  • When I watched this scene I couldn't help but 'chapeau' Catelyn's guts! I fell in love with GoT even deeper from here!

  • was a good scene along with the wolf killing the assasin, new being beheaded and the final scene with the dragons.

  • cat is dumb...but yeah the scene is cool as shit. in my opinion, she's the reason everything went to hell

  • @ArvyE

This was just an excuse for the Lannisters. They would have killed Robert eventually and claim the Throne.

  • @balaalalaslk That dreaded letter eh! Littlefinger can really be a bitch sometimes

  • Valar Morghulis

  • @xqLwantFame Valar Dohaeris

  • Stupid move as it was, Cat's stupidest thing so far was her advice about the bread and the salt. Honestly, I still facepalm every time I remember that.

  • @allyandlarry The entheresthing thing it was the Lannisters but the dagher was not Tyrions it belong to Joffrey i think it was in The Feast of Crows or A Dance of Dragons

  • Fantastic scene. Stupidest move of all. But still, Catelyn knows how to pull it off. Even if it is stupid.

  • Poor imp Lord

  • The best part about this scene, for me, is that it's one of the VERY few times in the entire series that Tyrion is genuinely taken by surprise. He genuinely doesn't have a clue wtf Catelyn is on about here, as Baelish did this off his own back before Tyrion was named Hand.

  • Great scene. Pretty much how I pictured it when I read it!

  • @squamish4244 I think it's because they were all raised in the North where everyone was honourable and respected their father. You have to be taught how to be a political master mind but Ned didn't teach Robb because he himself didn't know, same with Sansa she thought all men were like her father and brothers. They're not stupid it's just that they had a sheltered upbringing

  • @SlamDunkStudios Come on give Littlefinger some credit! If Catelyn didn't kidnap Tyrion he would just find something else (what Catelyn did was legal by the way)

  • Bronn does nothing because he can't fight ten men at once, lol.

  • @squamish4244 Bronn is nobodies man at the tavern, lol. Just some douche who comes along for the ride for the coin.

  • @Killearnable Yeah he was like, "Not my problem."

  • Full agree.. this scene gave me fucking goosebumps hardcore.

  • Fuck the Freys and Boltons

  • @alexpascu2785 exactly... the Frey's and Bolton's deserve to be spited and char'ed to a crisp.

  • @Killearnable Thanks

  • @Killearnable Skined alive

  • In a later episode when his older brother who actually pushed her son down fgrom the wall is captured in battle she finally has a chance for revenge, but is stopped by the realization that Lansa is still a prisoner at the palace.

  • Catelyn is really one of the most dislikeable characters in the book. I never got over her talking shit to John, one of the best characters. Then she pulls this move and sets a war in motion and gets her husband killed. And she's also attacking another one of the most likeable characters in Tyrion. I almost prefer Cersei to her.

  • @Mises85 You must not have kids. If you did, you would know how a mother protects her brood, which is what she's doing here in the tavern. "War" was already begun when the Lannister assassin stepped into Bran's room.

  • @Beergut222 The real sad thing is that lannister's are not that bad of a clan/people/etc.. Just the actions of a few cause this whole war. Tywin (once you get know his back story, he's not that a bad of a guy) reminds me alot of my father. BEFORE you start spouting shit about my father i suggest you read the series to at least book four and you would know what I mean.

  • @Mises85 I would never prefer that backstabbing whore to Cat. Cat is only trying to protect her children. You can't fault a woman for that. Cersei is by far the least likable character in the series. Cersei does not do anything for her children; She is only interested in one thing=Power.

  • its like they took it word for word from the book. great scene

  • Oh Catelyn. You make these major decisions that are perfectly understandable and justifiable from where your position, and yet they're always so very, very wrong.

    Still, epic scene is epic.

  • i get goosebumps every time

  • Starks' biggest problem is that they are NOT good at political maneuvering and timing AT ALL.

  • @Bek359 Which is only thing the lannister's are good at... minus cersei of course

  • @AnahSkywalker, @OcelotDAD Cersei and that bastard son of hers are the root of all evil i think. Catelyn really has not much of a choice here, after all, she really believes Tyrion had something to do with the assasination attempt on her son.

