  • sat in on new years eve and watched this i had the same look on my face as phil jupitus it was great to see a star born

dont get to see it happen very often

the last time was Tracey Chapman on live aidbut when you see it its something very special

  • this guy never ceases to put a smile on my grumpy old face..

  • Dirty, raw, and rough around every edge. Wouldn't have it any other way!

  • Steve's set with his drummer pal at the Hop Farm Festival last weekend was ABSOLUTE KILLER the realest blues, rock and roll set i've ever heard and the best sound since LedZep IMHO. bought his album on vynil on my way back though brighton, the best thing to happen in music for years, real tastes better, tastes good ;)

  • that's an ad-ver-tisment. :)

  • @rsauwantzt It is a small empty box to make his foot stamping louder. I t is not electronic. It is a heavily booted foot on a wooden box.

It simulates the sound of a heavily booted foot on a planked veranda. Try that... Now we have a bass drum MMM!

Down side is if you keep doing that will fall through it.

  • Can also use an old newspaper instead of a piece of carpet.

He calls it's a missisippi drum machine btw. :)

  • @Jesus45U It's form the old Flamenco (Spanish right? No, African and Indian). In Spain they use a big box that the 'drummer' sits on. That 's a cajon. A wooden box to be tapped with fingers, hit with heels, slapped with palms and all sorts. You can also tilt it so directing bass hits to the audience, A cajon is normally about 3 feet high. I have sat on one in Spain and made a fool of myself even though I'm an accomplished drummer.

Hope this helps as a very long answer :)

  • Eh ... I'm guessing it's older than that.

The roots of it probably goes back to when humans stomped their foot on the ground.

I think it's an item that has been reinvented so many times, that noone can really take credit for it's origin. I reckon Misisippi Drum Machine is as accurate as it gets.

I'm not surprised to hear they have something like it in Flamenco.

Heck, the Vikings had something like it.

Basically it was a small bench from a longboat.

    Served the same purpose though.

  • love it

  • what ist this what he use as a bas drum?

    can anybody tell me?

  • for better quality video watch the other one with most hits...this is washed out

  • one of the greatest bluesmen I've ever heard, period.

    And I've heard them all.

  • You clearly have nt.

  • They should buy Meg White one of those drum machines like sea sick steve, sounds better!

  • God bless Mississippi

  • Me likey!

  • Excellent. Reminds me of The Groundhogs........wonder if they're on you tube? Must look now

  • Yeah, it reminds you of the hogs cos what we listening to is John Lee Hooker - Seasick and Tony McPhee/Hogs are really just interpreters and re-arrangers of Hooker's music. They great though, I'm not havin a go at 'em! Its only music and when it has the groove.........watchoutttt !!

  • I've never really listened to this before, until someone directed me here. But I'm glad they did! Next time I spot his CD, I'll probably buy it. He made blues chart-topping again...

By the way, what happens when he breaks a guitar string? Does he play everything with 2... then 1 string, and then none? Haha... that'd be interesting actually in a live show...

  • there is a vid where he plays a one string guitar you need to see it its realy nice!

    This is the title:

  • @ some of the lower comments that this will knock off the screen - your damn right OddballSherman, i'd wait all year, but only if i could GO see him.

Also, thanks for uploading it. the one i saw was cut off a bit.

  • i love this gut he is SO funny !!!!

  • Excellent - i remember seeing it at the time...my bro sent it to me today...love it. How can he play that 3 string...his fingers must be like leather.

  • U know something u folks out there? This Steve guy is a GENIUS.

Sometimes SIMPLE things in life is far better than over-hyped, over-advertised, over-commercialised shit we've been subjected to for most of the year. This simple, old (but more energetic than a cross between cock-heads Amy and Pete, dressed-down (yeah ok tramp-lookin), musically-endowed and humble bluesman from Mississippi really made my 2007. He reminds me of the legendary John Lee Hooker.

  • You said it mate, you said it.

  • Steve is such a legend! i saw him at the Bestival in 2007, will never forget it!

  • hes so awesome x

  • itriana,

Listen son, I knew from his record label he was on 2006 Hootenanny so I prepared to record it on my small Archos media player ( ie not great quality )

Why some commenters havn't noticed the name of this video ( hootenanny 2006 I don't know ) Also Check the posted date of this clip above right and you will see I posted it on here about 1 hour after it was aired live on TV.

So the facts are there bud , dont post abuse thats not true.

    UKGSER

  • Have you seen Steve live? I bet if you had you'd wait in all fookin year to see him.

  • just legend...all i can say

  • Just shows what you can do with a guitar and a block of wood, brilliant.

  • I want to know what this "televisual event never seen on television before" was.

  • Me too...

  • wicked

  • hes been on both times each year and he is fantastic !!

  • Yeah, along with ten, twelve and others. All the Roman numerals on a clock are up there. The six and seven have no particular significance. Sorry to burst your smartarse bubble though. It was the same set (give or take) this year as well.

  • LOL 2006 see the back ground 6 and 7 in Roman nunerals. A Big a hint

  • It was 2007

the 6 and 7 are the roman numerals from the massive clock/set they had

  • this was the previous year. 2006-2007.

I saw this years and it was better and different :D

  • Oh shizzle, well i know what i meant, it was the 2006/2007 one haha, if you get what im saying. It definetely wasnt this year though

  • oh yeah, sorry man, it was the countdown to 2007, hahaha, sorry, my mistake, take care.

  • Sweet

  • Just saw him on Jools 2008,... oh my god.. HE was a surprise!

Beautiful, deep music.. and he only had two strings this time... wow. Legend.

  • three

  • No, no no... there were two this time. It was clear from the close-up. Have a look at Later with Jools Holland 2008 holiday special. I know full well there are supposed to be three, but there were definitely two this time...

    Did you watch it?

  • The reason he said it has three strings is because there's three strings, get it?

  • Well, I concede.

I wish, I owned an hd tv, so I could see the third string. But fair enough...

    I suck, Steve rocks :3

  • I'm pretty sure he said there were three...
