  • In my opinion, you can't sing Bon Iver's songs in a different way from the original, it's like a murder. Maybe you just can't sing Bon Iver's songs at all. I mean, Justin Vernon is the personification of music and this certainly affects the performance. I'm sure Peter Gabriel is a good musician, but Flume performed by him is like a completely different song.

I hate that he's like shouting in the chorus, there's no need to! He's killing the delicacy of the song. Just my opinion, though.

  • Peter Gabriel is without a doubt a fabulous musician. But music is a such a personal experience... Bon Iver is much younger, beginning a musical career and has a totally style from Peter.

  • this is a great song. its peter gabriel's take on the song, not his own. its never going to sound like the original because that would be a direct rip off. i prefer bon iver's version as im sure peter does but it doesn't mean that this is a bad version of it.

  • @METROmassacre Very well said my friend.

  • even if God covers this song doesn't reach the same feeling as bon iver. i think.

  • it's Peter Freaking Gabrielle people. There are few artisits on the planet who can say they recieved a nod from such an icon, let alone the honour to have one of the greats cover your song. This is simply amazing - more over, It's recognition of greatness. Everyone is inspired or influenced by someone else and I personally thinks its the beauty of art when Peter Gabrielle can still be inspired.

  • Nobody 'butchers' a song. The original song is always there.

  • Both versions are excellent (this and Bon Iver's) But, you can tell which is the cover and the original. This just doesn't have the same feeling as the other. Just me?

  • good cover, but bon iver's version is hard to top

  • It's a cover, his own take. You shouldn't compare the two because they are both coming from different directions. I love both of these covers, in different ways.

  • Well, is it just me or can you hear the words of his version better than original? Bon wud b fantastic if his annunciation was better so he will stay very good until he sorts that out I'm afraid..

  • @everwood67 Shit call mate.

  • As much as i love some of Peter Gabriel's work, sometimes, if you listen carefully, you can hear him disappear completely up his own arse. Not as good as Bon.

  • Hmm it's just not the same when I can understand the lyrics.

  • this hurt my fucking soul. I don't care what anybody thinks about this, but this version does not bring justice to the song at all. I don't want to be vulgar, but I almost threw up in my mouth.

  • this sounds like it would fit in more on Bon Iver's new album with the horn arrangements and such

  • it is a good cover in a musical sense, but i think the versions have different feels and i like the Bon Iver version a lot more

  • damn peter gabriel bring me to tears with this song bon iver version is good too

  • bon iver has the delicate pride of love, peter gabriel's take has a desperate and overpowering sense of realization about it. powerful stuff.

  • Bon Iver fanboys please die. It IS ok to cover a song and it doesn't have to sound like the original AT ALL to be good.

  • All this criticism and "blah blah blah Peter Gabriel and Bon Iver are too different" stuff.

Go listen to Beth/Rest haha. Music is Music.

  • I completely disagree with all this criticism. This is an amazing cover and I do not think the chorus is too intense. The song is intense and that's it. It is completely different from Bon Iver's with Peter Gabriel's touch and style, being as beautiful. I absolutely love Bon Iver, and Re: Stacks is actually one of my favourite songs ever, but I prefer Flume by Peter Grabriel.

  • Bon Iver's original has a bit of a spiritual experience attached with it.. This just, does not. Justin Vernon's voice cannot be replaced on the track, not even by a great like Peter Gabriel..

  • I don´t like the cover, I don´t like the voice.

  • Well I have never listened to Bon Iver. But after hearing this excellent song sung by one of the greatest singers, artists and musical thinkers of all time then it has accomplished it's purpose. I will listen to some. Wonder how many millions of other people just heard of the guy as well. :)

  • It's not Bon Iver. That's where it fails.

  • I think people are being too protective over the original. This is a fantastic cover, yes it's not the same or as delicate as the original but it's Peter's own take on the song and I think it came out really well.

  • i actually quite like the way he belts out the chorus and the strings build. i'm not mad on the way he almost talks the versus though.

  • Do not want. Nothing but respect for Peter Gabriel, leaving Genesis and going solo wast he best thing he ever did, but Bon Iver is Bon Iver. Their styles are too different.

  • If Jonny Cash was alive today he'd be covering Bon Iver. That's a fact! Well it's not a fact, it's purely speculative. But yeah...

  • This is an interesting take on the song.

But I dont think it works as well as the original.

  • It's a testament to how good Bon Iver that someone as established as Peter Gabriel would cover one of his songs.

  • lame respect it. but lame

  • @trildos well said

  • If you haven't listened to Bon Iver, then you don't know what is music...

  • Sounds like a guy at a karaoke trying to impress some woman- good but no emotion

  • I kind of just wish I was listening to Bon Iver...

  • Not really possible to cover Bon Iver, but The Chairs do this song much better than PG. Check it out, its on here.

  • it just sounds so... normal. I don't think it is possible to up the near perfection of bon iver

  • @raywingsx where do you live where this sounds "normal"?

  • No....

  • Such split opinions on this Scratch My Back title. Peter Gabriel's voice always makes me relaxed. This version might not have delicacy as the other version, but it is emotional in a powerful way, if you get what I mean. I like it.

  • I really really like both covers, each in it's own way

  • at one point I expected Kate Bush to start singing 'It'll be alright' ... as much as I like Gabriel it's an average cover, I bet Justin Vernon was thrilled at having such a huge name do one of his songs.....Damn when are we getting new Bon Iver stuff ?