  • @OcelotDAD No. Even if she didn't take Tyrion Stannis and Renley would still declare themselves king, Ned would still tell Cersei which would cause his downfall abd in turn make Robb join the war. Tyrion's kidnap had little to do with it

  • LOVE THIS SCENE....REALLY IS EPIC.

  • late fucking frey i hate him

  • This was the beginning of the war, plain and simple. Everything is Catelyn's fault.

  • @OcelotDAD No... The war started with Joff and his hurt pride.

  • @thestranger4812 When did that episode come out?

  • This is mirroring a scene in a season 2 episode of Boardwalk Empire, where Chalky White is displaying his influence among a group of prisoners before ordering them to take down a thug. Very similar display of power to what Catelyn does here.

  • @thestranger4812 And thats true. When i saw it in BE i thought about this scene too.

  • @SlamDunkStudios Not really. Stannis and Renly would've proclaimed themselves kings anyway. And Ned would still tell Cersei causing her to kill him making Robb join the war. Tyrion's capture had little to do with it except give Catelyn haters something to complain about!

  • @AnahSkywalker Yes, but the burning and pillaging of the Riverlands (including the Siege of Riverrun) was a direct response from Tywin to Lady Catelyn for the capture of Tyrion. The Mountain even emptied a sack of trout at one of the villages he had just sacked, as a warning to House Tully, from the Lannister's.

Apart from the Battle of Blackwater, pretty much all of the fighting in the war was done in the Riverlands, and it was instigated by Catelyn in this scene.

  • @AnahSkywalker Jaime wouldn't have attacked Ned. Tywin wouldn't have attacked Riverrun. But yeah if it wasn't Tyrion being kidnapped it would have been something else.

It all started with that letter Cat received in the pilot

  • @Dark417 She's one of my favourite too :) Michelle played her brilliantly!

  • this was epic both in the book and in the series!

  • OHHHH! Darn I love them all....

  • Catelyn is one of my favorite characters in this series and yes this WAS a badass scene.

  • Arresting Tyrion = massive fail

  • This seems like a win for Lady Stark, but it was actually a terrible and ill-concieved plan on her part, and arguably lead to the War of the Five Kings.

  • @SlamDunkStudios It was an "On the fly" move, not a solid plan she'd pre-planned. She was only in the South to see Ned and tell him what happened with the assassin and ran into Tyrion by accident. She figured that if the Lannisters siblings were all in this together, then he'd tell them she was in the South as soon as possible (before she'd be back in the North) and the assassin failed so they'd move against the Starks then and there.

  • @SlamDunkStudios No...there was going to be a war regardless... Once robert died and Eddard learned the truth about cersei's children...well, The S**t was going to hit the fan.

  • And badass of the year goes to . . .

  • this scene is so awesome

  • Aww man this whole scene played out so gangsta, best scene of season one. I know it's not real, but I find myself wondering if Tyrion knew what was about to go down. Epic how they all just pulled out on him in concert.

  • @esscco In the book he didn't know what she was getting at till she spilled the beans about her son.

  • Bad ass

  • She is most hated character in my book.

I remember reading it,on one page she thinks how war would not be good for her father lands and page later she orders them to seize Tyrion.

  • The pen is mightier than the sword.

  • how is this even an epic scene?

  • @cocaineuk87 How is this not epic you dumb twat.

  • BAMF = Catelyn Stark.

  • I know a lot of people hate Cat, but I think I'd count her as one of my favorites. She actually has many great traits, all of the mistakes she made were because she loved her children. It felt like she wanted desperately to be a hero to her children, but couldn't because of the situations she was put in. She is in my opinion, a subtle yet well written character. I look forward to seeing more of Stoneheart.

  • Robb was stupid in regards to RW, agreed, but her kidnapping caused the war and was the reason of ned's death. As for the wedding, just read her wise counsel.

I don't know but she is my least favourite character in a song of ice and fire, exept joff.

  • fuck I hate this bitch. she caused the RW thing when you think about it. I hate her more than cersei!

  • @Ariobarzanes1388 No rob caused the RW and Neds stupidity started the war.

Sure she made the war start a couple of months earlier but we still have Eddard "to stupid to live" Stark fucking around in KL.

  • @StateOfAolbainia SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO HASNT READ ALL THE BOOKS how did neds stupidity do it? it was actually mostly down to littlefinger he told lysa to kill her husband and then turned on ned stark with the whole city watch thing. Sansa is also partly to blame cos in the books she tells cersei neds plans. Joffrey prolonged it by beheading ned stark and stopping all chance of the war against the northmen being a short one. jaime also cos of throwing bran and attacking ned stark.

