Mike Love doesn't deserve to be in a room with Ringo, let alone Bob Dylan. That man had a good voice and never wrote shit. I love people with huge egos for doing nothing.
@4FabBEATLES Disagree - Springsteen at the time was an internationally famous, critically and commercially acclaimed artist (and there are very, very few of those in the history of music) who also followed in great American songbook tradition and picked up from Dylan (well, tried to). I think if you've knew anything about Springsteen and what he's done, you'd get it. Certainly, Dylan rated Springsteen as one of the very best to follow him and he had to shrug off the "new Dylan" at first.
@THthefirst I agree that Springsteen is a great musician and important; I just think it would have been more fitting to have someone who actually knew Dylan and worked with him directly or inspired Dylan,. In my opinion, someone like Little Richard or one of the Traveling Wilburys-or even someone who was greatly influenced by Dylan like The Byrds or Hendrix. SPringsteen did a good job;but I would've preferrered someone else. thats just my opinion
@4FabBEATLES Maybe, but by 1988 all of Dylan's idols were dead - remember, dylan was born in 1941, so his heroes would have been middle aged by the 1960s. I wouldn't say that any of the Travelling Wilburys were any more influential/respected by dylan than the Boss and I think the Boss took over Dylan's mantle as the American voice so it was natural for him to pay homage to his inspiration and hero.
I agree with you, Springsteen's always been vocal about how much Dylan's meant to him and he did a very nice job. Hendrix or Lennon would've been good choices, but...
@Rossonero072213 HA! I would love to have heard the phone call where somebody asked John Lennon to present the award to Dylan. holy shit if you knew some of the things Lennon thought about Dylan.
Hm. He admired him. A lot. Probably more than any other contemporary. I know John said some shit about Dylan after the Beatles broke up, but Lennon said shit about everyone during that period. He continued to mention Bob in some of his songs & songs like Working Class Hero are obviously Dylan-influenced. And he quoted Dylan songs in interviews, too. And I know Dylan's Christian conversions probably turned him off, but I don't think he ever lost his respect & admiration of Dylan.
They should have shown Mike Love's expression when Dylan pretty much owned him. I bet he was fighting the urge not to storm the stage and start a rant in response.
I love that Bob mentions Muhammad Ali, Little Richard, and Alan Lomax. Put those three together and you get a pretty good explanation of what Bob Dylan is.
Bob Dylan is just a cool one of a kind genius who's never afraid to say what he thinks. He is accountable to only one person...the only one who counts, God.
He tells it like it is in his songs & his life when he so chooses.
What's with these behind the stage shots? I've seen lots of clips of this speech with a front-on camera view. Why the RnR HOF have to select the worst clip is strange.
Go listen to Mike Love's acceptance speech on the same evening. Bob didn't have a beef... but Mike lOve sure did! Balding asshole Beach Boy strikes again. What a cheesedick! Go play another Full House reunion you fucking loser!
LOL then people wonder why Brian Wilson chooses to tour on his own rather than with the band that he himself put on the map... Mike Love just sucks that badly as a person!
@hanghang71 Check out "Beach Boys accept" from the same year. Love basically acted like an asshole, dissing a number of people by name, and Dylan was understandably glad that the jerk had nothing to say about him.
Mike Love is the biggest asshole in the world. He in no way should represent the Beach Boys as every single Wilson brother hates his guts, and they were really the band Love doesn't do shit he is just a corny wannabe MC.
