Hey, just a random question, can I record sound with this? Like I play a note and it keeps playing forever, it just stops when I turn off the pedal. Can I do this with Memory Boy?
Does any guitarist know a pedal that kills the attack of notes and creates a more whole and sustained sound like a violin or cello. The only example I could give is Alex lifeson of rush in 'la villa strangiato' or Jamie Cook in 'the only ones who know' by the arctic monkeys.
@thepeacecat The most common approach is simply a volume pedal! You can also look for pedals that change the attack time such as the Malekko Attack Decay, EH Microsynth or Pigtronix Philosopher King. Thanks,
@thepeacecat The most famous example of what you're lookin' for would be "Cathedral" by Van Halen. On that song, Eddie simply used the volume knob and I think a short delay/reverb, and that's pretty much it.
Yes, there is an old boss pedal called the "slow gear", unfortunately not made any more.
However, the Behringer company made a clone of this great pedal and it is called the "Slow motion" pedal. You can youtube them if you want to see them in action. Price $27.
I incorporate the Memory Boy A LOT in my music, as well as a number of other EHX pedals. If you want to hear how this pedal interacts with others, check out my channel.
The last time I tried one of these, I couldn't get any oscillation with the feedback knob. When it sounded like it was about ready to oscillate, the volume dropped. Is there some kind of anti-oscillation circuit involved?
Those cheap chips from China don't stand -up well to the original Japanese bucket brigades from Panasonic. There's definitely a LOT more distortion of the signal right after the very first repeat. There's analog and then crappy analog. No wonder this pedal is much less expensive than the Memory Man.
Anyway, thanks for the demo. Made up my mind to save for a DMM.
If it's not too much trouble, could you guys consider doing a Memory Boy Deluxe review? I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated especially in comparison to the Memory Man Deluxe.
hey Andy great review! I have a little problem with this pedal! when I set the feedback knob over 3 o'clock the pedal always starts to self oscillate and it become too loud! What i should do to keep the feedback high without making the pedal self oscillate? Thank you
Can the expression pedal in the deluxe version still affect delay time the same way you guys had it at 3:25? I love this pedal but I tend to rely on tap tempo alot so I'm leaning more toward either the deluxe memory boy or a line 6 DL4.
hey can you answer me something? why when he has the feedback cranked does it not go infinitely, and get louder as it does? when he plays the other note the infinite feedbackd one stops playing and is replaced with the other. how
When I use the chorus setting on this pedal, it modulates my signal to the point where I'm not in tune with my band. Is there a secret for making that not happen?
@philotze Absolutely, if you stay on the triangle waveform and keep the depth subtle. There is a good comparison vid floating around YT of the Boy and the MM, they sound VERY close. Thanks,
As far as I know, digital delay creates a repeat that sounds more identical to the original note. It's more like playing the same note more than once. An analog delay will have repeats that fade away and sound more like a natural echo, like if you were shouting into a large canyon or something. Usually analog delay sounds warmer and more natural, but that isn't to say that it's necessarily better than digital. It just depends on what your ear likes and what you need.
I've heard that there's a significant volume boost when the pedal is engaged. Is this true? If not, could you suggest a reason for this boost in volume?
@louisalive not that i've noticed. theres a slight increase on my distrotion tho. but im only slightly driving a small 15 watt valve amp so its very sensitive.
@bluepingu345 You're better off getting a delay pedal that has digital mod-delay included. This is analog, Edge only used that in the early days, his signature sound is mostly digital modulated delay, check out the Boss DD-7, or the Boss DD-20, which has an LED readout so you can get precise delay times (which is needed to play Edge stuff).
@RattleAndHum1988 he does use a lot of chorusy digital delays, but if you listen to like Beautiful Day or With or Without You you can hear a lot of analog delay sound.
@mistakendrummer Not sure about Beautiful Day, but The Edge is using digital delay with modulation in With or Without You. The delays in that song are crystal clear. I think it's the TC 2290 rack unit he uses in that song.
Andy, you make me feel so dumb. I was looking for an analog delay pedal, a chorus pedal, and a vibrato all separately. Then I remembered this video. GAAAH.
You guys should make a comparison (like the old video ones) between the Memory Boy, The Memory Man and the Memory Toy. This kinda question overwhelm the guitar forums.
bought this today . . i kinda felt guilty.. ihave a carbon copy a dd2 and an ad-202 and a dfx 9, but to be honest i like this pedal and it does things that those don't and has a different sound.. i don't regret it one bit either ..i's on sale right now for just under 100 dollars at guitar center ..
Do most analog delays have blend knobs? Does use of the blend affect the guitar signal very much? If anyone has experience with this, please let me know.
anything that uses binary (1011100101) to map the sound waves is digital, im not sure how this thing works but i dont think they would say its analog if its not
because its true bypass... its weird though you can turn it off and it will stop but when u turn it back on it the repeats continue from before you turned it off
High Speed! I've been looking for that sound for ages! I love you man! You always play the best songs in your demo's, even if I dislike the songs, I always get the idea what a pedal sounds like

what the hell are you talking about? thats not even what true bypass is. true bypass is when the pedal doesn't suck up guitar tone when it is off. turning off the pedal and hearing the delay is part of the pedal because you don't want the delay to just turn off right away. learn your facts.
@TheAngryLemons actually you're the one who doesn't know the facts. true bypass is when the ins and outs are hardwired when a pedal is off, and the pedal is taken completely out of the circuit. non-true bypass pedals don't necessarily suck tone, actually my favorite bypass is on a non-true bypass pedal. anyway, if the delays are still going when the pedal is disengaged, the pedal is still in the circuit - it's not true bypass. this isn't necessarily a bad thing, like i said...

@SpeakToMe73 Damn, $70! It goes for $99. I'd like to get that too. Either that or the Behringer Vintage analog delay cus my reverb has a modulation mode so Im not sure if I should pay extra for something I already have.
@SpeakToMe73 Its not at all the same as the carbon copy. The controls are pretty standard delay controls and you can find a ton of delays with the same controls. It's not even really fair to compare the controls anyhow because the carbon copy has different internal trim pots. The carbon copy has 600ms of delay time, the memory toy has 550ms. Different components, different makers, DIFFERENT sound.
Andy does know a lot of songs! But I bet that for each demo He and the crew get a few songs that highlight the pedals ability, and then he just learns them for the demo.
