  • I don't appreciate any other version of this song at all, I agree with XD,When I saw this dedication concert and I heard this song, I played the hell out of it and learned to play it and told anyone who would listen about it.

  • springsteen does anything justice, both are great singers in theyre own way. but this was a good rough version of the song i think

  • While I'm certainly biased being a JT fanatic. However being a fanatic I've heard every subtle reason why Jame's arrangement and performance do this song justice. Jame's voice is sheer perfection and Bruce's raggy vocal performance didn't work here. It bordered on painful. I believe covers should be an interpretation, but this was a mess. This story isn't supposed to be told in a frenzy. I still like the Boss and think it's cool he's covering James Taylor

  • joemunzer: I agree this is PAINFUL at best and I like Springsteen. This is not he style of song and it shows.

  • MERCI POUR LA TRAD; magnifique chanson et parole

  • I am amazed at how many people like this... I remember watching this on PBS and CRINGING!!!! To each his own I guess....I'll stick with JT's version...That's just me so keep the nasty comments to yourself please :) :)

  • holly fucking shit that was amazing.Wow.

  • Previous comment dedicated to the memory of Studs Terkel... G_d rest his soul.

  • Havng spent 3 summers working in NC mills; 2 textile; 1 Vicks I can tell you Bruce sings the hard reality. Generations of families stuck in plants with no hope of escape; stoned looks by the afternoon. Vicks bottles clink against bottles in an uproar, where a job was created for a woman on a stool to tap the corner of a paperboard box rather fix the machine. I sat at lunch one day, noticed I was shaking, finished eating, walked out the door & worked construction that summer. Real neck shivers!

  • Just Bruce, his guitar and harp. Then he nails the song perfectly. If anyone needs proof Bruce is one the greatest ever, this is it.

  • owns it

  • I'm a huge fan of the James Taylor "Millworker". It's simple and beautiful, and he sings it in a more straightforward, Broadway style. But I nearly fell off the couch when I originally saw this on PBS. Springsteen infuses it with such raw emotion - he takes it to incredible heights. I can't watch it without getting chills. Thank you to Mikaspirit for posting it. p.s. a note re: the translation: "blew in off the water" - ca ne veut pas dire "perdu". Blew in = came in.

  • fucking amazing

  • Makes me wanna c The Boss live

  • The song was actually written by Taylor for a Broadway Musical that ran for only 3 weeks. Taylor is a great songwriter but Springsteen gives the song life, energy, and charges it with raw emotion.

  • This song is about a girl/mother that's trapped in her own life.

If you like Springsteen or not. This was done

brilliant! The emotion in his voice moves along with the lyrics. You hear the release when she dreams in his harmonica and the struggle in his guitar. It's a very high level of performance. Now don't be fooled! This is done by probably the best performer we have on this planet in singersongwriter or rock music. Haunting version!

  • No offense to James Taylor, but doesn't this version absolutely put his to shame?

    It's truly inspired. A masterwork.

  • Sorry, but I just disagree.

Taylor and Vedder just try to make it too pretty. It comes off as trite and absolutely unmoving.

Springsteen makes it boil with energy.

  • This is one of the most moving performances I have ever seen or heard. I Thank You Bruce.

    From,

    Bruce too

  • thanks for this. he owns this song. millworking ain't nothing but a boring f-----g job.

  • That is how you make a song your own,what a talent , and a great performer.....WOW

  • the man is brilliant!

  • Merci!
