There are 2 endings to the commercial. The chess board simply symbolizes the strategy and skill it takes to wage battle. it is not simply us versus them. A black Marine and a white Marine. Obviously for recruiting but also a display of togetherness when it comes to protecting this country. I would think it an honor for the Marine Corps to choose two of its own to make such a commercial. Marines are asked to do a lot for little financial gain.
There are many posts that say this is a dorky commercial. That is okay. But, I hope everyone understands that those that say that owe their right to say such things to the men and women of the U.S. armed forces who fight for the right and freedom for such things to be said in the U.S.A.
this commercial is the third in a trilogy. First the Sword was mad. the second commercial was where the king dubbed the warrior a night. This one is where the King commisioned the night to battle for the Kingdom which is what our Marines do.
@madhippy3 It would be silly, if they were trying to recruit middle-aged men, or 27-year old grad students, but they're basically trying to appeal to men ages 15-19, during the 1980s. And for that purpose, this is an ENORMOUSLY effective commercial. One of the best I have ever seen. When we were teenagers smoking weed in the 80s, and this thing came on, we'd all stop talking in order to watch it.
@alahatim this was good but not gunna lie todays commecials are almost adrenaline pumping and gives me the chills. if todays commercials were played back then it wud be a lot more if yu understand wht i am saying
although I served in the Air Force and Army National Guard, after watching this commercial many times it inspired me to write a short paranormal story. The sad part about serving our military is the whackos in Congress are secretly cutting programs that are suppose to help us veterans especially for those wounded in combat. To all of my fello vets I salute you.
@alahatim I heard this commercial came out in 91, I was born in 93 and joined the Marines August 11th of 2010, I ship out July 18th 2011. I admit, when I first seen this commercial earlier this year I thought it was kinda cheesy but your right this commercial is really motivating.
@BigDude472 Did he serve at 8th & I? As soon as I viewed this vid I said to myself he looks like the Adjudant at the Evening Parade Marine Barrack 8th &I.
This one of the dorkiest commercials I've ever seen. It's a good thing Marines are badass enough to pull it off. Too bad I won't be able to join when we are using lightning swords and stuff. *EPIC*
This commercial is a bit ridiculous. It had the potential to be inspiring, but didn't come across that way. (However, I guess different things appealed to people of different eras.)
I believe Afghanistan is still going on, and in Iraq we won the war against Saddam by removing him and weakened the insurgents and trained Iraq's soldiers to defend their selves. We don't need to be their anymore, its not a loss. You also forget operation Just Cause which was a win.
@xxwaterboyxx15 the taliban may be shitty fighters. but their are still lots of them in iraq and afghanistan. As soon as we leave either both places will just continue being shit holes. we should stay as long as possible. plus i want to go overseas before they pull out.
dude, in this world you are a pawn one way or another, some take orders in a platoon of brothers, some people take orders from a boss in a cubical, and some have to do things based on what the economy, and other nations do....... or you are a hippie living in bumblefuck doing nothing with your life in which case you dont matter...... and i dare you to call a marine a pawn to his/her face.
The marines always make cool commercials, but this one wasn't all that good. You don't see a single marine until the end, almost makes me think it's for some kind of chess tournement or something.

The United States has been losing wars since Korea because it enacts a chess-like attrition strategy.
Korea-incomplete victory
Vietnam-loss
Gulf War-win
Iraq-loss
Afghanistan-loss
Chess like attrition strategies only worked in WWII and before