  • @StateOfAolbainia also it was sort of robbs fault but you cant really blame him for falling in love. However, i'm pretty sure that any of the other kings who were in the same position would do the same as rob did by going to the rw. It is pretty much the freys fault becuase of guest rights which they didnt observe, which is expected in the 7 kingdoms

  • @JDrakeify Stop discussing spoilers. :P

  • @OutswingingYorker tbh if your looking at the comments past the first page your a bit stupid not to expect spoilers

  • @JDrakeify Uh, no. I'm currently reading A Feast For Crows, so most spoilers here will not really be spoilers for me. I'm saying it for the sake of those who haven't even read a single book.

  • @OutswingingYorker yh i meant your as in not you personally, but anyone who did look on the comments past the first page and hadnt read the books

  • @Ariobarzanes1388 How did she cause the RW? By convincing Edmure to get married? That was actually a somewhat smart move, given Robb's situation at that point.

Robb caused the RW by being incredibly stupid.

  • @OcelotDAD I wonder why Martin made the Starks so stupid. I mean, you can be noble and smart at the same time.

  • @squamish4244 They're not stupid. Robb and Ned were both extremely good tacticians. What the Starks lack is political savvy.

  • @Bek359 That's what I meant.

  • @Bek359 That's what I meant.

  • agree, best scene in season 1, i love it.

  • I used to think this was epic..until i got an arrow to the knee..

  • all in all...probably not the smartest thing Cat ever did..

  • I don't think Bronn is with him yet?

  • Bron is like... "shits about to get REAL!!!!"

  • gave fuckin chills the first time i watched it. amazing way to end an episode!

  • Hodor!!!

  • Michelle Fairley is such a great Catelyn Stark! Not that Peter Dinklage is a poor Tyrion, but he has received so much praise already. Someone has to like Catelyn best, and that person is me!

  • @slychd She's mine!

  • Wrrrhhrhrhr!! Oh boy, well play Lady Catelyn

  • I nearly shit myself with glee at this scene, love it. But I do wish they hadn't cut the line where she bears the scars on her hands from the assassin's blade for all to see

  • hang all freys!

  • Not epic. Needs more Hodor.

  • is that the black bat of harrenhall i see embroidered on your coat?

...there is nothing embroidered on his coat.

  • @theleechlord I thought the same. Pretty lame.

  • Lady Stark, I'm afraid I don't quite see the POINT of all this.

I am going to capture you, then not ask you any questions about who killed my son and let you go just so Tywin Lannister can get pissed off and attack my father. See, it makes sense if you're stupid.

  • @theleechlord In the books, she did ask him about what happened and told him about the blade and what Littlefinger told her. He tells her that it isn't his blade, and he'd never bet against Jaime in a tournament so Littlefinger lied to her. I think they cut that out so Tyrion wouldn't immediately get rid of Baelish once he was Hand of the King (in the books Tyrion seems to forget all about Baelish framing him so its a plot hole).

  • @ShadowSonic2 Yes.

    AFTER she captured him.

  • @Jings0b Well yeah, he'd be in a perfect position to lie when he was free. Even Jaime knew there was no point in lying once he was captured (when he told her he threw Bran off the Tower).

  • House Lannister deserves all the ill that has befallen them. That and very much more.

  • Something about having tons of people all aiming their blades at Tyrion just seemed to make him more imposing. Such a small man requiring so many to hold him.

  • @Shoelpkof yes but that is because you didn't see him enter. He entered with 2 heavy armoured guards with swords and everything.

  • @Shoelpkof Requiring? ¬.¬

  • I imagined this scene more epic when I read the book...

  • I haven't seen the series - but if this is the "most EPIC" scene, it must be utterly boring!

This is so not epic! It wasn't even emotional. It was just a stilted woman giving a wooden speech and making accusations without giving even a hint of a proof

  • @PeMue1985 It's a bit more epic if you know what it is about.

  • @PeMue1985 I agree that the word "epic" is somewhat misused here (then again, so many words are nowadays), but in saying you haven't seen the series you've sort of waived your right to have a critical opinion on it. It would be like glancing at the back-cover blurb of a book and offering judgment. The scene has more weight if you're invested in the characters.

