my granddad was one of the wrestlers in this before he came to New Zealand for "on the Mat" both aired on TV in the 70's and 80's but I cannot find footage any where
This was in fact the 2nd version for ITV wrestling, when World of Sport ended in 1985 and wrestling went on its own it had real tacky opening titles, this is much better. Big Daddy, most popular UK wrestler of all time.
@richtea1971 He was an embarrassment to British Wrestling. Yes, I know he's dead but I'm being honest. He had absolutely ZERO ring craft and would have others do the vast majority of the work for him and then he would give the belly flop and that was the match ended. WOS showcased some of the best wrestlers in history like the Dynamite Kid, Marc Rocco, Johnny Saint, Tiger Mask (Sammy lee), Bret and Owen Hart, Keiichi Yamada (Jushin Liger) etc etc.....
@Taylorslade123: Well There are videos of him actually wrestling. Look up Big Daddy vs John Elijah for example. He could wrestle but he didn't need to. I do think he was rather good at working the crowd as they did tend to react the way he wanted them to. He was basically the British Hulk Hogan.
@richtea1971 ....You don't have to be a great technical wrestler to be the top man and top draw in the territory or promotion, take Hulk Hogan for instance, not a great technician, but he was a master at working the crowd and controlling their emotions, which is the main reasons he was so sucessful, Big Daddy had no such qualities. The best in british history from an all-round view including popularity was and always will be Davey Boy Smith. End of.
@Taylorslade123 you obviously dont know anything abouyt British wrestling. Big Daddy was British and European Heavyweight Champion on 2 spearate occasions in the 1960s. He also knocked out John Quinn (former 3 time world heavyweight champion) and Big Jim Harris (Kamala in the WWF who beat Hulk Hogan). As for Davey Boy Smith being the best in history, you are an idiot, have you not heard of Bert Assirati, the best English Heavyweight of all time. Davey won a promotional belt which means nowt
No, once World of SPort finished, the franchise for wrestling on ITV changed: meaning that the Joint Promotions guys had to share the contract with the smaller All Star Promotion (to whom all the best names had gone, as they were fed up with Big Daddy & family dominating the TV schedules!). Also, ITV wanted some US wrestling on as well - hence the occasional appearance the 'Hulkster'!
i remember seeing big daddy kill a man in the ring. it was real fighting in those days.
