I remember finding this song when I was young and naive and and listening to it with my mother without listening to it afterward. Talk about awkward ;D
Good stuff! Every once and a while on a Friday night when my roommate is out partying I'll turn on the speakers and play me some music. This one is always on the list. I wonder what the people walking by outside think?
@joemamaUSA Hey! What you do in your bedroom is your thing. LOL! I'd draw the line somewhere B4 dismemberment tho. That can be a little too permanent if you have any aspirations to keep living.
Beautifully placed. Always loved that song. A twist on where he taught: I was told that, for a while, he taught at Boston University, though I never got the chance to see him personally. I wish I did - would have loved to tell him just how much I respect him.
Please see "Let's Go Visit Commissioner Sarnoff of Miami's Coconut Grove" and click the blue link, and see the reference to Mr. Lehrer's great work in the linked public thread.
Tom is nothing less than genius. Check out his Wikipedia entry sometime. The guy rubbed frontal lobes with some of the 20th century's greatest minds and held his own.IMHO was one of them. Los Alamos, Yale, Harvard, the NSA. Polymath. A term I do not use lightly.
It's so sad that music like this isn't made anymore... then again Tom Lehrer was one of a kind... Just keep in mind that theres no autotune, no corrective computer programs... this is just him
@walshsnl Maybe it's the look on his face? He's clearly having a ball with the song. Also, I can't speak for anyone else, but I have a thing for handsome men in glasses.
Why, why, did YouTube recommend a video about kittens after the masochism tango? o_O; Especially since the rest of related videos are all Tom Lehrer's?
Whenever I see Ladd and Lua from Baccano (an anime) this song pops up in my head, especially the "burn your initials in my shoulder" bit. I think I'm becoming a huge Lehrer fan!
@6funswede onschuld :p innocence in dutch. or: verontschuldigen - excusing someone. I like how scandanavian languages lean so close to mine. Make them so much more attractive :3 <3
@ashy386, because he is a satirist/singer/songwriter/pianist extraordinaire, that´s how. Thank you for watching Lehrer´s videorecorded 1967 performance :-)))
@ 6funswede, I just learned you were, as we say in the USA, a "senior citizen". I always figured you were just a Norwegian teenager with a good sense of humor. :)
@5star555555555, ha ha, no, I am senior all right. I doubt that a Norwegian teenager could have posted these videos, since they were not available to anyone prior to the birth of my more than dubious YouTube channel :-)
I have heartburn right now so I had to listen/watch this. It's been a while. My favorite part is "Take your cigarette from it's holder and burn your initials in my shoulder" lol awesome
I have had the great fortune to direct the show Tomfoolery based on Tom's music several times (in San Jose, San Francisco and Santa Cruz). He is indeed the true genius of comic music. Weird Al is merely a pretender to the throne.
@miapiv89, just click on the user name 6funswede and use the link down on the left side of the page. And while you´re there please try a few of the other links too.
@miapiv89 Go to Amazon and enter Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer. That is the Tom Lehrer songbook with ALMOST all the songs he ever wrote/sang (there are a few missing gems, including one of my favorites, Hanukkah in Santa Monica which can only be found on the box set The Remains of Tom Lehrer which is in short supply.) But most of his music is here with easy chords to follow. Good luck and I hope you have as much fun playing it as I have throughout my life!
One of the many funny things about his music is that if you remove his words, they sound identical to the genre they were written in the style of! Take this song! Have someone listen to this song without the lyrics, say, as a midi, then show them the song with the words. They'd probably never guess that the lyrics would take such a turn!
@Mewtario This is Tom's true genius. He wrote amazing music that stands on its own. He also wrote TIMELESS lyrics. This song and others were written over 50 years ago, and yet remain relevant today. I used to play his song Send The Marines at parties from the 70s to as recently as last month. People who do not know the song ask "was that written about Vietnam/Grenada/Iraq/etc?" (choose the current war) and would be stunned to find it was written in 1964 about the Dominican Republic invasion.
@bleurose51 I wouldn't doubt it! I am a teenager, and showed a friend of mine When You Are Old and Gray; every word of it was true for most relationships in today's generation, it seems, and they were shocked that it was written in the early 50's.
The genius of Tom Lehrer, is that he combines rhymes that are painful yet clever with very strong musicality. This composition very nicely parodies the typical tango.
I bought his first two albums, "Songs by Tom Lehrer" and "More Songs by Tom Lehrer" when they first came out back in the 1950s.. they were issued on both 12" and 7" vinyl.. still have them.. all of his stuff is brilliant..
@hrlaser, that´s nice to hear. If you are short of ideas for Christmas presents, buy The Tom Lehrer Collection for a friend or enemy. And, NO, I´m not a paid paid promoter :-) The collection has Lehrer´s best songs and the videotaped performance too :-)