  • @jeangove The starks were all an honorbound ppl. It's part of what usually ends with them being butchered. While your right, this wasn't the only action that caused the war, this caused major strife between the Starks and Lannisters, and actually gave the Lannisters reason to summon their troops, giving them an advantage over the other parties in the war.

  • The poor bastard realized what was going down at around 1:11.

  • Daaaayum.

  • She fucked everything up when she did this. Man, stupid, stupid Tully. How come you didn't learn anything from the Starks? You killed them all :(

  • @MrExtasiz Why is this one action the cause?

If the Lannisters didn't attempt to kill her son, this action wouldn't have been necessary. If Eddard Stark had a tad more wisdom than honour, this act would have resulted in the Starks outdoing the Lannisters, and winning the Iron Throne.

So don't go stupid Tully on her. This was one of the actions that led to the Starks' demise, but it wasn't conclusive and it wasn't alone.

  • @jeangove01 She is stupid because she had no proof Tyrion had done this. With no proof, she decided to insult House Lannister, unleashing the most powerful House in the Seven Kingdoms. Eddard's honor killed him for a different reason, he was too noble to watch Cersei's kids die at the hands of Robert. But as for her, she kidnapped a Lannister. These guys have most of the Seven Kingdoms in their pockets, why on Earth would you want to insult them without proof to bring to the King?

  • @MrExtasiz You know nothing. She was given the information by Littlefinger that the dagger which the assassin was armed with was Tyrion's. In current days this is circumstantial evidence enough for a arrest. Conviction is another thing. Read the books for more insight into what actually led to all this.. I will not say what, why, who or how, but read Book 3. All is revealed.

  • @MrExtasiz The Lannisters are not the most powerful house in westoros they are only the wealthiest. House tyrell has nearly as most gold and can raise a much larger army .The Tully are quite rich and have a army near the same size as the lannsiters, the Stark are allies with house tully and they have a large army too but I agree catelyn was stupid but she thought that they tried to kill her son.

  • @jeangove01 Well, to be fair, it was only Jaime Lannister that did it. I understand the whole "mom getting justice for her son" thing, but really, among noble families, throwing around blame is dangerous. Especially since Tyrion himself had no part in the whole thing to begin with. He wasn't all too happy about being accused of something he didn't do... Everyone just kinda gets fucked over in this series.

I agree with you about the cause being more than just this one action, though.

  • best part of the scene is bronn just idling sipping his drink to the right side of the screen at the end. while everyone else has their sword out :)

  • this part gave me the chills because she did that like a boss!! sawesome ..it..indeed was EPIC!!!!

  • Walder Frey is Catelyn's friend? Heh.

  • @Rhulad I got past page 700 of aSoS..... HOLY $H!T

  • @Rhulad ease up there, don't give away too much ;)

  • @Rhulad Depends on which Walder, there are so many of them :P

Jk, But THE Walder Frey IS one of the Tully's lord bannerman, so he is honor bound to house Tully. Though he really doesn't give a shit, the old fart :P

  • Also the most epic fail ever. She basically gives the Lannisters the excuse they need to start the war.

  • @gilgalad72 and joffrey fucked up by not letting them stop it

  • it would be epic if tyrion had actually done it.

    since he didn't it's pathetic

  • when i first seen that scene i was like YEOOOOOOOOO catelyn stark is gangsta :D but really though that part was epic.

  • Michelle Fairley is awesome as Catelyn Tully/Stark!

  • Think it may be someone's time of the month

  • Catelyn just pwned Imp for 500 gold!

  • totally fucking owned XD

  • Wich page in A Game of Thrones is this`?

  • @ps8hand

I think that it was somewhere in the middle of the first book.

  • @ps8hand Depends on which printing you have. In mine -- mass market paperback, 1997 printing -- it is pages 291-292.

  • I loved this scene

  • Epic scene? Catelyn makes mistake after mistake throughout the series, this is the worst of them all

  • @hameed I completely agree...

  • @hameed Exactly, you got it; and the biggest mistake is coming

  • This scene isn't epic, at all.

  • @Slyther83

actually it is pretty awesome, i was looking for this scene and almost gave up till i put in "best scene"

whats great is her ability to rally all those men behind, i certainly appreciated it, but hey, i respect your opinion as well

  • thats pretty much same as the book right there

  • thats pretty much same as the book right there

  • THE GODS IN THIS SERIOUS FREAKIN HATE EVERYONE!

    seriously..

