I understand completely. I was there too that night, nice show.....you will always be my enemy (nah I'm just playing lol).