Tom Lehrer is awesome. Love his stuff. I had him as my professor at UC Santa Cruz and I didn't realize it was him till about halfway through the quarter and then I was totally star struck. I seemed to be the only one in the class who had any idea of his past. Good professor too. The one time I gathered my courage and mentioned I love his music after class he made it fairly clear that he doesn't do any of that anymore and wished for me to keep it quiet. Still a cool funny guy though. Go Tom!
@potatoman87, thank you for your comment. Strange to hear that Tom Lehrer could go into a room full of Cowell College students at the UCSC and few of them would know what a (comedy) genius he is. But to Lehrer that must have been satisfying, because he is not exactly a sucker for attention. Please send the YouTube "6funswede" channel address to your friends and enemies. The channel is Lehrer only :-)
@potatoman87 Tom was amazingly helpful to me when I did his show several times, but he absolutely refused to participate in any of our publicity and he never saw it either (he was afraid people would recognize him.. he is very much a recluse, sigh). In all our conversations, he always made it clear (as he did to you) that there was no way I would ever be able to see him perform his songs. He was happy to play piano and sing other tunes (he LOVES Bernstein, Sondheim) but never his stuff.
@potatoman87 Aw, I find it really sad that he wants to distance himself from his music and his past. I wonder why on Earth that is? He's so damn talented.
@holahellomarhabahi, Tom Lehrer does NOT distance himself from his past. When Shout! Factory suggested a CD/DVD release in 2010, Lehrer said "okay", and he has done nothing to remove the low quality copies of his live videos on YouTube. But even as early as 1960 Lehrer decided that he did not want a career as a singer-songwriter, satirist and performer. Watch the "Tom Lehrer talks" - video by clicking on the (stupid) username "6funswede", and you´ll get it.
@holahellomarhabahi Yeah, but I totally understand that--he may not have been comfortable being famous and constrained by a certain objectification that comes with notoriety.
I love this guy. I think NOFX's Cool and Unusual Punishment song is a clear reference to this song. 'It's not fun 'til someone gets hurt.' Also a great song.
@carathebaker, not, it´s me who should be thanking you. Click on my username and I promise: No bullshit videos, just Tom Lehrer and nobody else. Have you got any enemies? Email the channel link to them :-)
Pure genius. It's amazing to consider that Tom Lehrer was at his peak in the late 50's and early 60's. At least 40 years ahead of his time. I've been listening to him since the 60's and i still laugh out loud sometimes.
@mrhearse777, thank you for your comment. By the way, Lehrer is a fan of Noël Coward (and I'm a fan too). There is a link to the Noël Coward Society (and some Kinescope recordings of Coward) on the "6funswede" channel page :-)
@mabarry3, not at all, and I don't even know him. But Lehrer was almost never on TV, especially in the United States, and this recording was forgotten for 40 years. To me, he is the best musical satirist ever and my point is this: If people buy the collection (CD/DVD) the recording will be even better preserved because people always care more about stuff they pay for (even if it's less than $15).
fantastically amusing!! Played so beautifully too i have now watched every video of Tom's i could find. Laughing all the way. thanx for uploading, it's been a pleasure.
@Face0fRoadkill1213, oh thank you thank you! I enjoyed this comment very much. Yes, please click on my stupid user name "6funswede" and enjoy the Lehrer only channel and his material. He is fine with that! And if you wonder what to give to your enemies for Christmas, look no further than in the description for this song :-)
I love that his music is so great that it spans generations my dad first brought his music to my attention when I was 14 I have always loved it and I always introduse people who have never heard of him...
Usually at 2:37 he would say the english word Excuse me! I think it`s a nice little touch that he instead here chooses to go with the Norwegian word for Excuse me witch is Unnskyld.
tom lehrer thank you so much for your brilliant music. you have brought many laughs to your fans. and although it may have not been your intent you gave masochists like me a theme
@Plaguedmarionette, again, thank you so much for this contribution. Now we have two people -- Lehrer and you -- making people laugh after they've seen this page :-)

@plaetoe and really sad that he stopped writing songs. so many jewels that never came to see the light of day... :(

Noel Coward with more edge. A true genius. America produces much dross , and then this diamond! !
mrhearse777 1 year ago 4
@mrhearse777, thank you for your comment. By the way, Lehrer is a fan of Noël Coward (and I'm a fan too). There is a link to the Noël Coward Society (and some Kinescope recordings of Coward) on the "6funswede" channel page :-)

@6funswede Are you related to Lehrer or something? You seem very interested in people who buy the DVD and listen to Lehrer. Just wondering.
mabarry3 1 year ago

Usually at 2:37 he would say the english word Excuse me! I think it`s a nice little touch that he instead here chooses to go with the Norwegian word for Excuse me witch is Unnskyld.

His satire remains fresh to this day. Just awesome!

I'm really annoyed that the sheet music book I bought has really simplified this, the piano playing is just gorgeous!
