While prison rape is a common punchline on TV shows, it actually has a more complicated social hierarchy you'd thing. Read a sociology book or something. Prison doesn't just mean "YOU'RE GONNA GET RAPED IN THE ASS," that only actually happens to a handful of the inmates.

From the research I've done (in sociology classes!!!), I understand that prison rape IS very common, and probably more common than the layman thinks (who would probably consider it a gross exaggeration of reality). You're absolutely right about the complex and deeply rooted social hierarchy, but I don't see how the existence of such a hierarchy nullifies the concept of prevalent prison rape. Of course, social science majors aren't the experts; prisoners are.
