I'd like to point out that from 0:57 the singer seems not Bartoli. She was not that tall, not that slim, not the look, not that kind of voice and the presentation on stage was just not like her. Can people who post it make sure about this? Thank you.
I have seen this production live in Zurich last year. Bartoli's performance was absolutely marvellous, she was also a great actress. There is a very big difference between her live performance and this video. Fortunately, on stage, her voice didn't sound as "tense" as on this video. This is one of the mysteries of her voice: why is it so difficult to record it?
the most appropriate video for bartoli's voice would be a fat man shittin'on a toilette. Unfortunately this woman is so comercialized that people convince themselves that she is a real artist.yes technic, but all the rest (timbre, musical taste & sensitiveness, dynamics, interpretation )is DISGUSTING
It's the same Carsen production from Aix more than a decade ago! Kinda surprising that a new production wasn't mounted for La Bartoli. She looks delicious and sounds awesome! Her English diction is great, at least judging from the few lines here. Who would've thought we'd see her singing in English?
Thats Opera - They focus more in singing n arias than acting. They have to be brilliant in singing while Broadway have to do more in acing than singing. Not saying that they are not good singers but it just not the same league with opera.
the baroqe works is always tuff. long arias with three lines of text repeated fifty times and lots of runs. You should take a look at her Sussana with Bryn terfel.
that's a feeble excuse ("baroque music is tought to act"). Rosomary Joshua sung exaclty the same part in the same production back in London and she did it beautifully. Bartoli is just overacting like a manic clown....
I don't think it's to do with the era of the music. She doesn't act as well as a soprano as she does as a mezzo. The mezzo roles are her roles. That simple.
What has one thing got to do with the other? How does singing high tessitura affect one's ability to act? Never heard that one before.. You can either act or you can't..
No, you're right, it's not about the tessitura. It's about how the mezzo parts are written. The mezzo or seconda donna roles are recognised as those with the most character, and that is what Bartoli excels at and can bring to an opera - she has great comic timing, a sharp wit, and her performances have a distinct bite; all qualities associated with mezzo heroines (Rosina, Isabella, etc. etc.)Therefore, the mezzo roles display her natural gifts in the most dazzling way.
ceicei please come to the united states! i really miss your singing and i miss you! <3

infact! she doesn't seem my cecilia...:(

@YingYingChang - From 0:57 onwards that is not meant to be Semele - it is JUNO dressed as Queen Elizabeth II. Therefore it isn't Bartoli.

I saw this production in London. I distinctly remember that Semele stood in the light on the carpet throughout: presumably the diva refused.

Is she turning into a soprano????
And...she sing English???
Amazing!!!!
Who is the singer with the crown, Birgit Remmert?
Please add more???
andreasscholl 4 years ago
She's not turning into soprano, her range allows her soprano roles from what I know but she's a mezzo to the bone!
FloriaTosca85 4 years ago 2
Yes andreasscholl, it's Birgit Remmert as Juno.
