If you look before the inbounds pass, that ref is giving the usual 5 second signals with his arms. He got down to one when the pass was made. I think in his head he just kept counting down to zero and mistakenly went by that timer instead of the actual game timer/shot clock.
@LakerLandLegacy Bernie Fryer claimed that there was no way Davis could've completed that motion in 0.7 seconds, and even though it was released before the buzzer, that was only because there's a natural lag between when the player touches the in-bounds pass and the clock starts.
When Fisher hit his 0.4 shot, I was thinking of this exact play. If this one didn't count, Fisher's probably shouldn't have, either, but whatever.
theres 310 million people in the United states as of 2010. i like at LEAST 309,999,999 would agree that baron davis got it off in time. Bernie Fryer is the only one that says otherwise. im not even a hornets fan but this fucking pisses me off. fucking dumbass
I remember this like yesterday,I miss my hornets, baron had a triple double he beasted mcgrady, this is his best shot and it should have counted we got robbed but we won in Ot!!its all right we about to get our name back I don't like the bobcats untill they get hornets name back I'm a laker!!cam newton carolina panthers#1 the real steve smith deangelo stewart double trouble
i remember this game very well, I was rooting for Orlando, and once baron hit that shot I was pissed cause even I could see it counted lol. But prior to the 2003 season there was no review on last second shots, and the idea was listen for the buzzer. After that game, and the pacers Nets game 5 where reggie miller's shot should not have counted, they decided to put instant replay for last second shots at the start of 2003
I'm a Magic fan and that was a horrible call, I remember that like it was yesterday. I'm still surprised it took numerous bad calls in the 2002 playoffs to convince Stern to use instant replay some 5 years later when they finally started using it.
I remember this so clearly, even 9 years later. I was jumping around my living room when it went in and it took me a while to figure out what happen. This play was one of the main reasons they now have instant replay in the NBA.
Crazy shot, one of many controversies in these playoffs, but at least the team should have won did win in the end, unfortunately as good as this game was it pissed me off cuz the phantom overtime caused me to miss the beginning of the Kings game that day
@akt0m what I don't understand is US as the fans, we KNOW it's good by just looking at the replay here on youtube but the refs who actually have it on camera in front of their eyes can't notice that the shot is good or what?! woiw Baron was robbed at least 1 game winner in his resume`
Oh man I remember this! If memory serves me correctly, at the time, the nba rules stated that with less than a second left, the only allowable offensive play would be a tip shot without touching the ground...no two-footed catch and shoot. Because of this, they changed this rule after the season ended.
Ok - some missed calls I can understand, but that is not even close. How can a referee good enough to officiate a playoff game miss a call that badly at such a critical time? I'm sorry. That is terrible.
This should have counted unlike the Reggie Miller bank shot 3 pointer in game 5 vs. New Jersey! I love B Diddy but I have stated before Davis is "a player you love to hate unless he plays for your team"
This shot didn't count because at the time the rules didn't allow you to catch and shoot the ball with less than .8 seconds left. Its not that he didn't get the ball off in time, because he did, it doesn't matter when points do not count if you are in possesion of the ball with less than .8 on the clock. you must tip-in, or 'dink' and shot. of course, now the rule is .3 to catch and shoot.
I totally remember this. Great memories (well, not specifically this moment) from the days when the NBA was actually good. I was 14, and I was BIG TIME into the Hornets. I had a rented big screen TV at my house, and after Bernie Fryer (worst official of all time because of this call) waved it off, I slammed the remote down on the ground, slightly damaging it. It's easy to laugh about now, but man... I was FURIOUS. We sure took out our anger in OT, though.... we ended up winning by 10, I believe.
he made that