  • @theNomadz indeed WHEN WILL THERE BE NEW STUFF !

  • This is that shit!

    Fuck Yeah PG!

  • This is a horrendous "attempt" of one of Bon Ivers most beautiful emotion-filled pieces.

Go ahead and vote me down. Peter Gabriel is a wonderful musician, but this is terrible.

  • @Porfaavor I agree with you, but the Piiano (with and without Orchestra) on the verse of Gabriel's version is so beautiful. I love both versions, Bon Iver's is somehow a little bit more authentic (imho) ... Cheers!

  • Love it so much!

  • As beautiful as the original in a completely different way.

  • Respectable cover.

  • Justin Blows

  • @damienmetalwind: you must be some british cunt

  • @greenfury87 Nope, just an American who doesn't like Justin. I do like Peter Gabriel though.

  • @greenfury87 hey nothing wrong with a scotsman, I'm british but he is a idiot!

  • I have to admit that I like this cover better than the original, it sounds more tragic

  • fucking awesome.

  • The intensity of this version is wonderfully splendid. The way Peter strains his voice is beautiful; it adds another layer of emotion.

  • @LittleStevey1221 Give a listen 2 our cover by searching Ramble and Wake. Let us know what u think. Thanks.

  • hate to be critical and i'll probably get voted down on this, but it just dosent have the delicacy or affection that comes with the original. the chorus is far to intense and overpowering. could be just my opinion but hey?

  • @Porfaavor That's true. I find this version to be way more dynamic and more emotional at times. But I think it's a good cover. Gabriel really made this his own, where other covers usually just try to copy the original. I instantly fell in love with this version!

  • @Porfaavor possibly, but then again it isn't the original

  • @Porfaavor I love the original with all my heart..And i love peter gabriel. I think he nailed it in his true style..It's his subtle-ness that I'm glad he stayed true too. Flume either way.

  • @Porfaavor i totally disagree gabriel has a far better voice

  • @Porfaavor definitely agree. it is a ghastly cover and nowhere near beautiful. bon iver is so great because his songs are so raw and you can hear and feel the experiences in the music. this just sounds overproduced and is sung without feeling. i don't like it and nobody should do bon iver unless it is him or someone approved of by him. same thing with that piece of shit that covered biffy clyro's many of horror. ruined the song.

  • @Porfaavor It's Peter Gabriel, that's why.

  • I don't like how OMGINTENSE he made the chorus, but it's still great.

  • a beaut... still, i dont think it can beat bon iver

  • He did a beautiful job with. Hands down.

  • it reminds me of shatner butchering rocketman.......

  • At first I didn't know what to think of this, suppose I was just put off because JV isn't singing his masterpiece. Although, now I've listened to the whole song a few times and yeah I understand why people are hating on this. Like Ellie Goulding covered Wolves (act 1 &2), I could only comment telling her to die. This is different, this is just beautiful.

  • @05OsborneRh hahaha

  • gross. He successfully squeezed every drop of sincerity and soul.

  • superb song, turns something that was originally beautiful in a stripped down way into something equally beautiful on a grander scale, the brass is perfection.

  • I hve loved every version I have heard thus far. This song is awesome, I think :D

  • this version is clearly very intimate. The original is still the best quite clearly because of the impact it had the first time you heard it and of course it will always be more intimate and emotional when the original singer/songwriter does it. I have to say I enjoy this interesting cover - the original still is the purist.

  • This song didn't need to be covered.

  • One of the most breathtaking covers I ever heard. No one sounds like Peter Gabriel except Peter Gabriel. I don't understand the haters.

  • I love this! Never would have heard it if Peter didn't sing it.

  • not a fan... the intimacy of the original has been stripped away

  • What does that even mean?

  • the original had this very intimate feel to it. i don't think this one does.

  • This is amazing.

  • nearly cried listening to this.. both version are oh so beautiful.

  • @k8iidevro if you like this song you should check out our cover search ramble and wake and check out our originals as well!! lets us know what you think.

  • Ahhh, stunning, I do like the bon iver version but i am an accoustic bigot.

I am going to see Peter Gabriel at the O2 in March, ill wait and see how this comes out live.

  • gross. i like the orchestra addition but i prefer to listen to justin and his nylon rather than peter and his piano.

  • way to go to mess up a beautiful song

it's not bad, but when compared to the original, which with all covers really, they must be, this really doesn't stand up.

Actually, the more I listen, the more shocking it gets...

  • Simplistic Beauty

  • sao the story of bon iver goes like this.. he is from a small town in minnesota. this is the story of a guy that had his heart completely broken. he then went up to his families cabin and he only packed his essentials. he took his guitar with him and his recorder... he then wrote "Flume " and the rest of his album. what he did with heartbreak is he turned it around and used his sadnedss and created something amazing.

  • Wisconsin, not Minnesota. Otherwise, great summary.

  • Wisconsin, like Eau Claire Wisconsin where he went to Eau Claire Memorial High School...with me. And you may be overglorifying him a bit.

  • Amazing! The song has now a different dimension.

  • the original just seems more heartfelt and suits the context more for me, this is good though.

  • I love how many music snobs are on here like "hmm tut, the original is better" even though Peters goal was to do these songs without drums or guitar, just with orchestra. I actually think his version is better than Bon Iver's

  • Peter LEGEND Gabriel forever.

  • not bad - I think he missed the mark, though.

  • the original one is much better
