  • BEST WAR SONG EVER!

  • Proud to be a Celt. Being part Welsh I respect the Scots a great deal, Welsh and Scottish, the last true Celts (As well as the Irish).

"When they come, a wull staun ma groon. Staun ma groon, al nae be afraid. Thoughts awe hame, tak awa ma fear. Sweat an bluid, hide ma veil awe tears."

"When they come, I will stand my ground. Stand my ground, I'll never be afraid. Thoughts of home, take away my fear. Sweat and blood, hide my veil of tears.

  • The Celt's blood is a warrior's blood. I am Portuguese, the Celts had a lot of influence it ancient Lusitania. There's a story as well of a Portuguese soldier in WWI, Aníbal Milhais, that, by himself, stood against a German invasion with a Lotz machine gun, covering the retreat of 16000 portuguese and scottish soldiers. His supressing fire cause such an effect on the germans that they thought they were aggainst a whole Portuguese-Scottish regiment. Only Celts could do that. Complements to you.

  • It´s not a scots dialect! It´s the way we scots talk, and it was written in the way we talk ... Sad that ye disabled the embedding ... Would have loved to share it on FB ...

  • Brilliant my friend, just bloody brilliant!

  • I love how the Scots chew on their words when they speak! A lot more so than call centre English!!

  • The English Verson - To the best of my knowledge. Translation. ========

Lay me Down, in the Cold Cold Ground, Where before, many men have gone. Lay me Down, on the cold cold ground. Where before, many men have gone.

  • Its a mix of Gaelish/scotts and English

  • i have noticed that thus song is in most war movies i didnt figure out the name of it til today

  • I would say, Its a mix of English and Scottiic Gälish, because he said : Lay me doon ->

This have a English/Scots and Gälish tounge

    A mix ^^

  • nice

  • I'm 100% scottish, I reconized this song, my dad plays it on his bag pipes

  • Sgt Mackenzie is sang in Scottish Dialect, which is a recognized language. However it is very similar to English, with a heavy accent.

  • Heres the beginning of the song in english Lay me down in the cold cold ground Where before many more have gone Lay me down in the cold cold ground Where before many more have gone When they come I will stand my ground Stand my ground Ill not be afraid Thoughts of home take away my fear Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears Once a year say a prayer for me Close your eyes and remember me Never more shall I see the sun For I fell to a Germans gun

  • it is scottish

  • its in english .......... he jus happens to have a scottish accent

  • its in scots

  • I think it's some type of scotish/english. I translated it like this : " Lay me down, on the cold cold ground, where befor many men have gone. Lay me down, on the cold cold ground, where befor many men have gone.

When they come, I will stand my ground. Stand my ground, I may be afraid. Thoughts have came, took away my fear. Sweat and blood, hide away my tears. Once a year, say a pray for me. Close your eyes, and remember me. Never more, shall I see the sun. For I fell, by a germans gun. "

  • Translated it, ?

Wit ur ye oan aboot min? thirs nain needit, oanywan kens wit the loon is gurnin aboot

  • its in english, the singer is scotish

  • its sung in scots slang not english

  • @ pepsicolaftw

The Song is sung in "Scots tounge" so really it is a prober language .

  • I don't think it's any real language but word soundalikes in english.. "Staun ma groon" means "Stay my ground" "Al nae be afraid" "I may be afraid" or something like that. "Thoughts have came, take away my fears" Sweat and blood hide away my tears" it's a very good and touching song...

  • wich language is this???

    its funny

  • gaelic -.- or irish i belive

  • heavy scottish accent

    - lay me down in the cold cold ground where before many men have gone-

  • It's not funny at all. It's Scottish, and it is extremely sad and moving.

  • Scottish

  • its in english with a heavy scottish accent

  • It is not English at all. Its a Scott dialect and your first clue should have been the amount of Latin used.

  • Absolutely tremendous, that would bring a tear to a glass eye, I know that bagpipes are not everyones cup of tea but they just sound so haunting on this.

  • Makes me want tae greet this yin.

  • gaunie make me greet this yin.its gaun tae ma favourites

  • sounds so haunting like a funeral dirge should. Awesome tribute, i'm sure Sgt McKenzie would approve of such.

  • This is in my will to be played at my funeral , RAF all the way

  • its a verry good song

  • it was very good to put it in the movie! it was kind of sad, and made you think about war differently

  • Brilliant, a very universal song, even with the Scots dialect, excellent post......

May God be with our troops

  • Alba gu Brath!

  • the words you wrote came directly from Wikapedia

    I laugehd at that

  • lol your right the lyrics and the part at the beginning about sgt mackenzie

  • I had Relatives in this war and my Great Grandfather was a FeldWebel in the Austro-Hungarian army from 1914-1918. four other Great uncles plus another Great Great Father Fought for Austro-hungary as well. and two Great Uncles fought for Russia. One died he was from Poland. The Great War is the worst war ever fought. I however am very intrested in it. God Rest those souls who are lost .

  • Excellent work! literally teared up to this...

  • where was he from? Scotland or was he from Britian?

  • Sgt. MacKenzie was Scots. Of course, there is no Scottish Army, so he was a British soldier; yet he served in a Scots regiment.

  • Right dude...the REAL scottish army dies with William Wallace.... XD

  • R.I.P to all the brave scot soldiers who layed there lives down for liberty during the great war,

Long will thye be remembered as the Laddies From Hell !!

  • ach! i made a mistake, i just listened to it again, its "where before many more have gone", not "where before many men have gone" i hang my head in shame

  • translation for all the people not fortunate enough to be scottish :P

lay me down, in the cold cold ground, where before, many men have gone

lay me down, in the cold cold ground, where before, many men have gone

when they come, i'll stand my ground, stand my ground, i'll not be afraid

thoughts of home, take away my fear, sweat and blood, hide my veil of tears

once a year, say a prayer for me, close your eyes and remember me

no more, shall i see the sun, for i fell, to a germans gun

  • some powerful words dude!

  • it's actually not that hard to translate the text, even if you aren't scottish. Im danish myself and when I read the lyrics it was pretty obvious to me what it meant

  • yeah, it kinda reminds me of how you'd write old danish dialects. Maybe thats why it's obvious to danes.

  • I dont understand all of it, its is not written in plain English, but I get the most of the song, but what does "al nan" mean at 2:09?

  • I'll not

  • im pretty sure it means ill not be afraid

  • It's actually "Al nae" simply meaning 'I'll not'. He say's "When they come I will stand my ground, stand my ground I'll not be afraid." :)

  • i'll not

  • ZXKENT IT" MEANS I WILL NOT"

  • mmmm very good way to describe it .... Haunting

    Seaforth Highlanders

Who along with many others gave up his life

So that we can live free

    We will remember them
