  • Hey - here's the words to the poem (freshly scraped of the internet):

Sad solemn notes and crates of newly drawn stout,

the usual symptoms when a life goes out.

But the extinction this time being 7 times the most.

The music held no echo and the tears drowned our toast.

Sorrow and bereavement, life has no meaning now, silence is master.

Laughter and song bowed for gone went our great captain to some more hospitable inn

where can't and hypocrisy can no longer embarrass him.

  • I love Irish folk music, The Dubliners along with The Clancy Brothers were two of the best. This is a great appearence of Ciaran Bourke, as well as a lovely song. Thank you for posting the video. :)

  • never forget boys, never forget

  • if you swap bono for luke kelly then you would have the best line up of singers ever

  • Fantastic music and video. Thank you!

  • My mum knew the dubliners in the sixties and we bumped into Ciaran on the boat across to england in the late sixties. My ma and he were up all night in the bar - they came down to wake me up and he sang me up the Mersey - I was six. he was this great big lovely man with a beard. What a great soul

  • 2:13 Bono couldn't deny himself a little sly smug grin. Always a twat.

  • @solvejgcraig Very True, what a prick. Him and that other asshole Haughy.

  • @solvejgcraig Twat indeed!

  • I wonder if the last line of " cant and hypocrisy can no longer embarrass him" was aimed at Charlie Haughy?

  • Poor Ciaran :(

They were truely an asset to Ireland and especially Dublin!

  • Hearing Ronnie Drew or Luke Kelly singing "The Auld Triangle" always brings a tear to my eye. It's such a moving song sung by legendary men with amazing voices.

You giants of the Emerald Isle

  • @AngusGibsonT I believe this is misinformation, according to John he was not blind at the end, he did have some trouble seeing but was not blind by any stretch of the meaning.

  • @ICwater1:

heh, ya. Have you seen the full show (late late show, dubliners 25th anniversary special) ? ...it was pretty obvious Charlie, the cunt, invited himself. He didn't really come off looking all that welcome, especially in retrospect.

So in a way - I was happy to see his ugly mug, only because he came across as the miserable shite-hawk that he really is.

  • trust that robbing bollix haughey to get his face in

  • tears in my eyes ,thanks for posting

  • Who is the man wit the beard standing behind christy moore and the fella wit d tash beside him?

  • it looks like a couple of member's from stocktons wing ..

  • God bless you Ciaran...a true credit to Ireland.

  • what actually happened Ciaran? I've heard rumours of suicide, also a stroke. He looks certainly like he'd suffered a stroke in this vid. Does anyone know for definite?

  • As far as I know, he died following a long battle with a brain tumour, he suffered a number of strokes (one of which left him blind, as this video shows). Never heard of him committing suicide.. maybe that's someone confusing Ciarán with Bobby Lynch (who was in the Dubliners for a year) who killed himself in 1982?

  • ah thanks, yeah chances are I just got confused. you never hear Bobby mentioned ever, was he at all significant in the group?

  • We all know Luke Kelly died of a brain tumor, but I have heard that Ciarán had an aneurysm in like 1974, the repair of which gave him a lot of neurological problems like paralysis, blindness, etc.

  • @brummydubliner He had a brain aneurysm. And bascially fought with those complications until he died. There's some good info.on his wiki page. He actually tried to tour with the band after his surgery. Unfortunatly, it took it's toll on him and he had to stop. Luke Kelly was the one who died from a brain tumor.

  • @brummydubliner He suffered a brain Aneurysm in the early 70's, forcing him to retire from playing. He suffered strokes as a result of that throughout the rest of his sadly abbreviated life.

  • @brummydubliner mostly right, he diad in 1988 due to a cerebral hemorrhage and many apoplectic strokes. God bless him :C

  • @pinacoladathe5th According to wikipedia he had a brain aneurysm and the bleeding of it caused left side of his body to be paralysed.

  • @pinacoladathe5th "Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy.'”

he had so much of a happy heart which always was full of hope.. i would never believe he committed suicide..

  • @pinacoladathe5th

Ciaran suffered from a cerebral haemorrhage since 1974. For this he had to leave the band, but formally he stayed a member. Till 1988 he had many apoplectic strokes which resulted from the cerebral haermorrhage. Therefor he was astoined at one side of his body. In 1988 he died as a result of all this.

  • Most of them are still alive you fuckin ape.

  • i've only just started listening to the Dubliners and they're brilliant and to all the band members

    R.I.P.

they are and always will be great

  • was ciaran blind at the end of his life?looks like it in this video...

  • yeh i think he was good song aswell

    R.I.P Ronnie drew

  • what does "ciarans bourkes final appearance" mean?

    superb stuff

  • Sorry, that is a bit vague isn't it? This was Ciarán's last TV appearance, just a few months before he died.

    Tom

  • I sincerely send a challenge out to anyone who can find music with more passion from their country, than that of Ireland. The pain, the poverty, the struggle, and finally, the success are felt in each of these voices singing an Irish classic. Truly majestic.

  • r.i.p ronnie drew

  • what's the name of the poem Ciaran enbarks?

  • It's "The Lament for Brendan Behan" by Joe O' Broin

  • @brummydubliner One of my favourite poems. (but anything by W. Collins, J. Masefield, or W. Whitman is better.)