  • Tyrion: But... But... Why?

  • Ahhhh, Catelyn Stark....always doing stupid things. Maybe now that she's a wight she'll start acting on common sense.

  • @USN1985dos yeah, first thing she did was the execution of The Beauty. not a good one as a wight.

  • @USN1985dos

I think she had some brain decomposition since then. The "Mercy" and "Sensibility" parts went away. The ghost of Ned needs to slap his Corpse-Wife.

  • @TheTraumarama

    Lol, I agree man.

  • Right after this scene, my interest for Game of Thrones became stronger!

  • I think the gods of this world all gathered one day, and said, if we had to make life hell for just one man in all the world, who would it be.

And in one voice the answer was a resounding "Punish Tyrion Lannister, that Goddamn Dwarf." Poor guy. I love him all the same. Awesom dude.

  • Of all Lannisters to be in the middle, I would've had Tyrion dead last... poor guy, like seriously, you didnt really need 17 swords drawn on Tyrion right? LOL

  • Too bad it was Joff who sent the dagger to kill Bran

  • @Aggellos703

Epic spoiler FTW. Just so everyone else also knows, Joff dies. One of my favorite deaths of the series.

  • 2:00 Sperm blows all over :D

    LMAO

  • my god this is so bad ass i cried

  • 1:52 bronn is like what the shit :D

  • Comment removed

  • I read that in the book. I've read each of them even Dance... probably four times by now... though seeing all that steel bared at Tyrion... the noise... man that gave me goose bumps.

  • God, Catelyn so started a very large storm of bad things.

  • @FeralRed I would of thought Jaime was the one who started the shit storm.

  • @2897241 Well, that IS true, Jaime did cause a shit storm. . . but Catelyn definitely made the shit storm a bit worse.

  • @FeralRed well when you think about it , the real shitstormbreaker is the one who sent the assasin to Bran's chamber. until Jaime confesses having throwing Bran from the tower Catelyn was under the assumption that it had been an accident. In case you haven't read the books I'm not telling who sent the killer .. all I can tell you is that was someone we all hate ;)

  • @2897241 Ya I guess she kinda added gas to the storm then lit it on fire lol.

  • @FeralRed Jaime started it but he didn't do it in the open..

Catelyn & Ned both made rash decisions for taking Tyrion (Cat) & declaring Tywin as traitors/rebels (Ned)?

They're an honorable family but too honorable! I just knew from the beginning

they're gonna have shits happen to them. :(

  • Comment removed

  • @hoihoibeat Well actually I think it was Robert who sadly laid foundation to all the problems, by claiming position which was way over his capabilities and marrying woman who he didn't love (though, granted, he didn't have much of a choice at that point). Or it may be even Ned's fault, for not being able to step up to the plate when he should (and gods know he would've been a good king). But in any case, there lies the root of all the "shitstorms". What followed, was simple causality.

  • @madeye0 yeah.. he could have at least treated Cersei better. Have you read Feast for Crows?? There's a person there that might have cast the first stone :3 As I read the book, I find it harder and harder to hate the characters..

  • @hoihoibeat you don't hate Cersei??? I have read Feast of Crows and if anything, it has infuriated me a lot more on Cersei's character. It also made the book very very hard to read as I can hardly stomach such naive cruelty.

(minor spoiler for non readers) sure she was paranoid of her younger half brother because of some prophecy but from the way I see it, she has never shown any kind of affection to Tyrion even b4 meeting maggy based from Oberyn. Also she made Joffrey the monster he is

  • @Xyntech06 not hate..more on pity really. Cersei is a product of her family, her father, Robert and her insecurities. I used to see her as a woman fighting for her place in a world of men, but she became bitter and more insecure. Ultimately that was her downfall.

And its not just Cersei...there are other characters that I used to hate..and later on written in a whole new light. Except Joff..will forever hate that little &%^$*&

  • Actually, I think Catelyn is a cold bitch. She annoys the hell out of me, both in the books and the series. She was horrible to Jon and Tyrion even though neither of them has ever done anything to harm her or her family. But what I really cannot forgive her is abandoning Rickon and Bran, a 3-year-old and a child in a coma.
